Born as Harold Rubin in New York City, he later claimed to be a Jewish orphan who had been raised in a Catholic boys home. In reality he was the son of well-educated Russian and Polish immigrants. He was reared by his pharmacist father and stepmother in Brooklyn.
His first book, Never Love a Stranger (1948), caused controversy with its graphic sexuality. Publisher Pat Knopf reportedly bought Never Love a Stranger because "it was the first time he had ever read a book where on one page you'd have tears and on the next page you'd have a hard-on".
His 1952 novel, A Stone for Danny Fisher, was adapted into a 1958 motion picture King Creole, which starred Elvis Presley.
He would become arguably the world's bestselling author, publishing over 20 books which were translated into 32 languages and sold over 750 million copies. Among his best-known books is The Carpetbaggers, loosely based on the life of Howard Hughes, taking the reader from New York to California, from the prosperity of the aeronautical industry to the glamour of Hollywood.
I think that if you like one Robbins' book you'll like them all. I've read most of them during the high school and I enjoyed them very much. Maybe because his characters were always so defined; and he had interesting plots. He kept you awake and turning pages. I loved his male characters, always strong personas, who have had difficult and scary upbringing, they were balancing on a wire between the shades of a good fella – bad fella, but they still ended up being good people. Females, on the other hand, were really battling for their right to be equal to men. They were always little bit lonely, because you can't have it all. Personal success is not connected with professional life, and vice versa.
He found gold mines within his stories and he knew how to develop them and make them readable.
030219 from ??? childhood: like all these Robbins books, i do not know when i read it first, but it definitely had typicasl role in misinforming me about sex. this one i am fairly sure i had read ppbk (mom's bookshelves) before 17, interesting because it was the first roman a clef i had read, and this was connected to Hollywood and gangsters...
This is my first Harold Robbins book. I enjoyed the plot and storyline, which explored every character's life without over kill. Because the setting was decades ago, the crime was probably considered even more horrific, especially for a well to do family. It was well written with a predictable ending but there were surprises and twists that kept me involved and eager to read on.
This was an impulse nostalgia read. It was like I was 14 and borrowing this off my mom's bookshelf again. This is not a racy book, certainly not by 21st c. standards. But it IS shocking to see the cultural norms of 1962 right there in B&W, just like the TVs were. A few pages in and a pregnant woman, with a healthy outdoorsy lifestyle, is sipping Scotch and lighting up a smoke. A few chapters in and there's dialog such as "I'm done being rational; now I'm just going to be a woman." I kid you not. Oh how far we've come, people.
Robbins became famous for basing his stories on people and events that were often splashed across newspaper headlines - that was certainly the case in this novel based on the notorious Lana Turner/Johnny Stompanato/Cheryl Crane murder scandal of 1958 - despite this apparent lapse of taste (the novel appeared a mere four years after the scandal), it's actually one of Robbins' better novels, and in my humble opinion his last of any consequence - one could skip all of his subsequent novels and not miss very much.
WHERE LOVE HAS GONE was filmed in 1964 with Susan Hayward and Bette Davis going head-to-head - Davis has the film's best line: "Somewhere along the line the world has lost all of its standards and all of its taste."
After his teenage daughter Danny is arrested for the murder of his ex-wife's current lover, Luke Miller recalls his marriage to Valerie Hayden and the subsequent events which led to the tragedy. The lurid story seems to have been suggested by the real-life Lana Turner/Johnny Stompanato/Cheryl Crane murder scandal of six years earlier when Lana's daughter Cheryl stabbed her mother's boyfriend (Stompanato) to death in the bedroom of Lana's Beverly Hills home.
silly dated story of a teen who stabs her mother s lover to death. based on the true lana turner tragedy or i should say loosely based on that news story. robbins sold 750 million books to people wanting vicarious thrills involving sex and violence. his books are still in our public libraries but are mild compared to contempory fiction.

Nora Hayden is a beautiful and highly talented artist, she seems to have everything and then yet one day her daughter supposedly kills her lover. Her absent father is called and races to the trial. But he suspects things aren't what they seem. Banished by Nora from Dani's life, he is a virtual stranger to her but he cannot conceive the daughter he knew as a young child could be so vicious. He starts to dig into the case and finds things below the surface he had no idea of. This was a complex novel of family relationships, lust and obsession cleverly drawn out into a court case concerning a minor. A really gripping read.
Definitely not a good book but in the context of Mad Men S05E04 (being read by gramma Pauline) it’s really interesting. You can see Don in the Luke and Nora characters and of course Sally as Dani. The secrets of women in the panty hose ad campaign is also a nice nod to the book, as is the returning war hero who can’t leave for good. In addition, the fact that the episode features two murders is really clever (one real, one in dream sequence).
I would have never read this book if not for Mad Men and it just makes it so much better.
It was a good book.. But the twist at the end was a bit infuriating. Turned out the mother was the one who committed the murder- and nobody even talked about that. They just went through with punishing the kid Dani who took the blame for it. The wife in the book is a horrible character who you just HATE she's such a horrible person!

Puikiai parašyta merginos paauglės patirta krizė. Viskas pateikiama per tėvų, (daugiausiai tėvo daug metų nemačiusio dukters), situacijos supratimą ir vertinimą. Sunkūs išgyvenimai, mėginimas savaip įveikti ištikusias bėdas, kartais visiškai nesuprantamais būdais.
The story swooped me up and held me to the last page. I love the character Luke, and I felt like I as walking the entire story out in his shoes. It's an excellent read
I would rate this around 3.5* because is found myself a bit confused at times about what was going on but I did ultimately like the book. It’s my first book by this author and I will check out some of his other books.
I wasn't sure about this as I was reading it - seemed classic noir without much really added to make it stand out, but it got better and more complex as the story unfolded. Quite good with an interesting and not expected love triangle - and a satisfying happy ending.
