Joe Dillard #10

Last Resort: A New Joe Dillard Novel

Rate this book
The New Joe Dillard Novel.

A young girl vanishes without a trace in the dead of night.

Was her menacing absentee father involved? Or did something even more sinister occur?

In the tenth installment of the best-selling Joe Dillard series, Joe finds himself turning 50 and on the brink of despair. His involvement in his law practice has tapered to the point of near retirement. He spends his days with his wife, Caroline, who is finally succumbing to the ravages of cancer after a decade-long battle. His son, Jack, is struggling with alcohol abuse and self-loathing after accidentally killing a young mother while protecting the woman he hopes to marry. Joe is nearing the end of his rope.

When the girl goes missing, Joe learns she is a member of Jack’s little league team. Her disappearance derails his already teetering son and starts a ticking clock. If she’s not found within 48 hours, the chances of recovering her alive dwindle to nearly zero. Joe knows this, so Caroline charges him with finding her.

As the investigation ramps up, law enforcement quickly zeroes in on a likely perpetrator. The identity of the prime suspect hits closer to home than Joe could have possibly imagined, adding frantic urgency to his quest to find the girl.

“Pratt’s richly developed characters are vivid and believable, especially the strong Southern women who fight their male-dominated culture from behind a façade of vulnerability.” (Publishers Weekly)

Long a fan of Scott Pratt and the Joe Dillard series, I was saddened when I learned of the author’s passing. However, through some great work and likely a great deal of research, J.D. Pratt took the reins and has released this latest novel in the series. Joe Dillard’s life has always had some strong ties to the elder Pratt, which is apparent in this piece, as well as some of the struggles that are addressed. Rich in action and suspense, the story explores human trafficking and how one man’s kindness can be spun into a world of trouble by those who act first and seek answers later. I was gripped as I read this book and know Scott Pratt would be proud of his son’s work advancing the series.

After years practicing the law, Joe Dillard has begun to see a light at the end of another tunnel. As Joe turns fifty, he begins to pull back from his law practice, leaving it to his son, Jack, and soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Charlie. This allows Joe to focus on things with his wife. Caroline, long his rock and cornerstone, has been battling cancer for the last decade and things have started taking a turn for the worse. Jack, while a great asset to the community and a blossoming lawyer, has struggled with drugs and alcohol, as well as a shooting that left a young mother dead. Looking back, Joe has seen a great deal and is ready to pack it in to enjoy what years he has left.

When Abby Pruitt goes missing in town, many take notice. Abby is eleven and a star on the little league team that Jack coaches, making her disappearance even more troubling to the younger Dillard. With little evidence, Jack begins spiralling out of control, panicked that Abby’s estranged father might have come to force a relationship with the young girl.

As rumours build that Abby has been murdered, the authorities ramp up the investigation. A prime suspect emerges, someone no one could have predicted. The suspect hits home for Joe Dillard and he must try to come to terms with it, while fighting to clear the air. All the while, Caroline begins her final push towards an end result, leaving Joe torn where to place his attention and hope to help those he loves.

While many think Abby dead, she knows her fate is much worse. Having been removed from her home, she is being shipped out to live the life of a trafficked girl, sold into the world of sex and pedophiles. While Abby has gumption and patience, this is nothing like what she as seen before, leaving her to wonder if she will leave alive or mentally intact. With ruthless men sending her around like a piece of livestock, she can only hope that someone will miss her enough to save her. A gripping story that pulls on the heartstrings of the reader as the truth for justice occurs through short chapters. J.D. Pratt does a masterful job with this piece,

The action from this book is non-stop and ever-evolving. A strong narrative foundation provides the reader with something well worth their while and I cannot say enough about how well Pratt pushes things along in an effective manner. Working through some dark topics, the story meanders and makes a great impact in all the right ways while the reader can only flip pages and hope to learn something by the final reveal.

Character development is great in this series and this book is no exception. While I have been slowly reading the books over the course of a number of years, I have become accustomed to many who grace the pages of the book. The character development and backstory is rich and offers the reader something onto which they can find solace and excitement. Even the one-off characters have a life of their own in this piece, dark as some might be.

