Awakened Gods #1

Frost and Fury

Rate this book
Twelve gods. Twelve champions. Twelve challenges. Let the games begin! Every two years, the gods hold the Olympus Games. A brutal competition that most champions don’t walk away from. Haunted by her mother’s death in the games, Wren Torres never wanted to be part of the bloodshed. Her very survival depends on her ability to fly under the radar. To hide her true nature as a Fury. When fate thrusts her into the spectacle of the games, Wren discovers unlikely allies in her fellow champions. But in this world of cutthroat competition, no one can be trusted. Not even the Atlas, who pokes holes in all her defenses. Twelve challengers represent the twelve gods of Olympus. Wren might have grit and determination, but this is a world where power and money rule all. By playing the gods’ twisted game, Wren risks losing everything. If she wants to stay alive, she has to keep her Fury in check. That might be the hardest trial of all. ***Frost and Fury is the first book in the Olympus Games duet. This is a slow burn, romantic urban fantasy with Greek gods, and a fierce and flawed main character.***

This book is perfect for fans of The Hunger Games and Greek Mythology! It’s such a quick and easy read! The action is amazing, and I love both of the main characters!

Wren is a BADDIE y’all! We stan and we love her! I love books where our FMC is strong and a fighter. She’s also a sweetheart, and fights against injustice. You’ll definitely find yourself cheering for her, and wanting her to succeed. From the very beginning of the book I could just tell that she was going to be a fierce fighter. Her backstory is great, and I can’t wait to continue reading about her progress as the series goes on. She’s also so smart! I kept rereading the notes with the clues for the challenges, and nothing would come to mind. But our girl Wren was on her A game!

Now on to Atlas! I had to add him to my list of book boyfriends because he was also so easy to fall in love with. I love a mysterious and protective MMC, and that’s exactly what he is. I love that he just can’t help himself where Wren is involved. Even though they’re competing against each other, he cares about her and constantly tells her to be careful. He’s honestly so amazingly, and I love him. The bonus scene in his POV was everything too!

There is some spice in the book, but it’s really only one chapter. The tension between both main characters is great though! And we get to see the smut from both of their POV’s thanks to the bonus scene the author provided. Even though it was only one chapter, it was fantastic!

The book does end in a semi cliffhanger! How am I supposed to wait for the rest of the books in this series!? I need to know what happens next.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC for this book from the author herself. I can’t wait for the next book! I already know the wait is going to be unbearable!

Let me start this review by saying that I love everything that Lizzy writes, but this book…this book may be my favorite book she’s written yet! These characters, this storyline, the mix of the Greek mythology with the hunger games type of trope, all of it just mixed together to create something that was amazing! I could not put this book down simply because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. Wren might be my favorite female lead character that Lizzy has written. She’s a bada** hiding her true identity. She’s feisty, tough and capable without acting like a you know what. She’s rounded up off the street and forced to “volunteer” in the beginnings of the Olympus Games. If she doesn’t become a champion fighting for the gods, she’s going to die. She makes it into the games, and then the adventure really begins. The other champions either have their own agendas or are just trying to survive. As each challenge is given, battle lines are drawn, enemies are made and tentative alliances are formed. But things are not always as they seem. Are all the gods really as evil as Wren previously thought? Or are there some that are fed up with the current system? Also, why is she so irresistibly drawn to Atlas? The man is the literal definition of stoic, never showing any emotion unless it’s a fake facade. And how is she expected to survive and win the challenges, and still hide her true nature from the vengeful gods? Most of these questions get answered in this book, but that ending leaves us with so many more! You need to read this book if your a fan of fantasy, dystopian, Greek mythology retelling stories!

Lizzy Prince masterfully crafts a narrative rich in magic, adventure, and emotional depth in her captivating novel "Frost and Fury: Olympus Games." Set against a backdrop imbued with mythological references and fantastical elements, the story unfolds in a world where the divine and the mortal intricately intertwine. The characters are meticulously developed, each thoughtfully crafted to embody a blend of human flaws and divine qualities, making them both relatable and compelling. This depth of characterization ensures that readers become deeply invested in their journeys, rooting for their successes and empathizing with their struggles.

