Now that book#2 has dropped I’m doing a re-read!!

I loved this, a suspenseful goody, I’d had my eye on this for a while, once free of arcs this was on the top of my list. I was pulled in straight away.

It took one man to help her, new identity, new city, new apartment, new job, placing her under the ever watchful eyes of three dangerous highly good looking men, who had their fingers in many pies.

I loved these three men. The silent one, the man whore, the one in charge. Each one was brought under her spell.

Catapulting over that cliffy has me desperately craving, needing, wanting to read the next book!

I couldn’t do it.

I just couldn’t. I wanted so much to like this book, I really did. I think the premise is great, and I can’t even say it was poorly executed, cause I got 63% done before I stopped reading.

So, these guys literally kidnap her, taking the one thing she has wanted for the last two years: her freedom. But then, after over a week (I think) she gets some half-a**ed explanation that “they are trying to protect her”, which she just believes! Even though they have literally lied to her, and in Hunter’s case, a lot of lies. Like… why would she believe them? Why would she even care if they were protecting her when they won’t even let her go anywhere, even with a bodyguard?? The first time she does get to leave, it’s to go get her stuff from her apartment, just reinforcing the fact that she has no control whatsoever!!

Now, since she believes wholeheartedly that she is being a brat (her own words) because she was **KIDNAPPED**, but it was for her “protection”, it’s as though nothing happened to begin with. She immediately starts being friendly with the guys. Literally had no problem hanging out alone with Meyer all evening, the same evening she was told it was for her protection that she was being held against her will, laughing and flirting.

Quinn is shown to be this feisty chick with hella trauma, all caused by the men previously in her life, so why would she do a complete turnaround just because one of her male kidnappers gave her a horrible explained reason for her new predicament???? If she had, I don’t know, made them apologize, or ignored them until she had time to actually decide if they were telling the truth, or even just have a scene where she goes off on them saying “if you continue like this I’ll leave you guys”. But no. The guys show 0 remorse for their actions, they don’t even grow to understand that what they did could even be seen as slightly wrong, and Quinn just rolls over like a good puppy, no fight involved.

The entire time I read through those scenes, I couldn’t decide if this was some form of intentional glorified Stockholm’s syndrome or if the author just threw a forced proximity relationship together without thinking it through.

I would have even believed the scenario a little more had the author never portrayed Quinn as feisty or stubborn. If she was a meek and timid person, her just believing them would make more sense.

I couldn’t make it make sense.

I really wanted to like this book, and I tried to get over the horrible beginning to this relationship, but it doesn’t make sense why she would forgive them for lying to her and taking away her freedom, so why would she even enter into this relationship to begin with?

What is it with authors lying in their blurb? It clearly says this is a standalone book. And it ends on a cliffhanger and is obviously part of a series. This is the second book in a row I have read where I was mislead. I don't know why the authors are doing this buts it's so fricken annoying.

That is the reason why I gave this a 1 star.

This author always manages to deliver the goods for me and this one was no exception. Quinn is on the run from her abusive ex the amount of trauma both physical and mental she's suffered at his psychotic hands is high. Without the assistance of Tommy a guardian angel she met whilst trying to stay one step ahead of her ex Trent, she'd have been in deep shit a long time ago. It's Tommy's connections that bring her to her latest safe haven and under the protection of three dangerous men Meyer Hunter and Rory.

Now working the bar at their club Quinn attempts to let go of some of her fear. But believing it's only a matter of time before Trent resurfaces again she's far from complacent. She's also unaware that her new bosses have her firmly set in their sights as well as under their full protection and are just biding their time before they intend to step in and claim her as their own.

This was an easy read the romance was very insta which didn't bother me here as it just seemed to work. Quinn's psychotic ex is a cop but she now finds herself on the other side of the law as Mayer Hunter and Rory are very much a part of the murky criminal world.