Plot development and delivery is key to the success of this book. The twists that occur throughout keep things from being too predictable, but also add a flavouring to the larger story at hand. Dark, troubling, and highly controversial, the story has a life of its own as Pratt tries to keep things from being too predictable. I quite enjoyed the journey this book presented and hope there will be more, if only to set things straight for Joe and Jack Dillard, putting all in order the the series fan.

Kudos, Mr. Pratt, for a great piece that resonates for series fans, as they fondly remember your father.

Wow! Joe Dillard is really back!

Scott Pratt's original Joe Dillard took a little hiccup break after the passing of Scott. But his family has kept the excellent series alive and doing justice to the books. I loved reading this one. I couldn't put it down. It kept me guessing and thoroughly enjoying it. Keep them coming!

I am a reader and not a writer. I rarely review books, but felt this was a "must". I have loved reading Scott Pratt's Joe Dillard series for years. Mr. Pratt is a wonderful writer and I have felt more a part of "The Dillard Family" with each book. I dreaded reading this book (This is NOT a spoiler), as I knew it was a final chapter. It was the best of all of Mr. Pratt's books by far and I look forward to reading more from his son.

I have just recently discovered the Joe Dillard books by Scott Pratt. OMG, this was the best series I have read in a long time. I was hooked and had to read all of them! It felt like I knew the characters personally. Loved the Dillard family and Joe's sheriff buddy Leon Bates. This last book was bitter sweet because I knew what the outcome would be. I read all 10 books in 2 weeks!!! Could not put them down. Highly recommend.❤

I won this book in a giveaway a while back, but just got around to reading it. This is my first Scott Pratt novel, and unfortunately it had to be the last one in the series (and also not technically written by Scott). The first half of the book was going strong, but towards the middle it started to fizzle out and slow down a bit for me. I did feel like there was a bit of word filler that could have been omitted, but without it, he may not have driven his point home. Without giving away too much, I did have mixed feelings about the sex ring. The treatment of the girls was definitely something I would never imagine to happen in real life, but with the Epsteins' of the world, it kind of put things into perspective. It's something that is not talked about enough and we as a society put a blindfold over to ignore a problem that is very much real and dangerous.

I didn't know he had died until I read the end of this book. It was written by his family and I think they did a good job. I for one will miss him dearly!!! I've been reading his books for years and have always enjoyed them.

This is the final installment of Joe Dillard' serie. It was a fun ride, ten books in a row but it was somehow downhill. This review encompasses the whole ten novels. The serie starts as a legal thriller (a la Mickey Haller / Jack Brigance) and it ends as an action thriller (a la Jack Reacher / Lucas Davenport). This is a minus for me. On the other end the books have a consistent group of characters, the family first, then friends and also recurring enemies and all of them grow, change, develop in a interesting way, making the whole reading overall enjoyable. This last installment is meant to be the end of the serie and picks up all the loose ends, the sub-plots and Joe's final decisions. If you are looking for a legal thriller serie, you can find more on-topic books, if you like a lawyer with a hot temper and an inclination for guns, this serie is for you.

Always filled with action and a fast read. Keeps you flipping pages and holds your interest. I equate the Scott Pratt, Joe Dillard series with the John Sanford, Prey series, the Minnesota super cop, Lucas Davenport novels. If you like a good story of good vs evil, read these. I'm sure you will enjoy them.

A Sentimental Journey

I have to admit I was a little reluctant to read this book knowing Scott had passed. I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the book very much. It was a great adventure and I cried when Joe listened to Caroline's final words. I thought it ended well with Joe and Rio on the beach in his favorite place. I recommend the book to all Joe Dillard fans. Dylan did a wonderful job!

Scott Pratt wrote from the heart. In all of the books of his I had read, I felt that the autobiographical element was always near the surface. His ability to convey so many facets of life was extraordinary. While this novel was actually written by his son, the son had obviously captured much of the essence of his father.
In all of his books, the evil characters are truly evil, with the exception of Erlene. The suffering of children and young people was poignant.
I will miss his writing.

Scott & JD Pratt return following Blood is Black (5 Stars—Presley Carter #1) with the highly anticipated popular Joe Dillard Series (#10), LAST RESORT —The most emotional and action-packed thriller yet! Joe is desperate to save his dying wife, a kidnapped girl from sex trafficking, and his son in jail, being set up for murder while feeling responsible for it all.