At the heart of the story is Wren Torres, the strong and determined protagonist, whose resilience and fierce loyalty are both inspiring and relatable. Wren's character transcends the typical hero archetype; she grapples with her own insecurities and doubts, making her journey all the more poignant. Her growth throughout the narrative is both believable and engaging, as she learns to navigate the treacherous waters of her world, filled with powerful gods and complex political landscapes. The side characters are equally well-developed, each contributing unique perspectives on the gods and the intricate politics that govern their society. These characters add rich layers to the story, providing different viewpoints that enhance the overall narrative and deepen the reader's understanding of the world Prince has created.

Prince’s vivid imagery is another standout feature of "Frost and Fury: Olympus Games," as it transports readers into a world where vibrant landscapes, such as lush forests and majestic mansions, contrast sharply with darker elements like looming tensions and treacherous trails. This stark contrast serves to mirror the characters' internal conflicts as they grapple with their own desires, fears, and moral dilemmas. The story's pacing is expertly balanced, allowing for thrilling action sequences that keep readers on the edge of their seats while also incorporating moments of reflection that invite deeper contemplation. This rhythm enhances engagement and emotional depth, ensuring that readers are not only entertained but also moved by the characters' journeys.

The slow-burn romance that develops between the main characters is another highlight of the narrative. It builds on a foundation of trust and loyalty, gradually evolving in a way that feels organic and authentic. This relationship adds another dimension to the story, enriching the emotional stakes and providing readers with a satisfying exploration of love amidst chaos. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and their interactions are infused with a sense of longing and tension that keeps readers eagerly turning the pages.

While the extensive world-building may initially seem overwhelming to some, it ultimately serves to enrich the reading experience. Prince crafts a detailed and immersive setting that rewards those who take the time to delve into its depths. The intricacies of the world, from its history to its cultural nuances, are revealed gradually, allowing readers to uncover the layers of complexity that define this universe. Themes of power, betrayal, and loyalty resonate throughout the narrative, creating a tapestry of conflict and emotion that culminates in a breathtaking climax. This climax not only delivers thrilling moments of action but also ties together the various threads of the story in a satisfying and impactful way, leaving readers eager for the next installment.

In summary, "Frost and Fury: Olympus Games" offers a captivating blend of myth and magic, showcasing Lizzy Prince's remarkable talent in the fantasy genre. Her ability to create a richly detailed world populated by complex characters ensures an unforgettable journey that will linger in the minds of readers long after they turn the final page. With its compelling narrative and emotional resonance, this novel stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring allure of fantasy.

Frost and Fury – Olympus Games Duet #1 – Review

Author: Lizzy Prince

Couple: Wren Torres & Atlas Morrison

Tropes: enemy to lovers, fantasy romance, PNR, Greek mythology themes, fiery FMC, morally grey MCs, dystopian themes, hidden plots, hidden powers/past, demigods & Furies

Review: A gripping story that fans of the Hunger Games, JLA and Percy Jackson will love! Lizzy creates an intense world where the Greek Gods rule the continents and demand tribute every ** years in the form of the Olympus Games. In this single POV fantasy romance we meet Wren who is a Fury in hiding.

The complexity of Wren’s character sets the pace of this book and I loved how she was unashamedly herself the whole time. The way she becomes a participant in the Games and then a Champion of Ares show all the ways the Pantheon abuses tier power and Lizzy does a terrific job with creating Wren’s inner voice and animosity. I enjoyed how Wren’s Fury seemed like a being in itself at times. The worry she had about being discovered and the fact that her mother was killed in the last Olympus Games drew me into her character since I wanted to see how she would handle being center stage in the games.