I liked Quinn a whole lot though I do think she should have taken Tommy up on his offer to get rid of Trent and couldn't understand why she held back from this particular path. I also liked all of the men and appreciated the protective all-in dynamic that this had going on. The sex was hot and the story was well-written and interesting. I'm looking forward to diving into the conclusion next especially with where this left off.

🎶
Are we in the clear yet?, are we in the clear yet?, are we in the clear yet?, in the clear yet, good
🎶

For the past two years,Quinn (h) has been hiding, relentlessly pursued by a tormentor with no boundaries. Desperate to escape, she starts over in a new city, reinventing herself with a new name, new hair, and new clothes. Her only hope is to find peace and reclaim the parts of herself she’s lost along the way. However, instead of the quiet existence she longs for, Quinn stumbles into three men that have their sights set on her. But rather than seeking to imprison her in a gilded cage, they offer something she thought she’d never find again: freedom.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

Quinn has been on the run from her abusive ex, never getting a moment’s peace. She’s been hiding out in small towns, but that very fact seems to make it easier for him to track her down. This time, Tommy—her sort-of father figure who has the means to help her relocate—calls in a favor and moves her to a larger city where she might blend in better. To keep a low profile, Quinn ends up working at a bar in a sex club. However, staying under the radar proves impossible when she catches the eye of the club’s owners, who have been watching her closely without her knowledge. It’s frustrating for Quinn because, after yearning for freedom, she finds herself once again surrounded by controlling men who make decisions for her. They take her inadvertent discovery of something she shouldn’t have seen as an excuse to dictate her safety plan, which feels pretty manipulative. But, hey, whatever floats their boat.

[Hunter]

“Can I—?” He points behind me and I realize I am fully in the way of him getting out.

“God, sorry,” I say as I step to the side, my face on fire as embarrassment floods me.

“Don’t be, I can’t think of a better way to start my day than being accosted by a beautiful woman.”

When Quinn first meets Hunter in her apartment building, he pretends not to know her and ends up "seducing" her. Although their encounter is consensual, it’s a huge letdown for Quinn. She’s trying hard to start fresh and rebuild her life, and here’s Hunter, failing to be upfront about his true intentions and his role in protecting her. He comes across as the classic charming flirt—smooth, confident, and fully aware of his appeal. Hunter uses this to his advantage, making it easy for Quinn to let her guard down. What stings the most is that Quinn genuinely liked him and saw this as a chance for something real and normal in her chaotic life. Instead, she finds herself dealing with yet another situation where someone's ulterior motives ruin her hopes for a fresh start. It’s no wonder she’s so upset with Hunter. However, as Quinn gets to know Hunter better, her feelings start to shift. She begins to see a different side of him. It turns out Hunter isn’t just playing a part; he’s genuinely a good guy who’s wrestling with guilt over misleading her. He’s really beating himself up over the deception, especially since Quinn is giving him a harder time than anyone else. This new perspective helps Quinn soften her stance. She realizes that, despite his initial deception, Hunter’s intentions were more about genuine fascination and care than manipulation. He got carried away with his feelings and curiosity, not out of malice. This shift in understanding helps her move past her anger and frustration, recognizing that Hunter’s true intentions were ultimately better than she first thought.

[Rory]

“You would never be a bother, Quinn. Not to me.” I blink at him, unsure what to say to that. “Sit. I won’t be long, and then I’ll show you around.”