First, thank you, Dylan and family, for sharing this poignant story with Scott's readers. Scott and Kristy would be proud you are carrying on their legacy! With the help of your family, ghostwriters, and all who had a part in this undertaking, thank you—LAST RESORT exceeded all expectations and then some! Please, do not let this be the last one in this series.

"I have long feared that my sins would return to visit me, and the cost is more than I can bear."
—Benjamin Martin (character), The Patriot

OK, guys, when I am passionate about a book, the review is long! I want everyone to read this book. Checks all the boxes for me.

Someone must pick up this series for a captivating TV series! 🎬

Joe Dillard, attorney is turning 50. He has cut back on his time with the law practice, allowing his son and fiancee to take over most cases.

He has a lot to be grateful for. However, his loving wife, Caroline, has had enough of chemo and her courageous fight with cancer. She announces to Joe and the family she will not be going back on chemo, and hospice is being called in. Joe is devastated and wants to spend every moment with his beloved wife.

However, things get complicated five days later, and his wife instructs him to find this girl and clear their son's name.

There is a reason she knows Joe must find this girl before it is too late. He witnessed his older sister, Sarah, being raped by their uncle, Raymond, when he was only 8 yrs old, and he could not stop it. It still haunts him to this day.

Sarah owns a restaurant and has a young daughter, Grace. They are close.

Abby Pruitt is only 11 yrs old. A lovely girl. She is innocent. A rough life. They live in a trailer away from town, and her mom, Verna, stays high, drunk, and on drugs most of the time—her father, Greg, has been in prison for all sorts of things, takes bets on his kid's games, meth kitchens, criminal activity, and more. Kidnapped by sex trafficking.

Did either of the parents play a part in Abby's kidnapping, serving her to wolves and predators?

Jack Dillard, attorney (Joe's son) in practice together, is Abby's baseball coach and mentor. She is a star. Jack is soon to be married to Charlie, an attorney in the same law firm.

Abby has been kidnapped by monsters pretending they were from social services. Now Abby finds herself a part of a sex trafficking ring. How will she escape these madmen? She is an innocent little girl.

The people responsible for the sex trafficking ring are intelligent, heavily connected, politicians, senators, wealthy, and have done a great job setting up Jack as the one who took her, incriminating evidence and falsified videos. Now he is in jail for murder.

Jack had experienced some difficult times (former book) when he had to murder someone to protect himself and his soon-to-be wife. He was drinking more than usual, and now this.

There are people on Monster's payroll that will have him killed if needed while in jail tormenting him. Someone is out for revenge. A former enemy of Joe Dillard's that wants to take down him and his family. REVENGE.

Joe must help Abby and his son Jack. In the past, being impulsive, Joe has been known to take the law into his own hands for justice. He is about to do the same when he goes rogue, but Carolina speaks to him—telling him to slow down and think things through with a level head.

Pratt ratchets up the suspense and tension with Joe going rogue, trying to track down the sex trafficking ring and save Abby before it is too late. How will he escape?

Two emergent situations, side by side, require a hundred percent of Joe's attention. Now he was at forty-perfect capacity, more than he could handle, but he had promised his dying wife.

Meanwhile, on the home front, Joe's daughter Lilly, soon to be daughter in law (attorney-Charlie), and Sarah (Joe's sister), with the help of Arlene (former strip club owner)—form the Jonesborough Women's Investigative Committee—with the support of Leon Bates, Sherriff (Arlene and Leon are a riot together), Stony a PI, Jim Beaumont, attorney, the FBI, and more are working diligently to clear Jack, find Abby and Joe and gather information against the bad guys.

Human trafficking does not remain in one place long. Joe is out on his own and not communicating. He has to save Abby and his son. He must follow the trail. However, someone is providing bread crumbs leading him to slaughter.

Influential and wealthy men and senators are paying people to bring in young, innocent girls and boys against their will for these sick predators, disguised as golf tournaments and weekend entertainment, and discarding them.

Alternating from Joe, the family back home, Jack in jail, the predators, and Abby in her prison with other gals, the stakes are high, and the clock is TICKING in a race against time. The brutal predators they are tracking are ready to kill in Black Canyon, Arizona, near Sedona, to keep their secrets hidden.

Who will survive?