As the story unfolds, the other 12 Greek Gods are introduced along with Hades. I appreciated how Lizzy unraveled some of Wren’s preconceived notions about the Gods as the Games went on and found myself hoping we would see more of Hades, Persephone and Ares. I enjoyed how Ares was more benevolent in this book and not just a bloodthirsty war god. I also LOVED how Zeus, Hera and Aphrodite were the perceived villains in this book and was shocked about the true heritage of Atlas. I found myself wondering at times if Hades and Ares knew that Wren was a Fury and hoping I would get more hints if they did.

This first book centers mainly around the trials of the games and not the romance brewing between Wren and Atlas. This is a slow burn duet where both MCs have secrets and are subconsciously drawn to one another. The push and pull between them is written phenomenally across the pages and the witty banter sucks you into their story. The pair of them are more like star crossed lovers in this first book due to Wren’s secret power and the identity of Atlas’ father. While it is mild in spice, we get a ton of angst and chemistry that boils over towards the end.

The ending of this book shook me. I did not see Atlas’ betrayal coming and hope to see Wren fight against him in book 2. I also was happy that she finally came out of hiding and showed her Fury side. The final scenes of this book left me with a ton of questions and I am anxious for book 2 so I can see how well my predictions are to the truth!

Rating: 10/10, Lizzy delivers an intense first half of a new Greek Mythology duet!

Overall: I was super excited to receive this book! For one, I’m an absolute nut for mythology— and I definitely had my childhood obsession with Greek myth (and still do). I’ve written a lot inspired by Ancient Rome (and related mythology) as well. So yeah, count me as the target audience!

Upon reading it, I can’t say it’s a perfect book. Then again, nothing ever is— and I enjoyed it!

It’s fairly clear to me that parts of Frost and Fury were heavily inspired by The Hunger Games, as there were quite a few plot points and details that seem too similar for coincidence. This was particularly heavy in the beginning chapters, and admittedly threw me off a little.

Luckily, it got a lot better! The challenges in the game have wonderful takes on Greek mythology that I found entertaining, several lines had me laughing aloud, and I absolutely adore the portrayal of the gods.

It's worth noting that there are definitely a few plot cliches/possibly overused tropes, but... I think that's to be expected from YA and 'romantasy' books. It didn't ruin the novel for me. It wasn't perfect, but it was still a very fun read, and I'll be looking out for the next book!

I would give this book 3.75/5 stars, but I'll round up for the sake of neat stars.

I was honored to review the ARC copy of this book, kindly provided by the author! This review is my fair and honest opinion.

{M/F, single POV, PNR}

This is the second excellent novel I have read with Greek Gods and trials. I almost didn’t want to read it at first because the mention of a Fury as the lead conjured up a hag with wings in my mind (LOL). But Wren (wings, get it?) has grown up in a distressed, dystopian community where the clerics and priests rule, with the gods’ approval. The gods want to be worshipped and remembered, but they don’t actually want to govern.

Wren is actually a superhero, fighting at night to save the people from their repressive regime, but this is doomed to end...
Corralled like cattle into the biennial games, this time led by Zeus and Hera, she has to choose between death and becoming a representative for the enemy. Lovely.

The Trials are actually interesting and modern versions. I think my favorite involves 9 sisters, tons of unfulfilling food, and restless sleep in an idealic bungalow. Expect lots of action, too.

And for the romantic in me:

“You’re going to come for me. Only me. Because only my cock can give you what you need.” Atlas and Wren have a hot/cold dynamic. All the elements I love are here:
⁃ Atlas gets into her personal space, touching or protecting her. Even if she doesn’t need it.
⁃ They have a really hawt scene after Aphrodite waves her hand, and Wren doesn’t regret anything even when Atlas goes cold again.
⁃ Both have secrets
⁃ Two kisses and hand on a back. I just love the little details of attraction.

“I’m not sure if he’s asking me what set off the lust bomb between us or if he’s asking why we kept going after it wore off. We were both right there, agreeing to this in the moment.”