Rory is the classic silent, brooding type, and at first glance, he might seem intimidating to everyone around him. But once Quinn moves in with them, Rory’s true nature shines through. Despite his tough exterior, he turns out to be incredibly sweet and caring. Everyone might find him a bit terrifying, but he’s the one who goes out of his way to make Quinn feel safe and at home. He takes the time to show her around and genuinely wants to give her the freedom she needs, unlike her ex. Rory is determined not to be like her abusive past and actively ensures that Quinn has the space she deserves. He’s a bit of a silent defender, always looking out for her and making sure she’s comfortable. Even though Rory is the guy who handles the dirty work and calls in the clean-up crew when needed, beneath that tough facade is a major softie who’s deeply protective of Quinn. His kindness and effort to make her feel secure are a stark contrast to his intimidating reputation, showing that he’s got a heart of gold. Rory’s role is to watch over Quinn and ensure her safety, and he does this with a combination of a teddy bear’s gentleness and a guard dog’s vigilance. He’s responsible for keeping her out of harm’s way and makes sure no one messes with her. Despite his intimidating presence, Rory is essentially a big softie when it comes to Quinn. Quinn treats him like a regular person rather than someone to be feared. Her acceptance and normalcy really mean a lot to him. In a way, she gives him a sense of control and purpose, which he craves, while she also lets go of some of her own control. This mutual exchange helps create a unique bond between them, where Rory’s protective nature and Quinn’s trust in him help both of them find a balance.

[Meyer]

“I am not some toy or possession you can claim ownership of.”

“No, you are far more than that, but what I said is still true. You belong to us now. You will remain here for your own safety, you will be cared for, catered to, and have everything you could possibly want.”

Meyer is the group's leader, the one who calls the shots and makes sure everything runs smoothly. When it comes to Quinn, he’s the driving force behind her moving in with the guys. His primary concern is to keep her ex from having easy access to her, and he’s determined to make that happen. What’s interesting is Meyer’s deep fascination with Quinn. It seems to come out of nowhere, but knowing she needs protection only heightens his interest. His protective nature can come off as a bit overbearing, but he genuinely believes it’s all in her best interest. When Quinn starts to understand where he's coming from, she begins to see that his intentions, though intense, are ultimately meant to keep her safe. Her realization leads her to agree with Meyer’s plans. Despite his overprotectiveness, she recognizes that he’s looking out for her well-being and is committed to ensuring she’s secure. This shift in understanding helps build a mutual respect between them, even if Meyer’s methods are a bit heavy-handed. Despite Meyer’s extra layer of protectiveness, he shows Quinn a level of gentleness and kindness that’s rare from him. He’s a bit of a paradox: while his role as the leader demands vigilance and control, he also has a soft spot for those in his circle. For Quinn, this means he goes above and beyond to take care of her. Meyer loves to cook for Quinn and makes sure she’s well taken care of, focusing on her needs with a dedication that’s truly touching. It’s clear that, for him, taking care of the people in his circle is a top priority. Quinn becomes the focal point of his attention, and his nurturing side comes out in full force.

─── ・ 。゚☆: OVERALL*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

One moment, Quinn is at her apartment, and the next, she’s being told to grab her things and leave, with no chance of returning due to threats from their enemies and her ex. The whirlwind nature of her situation means she doesn’t get much time to grow or learn to navigate life independently without fear. However, on the flip side, I’m really glad she has such a solid support system. They are all around her are willing to do whatever it takes to keep her safe, and that’s a comforting aspect.

DNF @ 50%

Trash is what it is. The FMC is a weakass bitch who's afraid of her own shadow. She says she's tired of running for her life from her abusive ex but she's against getting rid of him when she has the opportunity. I really hate people who keep whining about their problem when they have the means to get it resolved, if they would just stop being self-righteous and a coward. 🙄

Soooo... I really do not get the attraction for the three guys. Hell, they claimed her even though they haven't spent any time with her. Meyer said that the fire that lives in Quinn is everything he's been missing but...fire? WHAT FIRE? She is literally more limp than a freaking noodle. She doesn't know how to stand up for herself! What fire are you talking about???

Another thing I cannot get into is the writing. It's too chaotic that I ended up skimming most parts, and I guess the continuous whining from Quinn just really ruined it for me. Like, I just want to slap her so freaking much.

"The justice system is about as reliable as a chocolate tea pot"

I'm giving this book a 4 star read because I enjoyed how easy it was to jump from one time frame of the story to another so smoothly.

Right around the first half of the book is a recap of the past 8 months and the struggles Quinn faces to evade her abusive ex.. Everything speeds back up to current events around chapter 15 and let me tell you that this is where the book dragged me back into the storyline for a second time.