Fueled with high-adrenaline, action-packed, well-developed characters with plenty of emotions and twists, LAST RESORT is a must-read for Joe Dillard and Scott Pratt fans—and new readers.

STELLAR! A thoroughly engrossing thriller, LAST RESORT offers plenty of shocking scenes and clever surprises. Not only is this a well-written knock-out legal crime thriller, but it has loads of HEART. There is a lot of soul-searching on Joe's part (more philosophical); trust me, you will shed a tear or two.

PS I loved the Lake Norman, NC reference, where I am from—for fans of Grisham, Connelly, and Aime Austin.

Tommy is just one of the heroes of this nail-biting crime thriller—I LOVED the EPILOGUE! I am sure other readers and fans will agree that the Joe Dillard family is part of our family, and I hope it continues.

Now, please do NOT let Joe Dillard end! He is only 50 yrs old with many years left. I would like to see more, and maybe a spin-off with Jack and Charlie with cameo appearances from Joe, Rio (dog), Lily, Sarah, Grace, Abby, and always Leon & Erlene. Maybe Leon should be a PI, and he and Joe can work together.

This book was very well done and seamless. Scott would be proud. Thank you, Dylan and the family, for keeping her dad's legacy alive. Looking forward to more from Joe and cannot wait for the next Presley Carter!

"Every man's life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another." —Ernest Hemingway

I loved this so much! I purchased the e-book, paperback, and the audio narrated by the fabulous Tim Campbell. He is genuinely Joe Dillard (no one else can play this part like Tim!) I have listened to every one of them. OUTSTANDING!

As you can tell, I adored this book! Crime legal thrillers are my favorite, and have read all the Joe Dillard Series. Did you know there is a hardcover, Collector's Edition available? I have ordered and cannot wait to add to my collection. A classic for every home library.

Sorry for the delay in posting; been swamped with my website client's work.

Not as good as I wanted....

The book definitely tries hard to be a lot of the other Joe Dillard series. It is a bit hokey and far fetched. I was truly hoping for another great book about Joe and his family, but I was a bit disappointed. Sorry to the authors who wrote the book, but it just falls short from the past great books written by Scott Pratt. He will be a hard act to follow. Thanks for the good effort, I do miss reading this great author.

This one broke my heart, even before I laid eyes on my copy.
I don't know how many of Scott Pratt's books I've read, because I kept lousy records, but it's possible I read everything. I know I've been in both Joe Dillard and Darren Street universes. I started to go back to individual books, and use a trick to see if I had reviewed them, but I had to give that up; it got too emotional.
The details of the story are what got them notoriety, I suppose; so MANY people love legal thrillers. I couldn't tell you which plots came from his own legal practice, but he also used his life in east Tennessee to provide his material. I soon discovered that wasn't what gave his books life, though.
Joe Dillard was married to and deeply in love with Caroline, a beautiful, high-energy, gifted dance instructor. Over the course of the 10 Joe Dillard novels, we are taken for a scenic tour of what it's like to get a cancer diagnosis.
That was 100% based on the journey that Kristy, Scott's beloved wife, was making.
I had a very brief exchange of emails with Scott. In my 2018 review of "Due Process," I wrote about Caroline:
"By continuing her fight for life, she is giving Dillard a reason to go on. Her example is breath-taking, and we must all recognize it for what it is, and honor her for all she has done. As long as she is determined to keep breathing in and out, NOBODY has permission to quit."

Scott responded to that in an email to me:
"...and you're right, as long as Caroline (and my sweet Kristy) continues to fight, nobody should be allowed to quit. "

And then, as we had all hoped WOULDN'T happen, Kristy passed, and a few months later, Scott passed as well.
Scott's son, J.D., does us the great good kindness of writing this final chapter, giving us his own literary view of the real trauma the family faced. In doing so, he has helped this fan get some closure, and for that, I'm grateful. I applaud his courage in opening his heart to us, and I trust that the effort was healing for him as well.
Peace be on your household.

Eleven-year-old Abby Pruitt is missing. Someone kidnapped her. Because the authors wrote this character so vividly, she will draw you to her in an electrified way. You first see her on the baseball diamond, and she’s an amazing player. No, not for a girl. I mean she’s an amazing player. Her birth father is a real piece of work, and the mother isn’t much to get excited about either. She has a close relationship with her coach, Jack Dillard, Joe’s son and partner in the family law office.