This book felt longer than it is. It is very similar to The Hunger Games just with a godly twist to it. I will say that we see a different portrayal of the gods in this book that I have seen on any movies or books.

The competition/challenge was a little interesting but think there was to much down time used on nothing, in stead of like training or preparing for the next challenge as they get told.

Wren seems to know nothing and she has told us that the education she has gotten was that good so it really irritates me that the challenge come so easy to her and that she is so much better at them than all the other contents.

An the "romanceship" the author is trying and then not really trying with between Atlas and Wren, gives me whiplash. First Wren hates him, then Atlas does something kindly then she begins to like him better and then its like she remember that she should hate him and she goes back to hating him.

Wren is also very very negative in nearly every thought she has and the only really reason we get is because she is the fury and she should hate the gods and what they does. The author glase over that Wren has lost her hole family because of them, yes it gets mention a few times but not really like that they are the reason she hates/are so negative all the time.

I will say you do like the concept of the plot, the execution is just not there. I will probably read the next book in the series just because of the clifhanger at the ending.

“It’s funny , power sucks when you don’t want it. But there’s a responsibility there too.”

12 Champions, 12 trials, 1 winner. Completely action-packed, with swoon worthy characters that you grow to love, but ones you also completely despise.

Think Percy Jackson meets the Hunger Games, and you get this glorious book! I've always been obsessed with anything/everything greek gods, but this puts an entire new twist on it!

Wren is a complete bada$$ FMC. When she gets forced to compete as a champion for one of the 12 gods, we watch her struggle to contain her secret that she's fought to keep hidden her whole life. A secret that could be her undoing at the hands of the gods.

Atlas and Wren have great banter and loads of smexal tension, but when they had moments together, you couldn't help but be completely consumed by it.

This was my first book by Lizzy (she was kind enough to send my an ARC copy), and I can definitely say it definitely won't be my last. I really enjoyed her writing style, and you can tell her main focus is giving us a story with a great plot (and just enough spice ) . 😝

Wren is just trying to survive in Chicago, hiding her true identity as a Fury. Ever since the gods returned, they rounded up and killed all the rest of her kind. But one night she's rounded up and forced to compete for a spot in the Olympus games. If she doesn't become one of the champions, she'll be killed. Somehow she gains a spot even against demigods that have been training for the games their whole lives. One such champion is Atlas whom she's drawn to despite his aloof and emotionless attitude. But every time she runs into trouble, he's there to help her. But it's he her greatest hero or her eventual downfall? After that cliffhanger we won't know until the next book and I can't wait.
This book was a combination of Greek mythology and Hunger Games. I love the strong female main character, Wren. She's shocked everyone so far with her fighting ability and smarts. And now I'm left wondering about Atlas' motivations at the end of the book. I was pleasantly surprised by this book by a new to me author.

Frost and Fury

Every two years the gods hols the Olympus Games where twelve competitors will fight, most not surviving. Wren lost her mother in the Games and wants absolutely nothing to do with them. Unfortunately for her, she couldn't get away from them and fate has thrown her head first into the Games. She hopes to at least hide her Fury nature, and will find surprises along the way.

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I loved this book. I love Greek mythology, and loved the way the author twisted some of the myths to give you a different perspective on some of the Greek gods. Wren's character was also so complex and had so many intricate details that really made her a fantastic character. She never changed who she was or what she wanted and I loved that about her. She was forced into the Games, but she played them very well and shows the gods true nature in it. I'm excited to see where they next book will take us!

You need to read this book if you are a fantasy, dystopian, Greek mythology, and romance fan!

Who doesn’t love a good retelling of the Greek gods?

This is the first book by Lizzy Prince and now I am completely hooked and getting ready to read all her books. I’ve read many Greek god retellings, and this is by far one of the best. I was hooked from the first chapter. This book was not predictable at all, which is the best kind of book to read.

If you love a slow-burn angsty romance this is the book for you. I want to know why Wren and Atlas feel this burning need for each other and I want them to stop fighting it and let it all go. The one steamy scene in the book was to die for and I hope there is more of them in the future.