Bottom line.. if you're into the morally gray bad boys who will burn the world down to save the girl .. then I recommend diving into this book.

I also really love how the MFC was closer to the age 30 than she was 20 because I always like to add on an extra 5-10yrs to any character in a book that feels too "Juvenile" for my liking..

Things get hot in this book about a girl who jumps out of the frying pan and into the pot.

A must read for those who enjoy suspense and dark romance

This one is a dark romance so make sure you check your TWs. The book starts off right away in the midst of her running from a dangerous relationship. So you get information given on why pretty quickly. I definitely would hate to have someone relive something due to lack of information. This one is a MMMF, so a why choose. It’s a Insta-love type of thing as well. While the relationships aren’t set in stone right away, and do take time to build there is definitely insta-love going on from the MMCs (I do want to disclose this because I know this is not everyone’s cup of tea). The book is a bit faster paced for the most part, and definitely is heavy on the mafia type vibes. The MMCs are morally grey as well. I did debate whether to give this book 3 or 4 on the spice meter. I did ultimately decide on 3. It is fairly spicy though, which I loved.

This Dark Romance is book 1 in The Secrets We Keep Duet. This book does have dark scenes, topics, and themes. Please make sure to check all your trigger warnings list before reading. The romance in this book is a why choose, and insta-love. The book is spicy, and the spicy scenes are descriptive. The book moves at a quick pace following Quinn as shes is on the run from an abusive relationship. With the help of a friend she ends up in the hands of 3 men who are supposed to keep an eye on her, and protect her. Only they want to do a lot more than that with her from the moment they lay eyes on her. This is a steamy, and entertaining read.

oh my !

This book drew me in from the first chapter. Quinn is a fighter , a survivor and definitely sassy once she finds her backbone. The tragic beginning of this book had me at the brink of bawling my eyes out. The way this book was written just captures how Quinn felt. The destruction of the things she suffered through and the running to get away. When she finally finds a safe place thanks to a friend . There she’s hooked up with a job and everything . When she meets Meyer Hunter and Rory lord we’re their steamy scenes fire. Then I was lulled thinking Quinn was safe and then pow smacked with a cliff hanger that made me clench my jaw. This book was awesome and I can’t wait to read book 2 to see what happens next.

Well I think Lily broke me with this one!! The Secrets We Keep is part one in a duet about Quinn, who is on the run from her complete a-hole of a husband. A true wolf in sheep’s clothing, this guy is the worst of the worst.

Following along her journey, she finds help in the most unexpected place, which eventually brings her to the West Coast. Under the protection of Meyer, Hunter, and Rory, she starts to find herself and a slice of happiness.

But life is never that easy, is it? This kept me on my toes with every chapter - it was all the feels, all the steam, and ALL of a cliffy!! To be continued and I’m for sure tuning in to see how this shakes out (cue the nail biting!!)

Read the trigger warnings ⚠️

It drew me in, her past life before her ex was brutal, being with her ex, a cop no less was even more brutal. She had a lone stranger who offered help, he was more like a protective parent to her, after her many attempts at hiding he pushed her toward the three guys, Meyer, Rory and Hunter. Each one individual, each one a non blood brother, each one offering her their protection, safety and orgasms. There technic may have been unorthodox but if it kept her safe 🤷🏻‍♀️

Until her world stuttered, as the cliffhanger at the end entices you to the next book.

This follows Quinn, who's been on the run from her abusive ex for 2 years! only he always manages to find her . So, she finally agrees to go by Tommy's rules( he's the guy who helps her make new identities and find new places to stay) . He finds her the perfect place to keep her protected, or so he thought .

These men aren't only looking out for her they want her as theirs ( all 3 of them) . They will do anything to protect her ... including putting a tracker into her spine without her knowing.

Just when shes getting comfortable shit hits the fan.