You don’t read a great deal early on about how someone kidnapped her, but you cross your fingers in hope when she finds a way to escape the truck in which she’s been riding for hours. Of course, she doesn’t escape. She’s part of a human trafficking ring that services pedophiles. Parts of this are painful to read, but the end is wonderfully satisfying if you enjoy the concept of prison and death for pedophiles.

While Joe Dillard is seeking Abby, his wife, Caroline, loses her years-long battle with cancer. Worse still, the cops are sure Joe’s son and law partner, Jack, is guilty of sexually assaulting and even killing Abby Pruitt.

While Joe knows he needs to be there for his son, it’s more important to him for Jack’s sake that he find the girl any way he can. His search takes him into Texas and a house where underage girls await assignments to sex up the sick pukes who find their forced attention pleasurable.

From Texas, Joe headed for suburban Phoenix following clues that Abby is still alive and living in a prepubescent girl warehouse near Phoenix.

The end of this is magnificently satisfying and undisclosed in this review. If you don’t appreciate paranormal stuff in your books, and I’m one who doesn’t, you should know that Joe and Caroline converse—she through his dreams from a kayak in the ocean. I would normally grumble about things like that, but the authors crafted this so skillfully that her presence from the afterlife was necessary.

This is easily the best and most memorable book in the entire series.

Scott Pratt is a genius! He has managed to write another great and amazing Joe Dillard novel!

I have read every Joe Dillard novel Scott Pratt has ever written! I have loved every single one of them without any complaints! This book is no different. Actually, it is even greater than the others if that is even possible! This book will have you laughing and crying and so angry that you want to become a character yourself so that you can help Joe fight the bad guys and make them suffer a little... or a lot! In this novel, we have all our familiar characters we have grown to love! The tragedies of this book will crush you! Because we love these characters as if we've known them for years! Joe Dillard's anger finally catches up with him, and time is not on his side in this novel! His family each and everyone will suffer a consequence of his anger in the past, however, not because Joe did something wrong, but because he allowed his anger to overtake his reasoning. Yet, in the end, his anger saves lives and gives hope to many others! You won't want to put this book down! So start it when you have time to stay up all night reading it and not have to work in the morning! I read it in one night. As I have done all of Scott Pratt's Joe Dillard novels! Thank you, Sir Scott Pratt! You are a genius! And I hope this is not the last of our Joe Dillard novels! We all need he and his friends and family in our lives for a long time to come!

Audiobook.

Legal, investigative, and police procedurals. Joe Dillard is a criminal defense lawyer with flaws - specifically, a short fuse nearly always directed toward someone anyone would like to punch out. Joe is fiercely defensive of his family, particularly his wife. From early in the series, Caroline's battle with cancer is almost another character. The legal community respects Joe, and he has influential friends, including the local sheriff and law enforcement, rare for a defense attorney. Each book consists of a stand-alone story of rape, murder, missing people, mobs, addicts, crooked cops, devious politicians, amoral judges, and more - each story is unique and creative. Read in sequence for continuity and character development.

Liked. Stories! It's just a great series with excellent, page-turning plots. No sex, no objectionable language. No trouble discerning who is speaking to whom. Narration and production are fine.

Not so hot. Not much! Bumped the audio speed on the iPhone to 1.4 - a preference, not criticism.

The series consists of 10 full-length novels. Books 1-4 and 5-8 are available in two box sets, books 9 and 10 in separate purchases. Well worth the investment. Written by Scott Pratt, narrated by Tim Campbell, over 70 hours of listening in unabridged format, released from September 22 through June 2023.

Looking for a good series? Here ya go!!

Here I am once again, grieving the end of an era. Years ago, I read books 1–9 of this 10-book series after a dear friend introduced me to Scott Pratt’s work. From the moment I met Joe Dillard and his family, I was hooked. This genre—Southern Crime Fiction—has become one of my favorites, and I became deeply invested in these characters and their stories.

When I heard of Scott Pratt’s passing, I was devastated. I assumed book 9 would be the end, but last year, I discovered that book 10 had been published, co-written by Pratt’s son—a beautiful tribute to his late father.