I love how she writes some of the gods act normal one moment and then bam they show their all-powerful asses, which makes you keep wondering whose side are they on. Seriously who doesn’t love Hades and Ares though?

Wren is so relatable as a person, and I love her inner dialogue. Some of the things she thinks about doing or saying made me laugh out loud a few times. Her tenacious ability to stand up for herself and others is aspiring, and I love how she struggles to hide her true self from everyone even at the risk of her life. She is slowly opening herself up to befriend some of her fellow competitors, which shows the growth of her character development.

The book ended on a cliffhanger, and I desperately want to know when the next book is coming out so I can find out what happens next.

I loved this!

I was lucky enough to be trusted to Beta read this amazing book. I absolutely love Wren and her sassy inner dialogue had me giggling to myself. She is tough and does not back down from a challenge, although she does struggle to contain her rage sometimes!

I really enjoyed how the Greek Gods were portrayed and they seem almost human at times but then something will happen and you’ll remember just how dangerous they are.

The story kept me hooked and I just had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. I cannot wait for the next book to see what happens.

If you’re a fan of the hunger games, Greek gods and bad a$$ women, this is for you. Buckle up, you’re in for a ride!

I read this book a little skeptically as I didn’t really think it would be my thing I’m not usually into gods etc. Oh my I’m a complete convert this story was amazing it was compelling you were completely along for the ride feeling all the emotions and living each and every situation it was so well written. I’m desperate to know what happens next in the games. I loved everything about it from the way it depicts the normal people and then the gods/demigods etc and how all the relationships interact. Plus the side plots and twists and turns in the champions relationships and I just loved it when they get a taste of their own medicine like being knocked out with one punch. Highly recommend. Can’t wait for more!

May the Olympic Gods Be Ever In Your Favor

Half-Blood Camp/Hunger Games all grown up! Still it's a medium burn. How dare they replace Hades as one of the 12 Olympic Gods! I just don't think he wants to play Zeus' game and likes being on the outside...the Renegade, the Bad Boy. I love the Wren/Atlas relationship. I wish there was more from Atlas' point of view. I read the bonus content and thought it would have helped flesh out the Atlas character. He's strong. He's silent....too silent. Still don't know exactly what happened to Lark and Saffron champions. Who is the woman at the end? Is she one of the champion's mother? Can't wait for the next book. There was a note that this would only be 2 books but I really think, and hope, this could be a whole series.

Such an underrated book that deserves so much more hype. Main character gives off Celaena Sardothien vibes. There is even a scene where in the first battle she knocks off her opponent with a single hit that is almost identical to the one in Throne of glass and tbh this is the only book that I accept coping from because I want to relive it in 100 different settings.
Banter is bantering, she’s ACTUALLY funny and I laughed multiple times throughout the book and MMC is hot as hell (especially if you have a soft spot for blonde guys as I do). Some parts of inner monologue felt a bit repetitive but I can give that a pass for enough of logic from FMC. What more that you need in a Greek gods Hunger games romance?

Initially, I was tempted to give this book a lower rating due to its extreme similarity to The Hunger Games. However, I was sucked in by the excellent writing style and fabulous world building, using Greek mythology as a backdrop. I like Lizzy Prince as an author, and I have to say that this is one of her most well-written and engrossing books yet. The FMC is an intriguing and very likable character. The other characters in the book are enigmatic; both they and the plot are entirely unpredictable. I couldn't stop reading well into the wee hours of the morning, even though I had to get up really early!

Frost and Fury is a wildly imaginative first book of a duet and an entertaining foray amongst the Olympian Gods who have awakened from a sleep curse imposed by the Furies.
The mortal world has changed in this adventure that takes place in an urban setting and is chock full of Greek Mythology and a feisty heroine who finds herself thrust by fate into the Olympic Games held in honor of the Gods.
With lots of action, intrigue, power plays, slow burn romance and secrets weaving their magic through the well written narrative this was a story I enjoyed and look forward to continuing.
Cliffhanger ending.