& yes , this ends on a cliffhanger 😲

The Secrets We Keep is the first book in the The Secrets We Keep duet. This is my first book by Lily Wildhart and man, am I blown away! I wasn't sure what to expect. This is a dark mafia that has soooo many triggers and emotional topics. I literally devoured this in one sitting. Quin has been through and overcomes so much. And OMFG the trio! Hunter, Rory, and Meyer were her saving grace. Totally looking forward to the next book!

I will mark this one as DNF because I cannot for the life of me force myself to read it . It is pretty good but It is the kind of book that I either read in one sitting or it takes me months. I will finish it at some point but I will jump a few chapters because I don't care about the relationship (which is bad for a why choose book) and will just read to plot's conclusion.

I had to stop reading 2/3 of the way through.

⚠️Light spoilers⚠️

I liked the beginning well enough, but when the guys became more involved, they started being really controlling without reason.
Then they would get angry when she kicks off for the way they are treating her. They state that they are a lot better than her ex because they aren't physically abusing her like her ex but seem to forget about her mental health. They also justify holding her hostage by saying they are protecting her when she was doing just fine before with all the precautions they were taking.
They are constantly gas lighting her. At one point, she became angry at being in a gilded cage, and they just stated that she wasn't in a cage as it could be a lot worse and made her feel bad for suggesting it. Forgetting that the definition of a gilded cage is being contained to one space and not allowed to leave even if that space is luxurious.

I was really into this book and then it got so ridiculous!! The main character was abused by her ex and then miraculously wants to stay being “kidnapped” by these men and staying in their rock compound. She goes along with it because they are “protecting her.” It was beyond far fetched. Quinn was so scared and on the run for so long and just wanted her freedom but now she’s just going to be OKAY with staying at Myers with these men???? it was absolutely ridiculous!!!!!!!!!! Then the FMC is apologizing for her actions saying she was being bratty by wanting to leave?? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK!? Also the audible on this was horrible. The female narrator sounded like she was 50-60 years old and the sex scenes repulsed me. I tried so hard to get past the voice. Horrrible book all around. Do not recommend wasting time on a book where the FMC is so strong and brave to ultimately switch to a weak dumb bitch.

The set up, the premise, the FMC and the supporting characters are absolutely amazing. Honestly love a tortured FMC so this was just chefs kiss. But I should have known from the first time we get the MMC pov that this would go bad. This woman is literally actively on the run from her abuser, and you're telling me she is just happily falling asleep after being kidnapped and is fine doing fucking primal play with the guy who kidnapped her and she has known for 5 damn minutes???? I cannot deal with this like what the actual fuck. This book could have been so good if the MMC's were removed and replaced by literally anyone else.

I really don't like leaving such harsh reviews but sometimes books just really hit a sore spot and this is it for me.

DNF at 34%. Not a fan of all the time jumping.

The premise started off so well just went downhill from there. I ff this so much to get through it. Quinn is weak then mouthy weak then strong weak then trained and at the end sees her ex and back to weak.

I will not waste a credit for book 2

DNF

I'm only a quarter of the way through & I'm having to call it quits.

The FMC has endured horrific abuse at the hands of her father & her ex.

She's been on the run for 2 & a half years.

She has a friend, Tommy, who's helping her escape her ex, he provides new identities for her, sends her to new areas when her ex finds her & he then sets her up in an expensive apartment block that belongs to his friends & they also hire her to work at their club, which also turns out to be a sex club.

These 3 men, for reasons unknown (I'm only about 3 hours in), agree to keep her safe. However, one look at the FMC & they're ALL besotted.... because... reasons!

Ultra insta-love/obsession... for all 3 🙄

It's implied that the MMCs are aware of her past abuse & they've agreed to help her. Again, no clue as to why nor why they'd set her up in such an expensive apartment out of the goodness of their heart, as none of the other girls in the club get the same treatment...

