This is a child's vision of events from when she was six and living in Botswana with her English mother and native father. The story concerns the family's disastrous friendship with a white couple, and most striking is the child's sense of identity and her insights into white behaviour.

About the author

I'm a writer, teacher and journalist, the author of six novels and eight non-fiction books. Many of my early books were inspired by the 12 years I spent in Botswana, where I worked as a teacher, human rights journalist and newspaper editor. My more recent books have a criminal theme, including The Ghost of Lily Painter, based on the true story of two Edwardian baby farmers, and Bad Girls: A History of Rebels & Renegades, nominated for the Orwell Prize for Political Writing 2019.
My latest novel is Mr Dickens & the Mystery at Fort House, the first book in the Seaside Detective series, to be published in April 2027.