Percy Jackson meets the Hunger Games. And the characters aren't teenagers. Okay, I can get behind that. Wren is a tough FMC that has a lot to hide and a lot to lose when she is forced into the Olympus Games. The background and setting for the world the author has created is intriguing and yet similar enough that it doesn't feel completely alien. I'm a fan of mythology and the ties to the gods in this book left me eager to see where the story would take Wren with every turn of the page. Some bits were certainly predictable, and I doubt I was the only reader frustrated by the ending. Cliffhanger of sorts. Amazing read. Definitely recommend for fans of aforementioned series.

This book..WOW! Great characters, amazing storyline, the suspense and all the action! It’s like the Hunger Games written as if it was a Dan Brown novel, plus throw in the God-complexities of Greek Mythology. A definite page turner that kept me from my regular meal schedule because I JUST NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT’S GONNA HAPPEN NEXT! The only downside of this book….it was a massive cliffhanger, so upsetting that I actually considered giving it a 3 stars! Now I am at the edge of my seat waiting for the next book!.

Gods, Champions and Challenges.

The savage 'Olympus Games' are every 2 years and most rivals fight to the death in each match. Wren Torres did not plan to compete and wanted no part of the carnage. Her survival depended on her gifts to not be noticed. But fate was not on her side, though luck may be.
As a student I came to love the idea of and stories of the Gods of Greek Mythology. I read everything I could get my hands on about them even years later. I really enjoyed reading this book Frost and Fury and cannot wait for more books from Author Lizzy Prince.

good

This book was not exactly what I thought it was going to be, but I did like it. Wren is a fury and she’s really trying hard to keep her identity secret. The gods have been awaken and they would kill her if they found out that she was a fury since the furies are the ones that put them to sleep. Unfortunately, for Wren, she got kidnapped and swept up with a whole bunch of other people in her neighborhood for the games that the gods like to play that of course our deadly. There are interesting characters in this book, and Ren is not sure who she should even trust. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

This was a ripping good read.

The first 50 pages were maybe a little info dumpy and at first I thought it was a Hunger Games mash up. But once the story gets going, it is a unique take on a games trope. Wren and Atlas are great characters with intense chemistry and the spice is fantastic (not NEARLY enough!) The games aspect kept me turning the pages, and the worldbuilding is terrific. It is well-written and fast paced. Highly recommend if you like the games aspect of Catching Fire mixed with the Olypmic gods.

Will definitely be reading book 2!

This book is like if Hunger Games was created by the Greek Gods.

This is not my typical genre, but it had me hooked from the beginning and had me on the edge of my seat. There were some elements that could've been improved upon, but overall, it had a strong and likeable main character, solid slow-burn romance, and some really interesting plot development. I hope that the second book is even better.

I'd rate this book 4.25⭐️ if I could. Would definitely recommend to anyone who's into dystopian-type novels.

I really liked this book because of the influences of Greek mythology. This book in terms of influences from the huger games and then the Greek mythology merged together, I personally thought this version was better 🤣😛 hahaha. Spice is just 🌶. Maybe that will become even more in book 2, no idea. I secretly hope so. Hihihi The story is in any case well put together and would definitely recommend it.

Urgh.....wasn't sure what to give this but had to be a 5 star....First few pages didn't suck me in, but then I was drawn in.

A mix of the Hunger Games,Greek gods, and modernish timeline, this book made me want to read it in one sitting. Characters you love to hate and so many you want to cheer on...jumping on the second book straight away and there's not many series that have made me do this.....can't wait to see how this ends..

At the beginning it was a bit too copy-pasty of the Hunger Games scenario, but then again I enjoy the adventure / fighting parts. It was a moderate read, I just wish the main character did not sweat in every chapter, I cannot stop imagining her sweaty like a doner-kebab chef in the summer due to that...