Although they're all aware that she's on the run, is traumatised, is rightly paranoid because her ex always finds her (I know he's a cop, but HOW does he find her even with a new identity, new look, is beyond me... she never contacts anyone from her past)... anyway, I digress... they know all this & supposedly their goal is to keep her safe, yet they seem as abusive as her ex 🥴

How do they go about keeping her safe?! Not by introducing themselves to her, not by helping her learn to trust them, not by being upfront about who they are... Nope, they start stalking her, watching her every move, following her around without her knowing it & pretending they don't know her when they meet her... someone please explain to me HOW does that differ from her abusive ex?!?🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I had to DNF, when it got to the elevator scene, where he SPANKS her without any warning, out of the blue, without any prompt, without talking to her about if she's ok or even ready for that & SHE, a recent victim & survivor of horrific domestic violence just shrugs that off as though it's perfectly normal & she neither freaks out about it nor does it conjure up bad memories for her, nothing. She's good to go, because she hasn't had sex in nearly 3 years...

Lord Almighty... she's running for her life because an extremely violent man battered her for years, make it make sense!

Victims of physical abuse usually take YEARS, sometimes even decades to overcome the trauma. Some can't even handle being touched without flinching. Yet, this girl is getting horny by a stranger spanking her when she's STILL in a state of high alert from her abusive ex! It doesn't make ANY sense!

Had the author, like so many others before her, taken the time to introduce the subject of BDSM to a character who still bears the scars of her abuse, I could understand it. Had he walked her through it & introduced her to the possibility of some BDSM play, taking it slow & testing her boundaries. I'd be onboard.

But, spanking someone who faints at the thought that her ex might show up & who is jittery as hell, without her consent & respecting her boundaries is asinine, IMO. Especially when the MMC knows about her past, had he not known, it'd be a different story.

All in all, the author just seems too eager to introduce BDSM & dark romance themes to a story that should have little to none of it, beyond her abusive ex.

Had the DV been in the distant past & the FMC chose to explore BDSM as a way to gain control or even if the MMCs introduced her to it slowly & respectfully, I wouldn't even bat an eye, but I can't say that I like the trajectory of where the book is going 🤷‍♀️

Ugh, where to begin with my issues with this book...

1. Insta-love. The guys are in love with Quinn before ever even truly meeting her or speaking to her. Wild move, especially considering this is not a standalone, so you have time to build out the relationships.

But as the duet continues, I don't think we ever really get any real relationship growth. A lot of the interactions feel surface level, and I'm sort of confused as to how they're so in-love when I can't actually see their relationships deepening on the page.

2. The time jumps & overall pacing. There are so many time jumps throughout this book that it's exhausting. And I'm not just talking about the blatant time jumps that are labeled for us at the start of a chapter, letting us know if what we're about to read is from the past, or if we've moved forward in time.

I'm talking about the little hidden time jumps where you're reading a chapter and the sentence ends on a note about how they're discussing Thanksgiving, then you get a break in the chapter, and then the next sentence is immediately talking about how it's Christmas.

So... We've just missed an entire month in the span of a chapter break and for what?

This happens constantly throughout the duet, and it just genuinely does not work, especially when you consider that years will pass over the course of the duet, and that's all time that we're missing in character growth and relationship development.

3. The trauma treatment. At the start of the first book, our FMC is traumatized from her abusive relationship and being on the run for years, with her abusive ex always managing to find her.

The way that this series doesn't show our FMC's growth and the way she works to overcome her trauma is a sore point for me. Once she's in the guys' house, being held captive, she gives in way too easily for someone who has been through what she's been through. It didn't work.

4. Loose ends. JFC, the amount of loose ends by the end of this duet? What's Mateo's issue with our FMC? Who actually betrayed the guys other than just Harper? What was Tommy's deal with the Knights? Now that the guys have just given over control of the city (also wtf), are they no longer rescuing trafficking victims? And holy hell, what in the fuck is up with that absolutely unhinged backstory of our FMC's childhood with absolutely no real explanation of it at all?

This duet unfortunately follows too many tropes without giving us solid structure with the writing and the plot, so everything falls so flat.