This final installment was incredibly emotional. The Dillard family is going through a major transition, and the story’s intensity is heightened by a kidnapping and the unraveling of a crime ring. Joe remains strong and determined, but there’s a newfound vulnerability in him that we haven’t seen before. I especially loved how the Dillard women took center stage, showing resilience and unity as they worked to solve the case and keep the family together.

The ending hit me hard, bringing me to tears as I realized how profoundly the Dillard family had changed. In a way, I’m mourning again—both the close of this book and the uncertainty of whether the series will continue. But one thing is certain: this series will always be my favorite.

Excellent

I don't think I could have expected a better ending to the Joe Dillard series. I think I have been waiting for it since Scott had to stop his own writing. Perhaps this is an unwelcome thing for the current authors to hear, if they read any of these reviews. I found it difficult to want to read the " shadow " books written in partnership with Scott Pratt's name. At least until I happened to read the Presley Carter book. It was good, very good, well up to the standards that Scott had set. And then this one, Last Resort attributed to Scott but also J. D. Both of these stories have been well put together, well designed plots, lots of humanity, a rare ability in the author to expose and reflect on the main character's thinking and caring, deeper emotions and fragilities. I must say I also like the subtle but believable spiritual element. So I hope that J. D. Pratt keeps writing, bringing us another Presley Carter story. As an aside, I wouldn't mind seeing the Thomas at the end of Last Resort finding his way into a Presley story.

Book 10 in series Joe Dillard by Scott Pratt, Defense Lawyer. Scott Pratt wrote nine books about his life and activities and then unfortunately, died. This book was left behind and was completed by J.D. Pratt. It wraps up the series and is very well done. I could not put it down. Joe is being set up. His wife, Caroline, has been battling cancer in every book but finally is unable to beat back the disease. There is lots of family angst and lots of working together to get to the bottom of who took the remarkable baseball player, Amy Pruitt Age 11. There is a sex ring operating in East Tennessee. It’s is a thriller from the first line. I read it all in one sitting (almost all night) but could not put it down. I recommend starting with Book 1 before tackling Book 10 otherwise you will not know some very important background on the characters. A great character and great read, I am so sorry Scott Pratt died but this book helps to move on. Hope to see more books under his byline.

Great book! Wow!

I've been a long-time fan of Scott Pratt, loved the Joe Dillard series in particular. Like all of his fans, I have been mourning his untimely passing since it happened. When I saw this final installment in the Joe Dillard series come out, I was hesitant, because I was skeptical that anyone, even his son, could keep the magic going. Boy, was I wrong! The magic is here and on steroids, this an amazing book, and holy cow, it's hard to put it down! The twists and turns and surprises are fiendishly great. If you are contemplating reading this book, wonder no more. Jump right in. Don't say I didn't warn you when you find that it's the wee hours of the morning and you are still reading ;) Looking forward to reading the next book by Dylan and his co-conspirators. Thank you for keeping the stories coming!

I have really enjoyed the Joe Dillard series and “Due
Process” was one of his best. I was sorry to hear of his death but strangely happy that he had concluded the series just before he died.

This book is deeper than his other books as he becomes more philosophical about life and death. He also resolved to do something about his temper which has been a problem for him over the years.

It has almost all of the characters from the earlier novels oncluding two of my favorites Earlene Barlow and Leon Bates. The case revolves around a missing 11 year old girl who is missing and believed murdered by Dillard’s son Jack. And there is startling evidence that he may have done it. He is arrested and the family works to find out the truth!

I don’t want to spoil the rest of the story! But enjoy

Five stars for "Last Resort."
I fell in love with the Joe Dillard series and was saddened by his passing. When I saw this book come out, I just had to have it. Last Resort did not disappoint!
Last Resort deals with a subject that ravages today's society more than it should. It also parallels a recent case that rocked many people and made us wonder how such depravity could exist. But, the powers of good triumphed over the evilness in this novel. Child trafficking is a blight on our society, and I can only hope that one day it can be eradicated.
Joe Dillard was plagued all his life by the fact that he hadn't been able to save his sister from being raped when they were children, but in Last Resort, Joe faces his demons and casts them out. This book is a must-read, as difficult as it might be on many pages.

A life well lived

Spoiler alert !!! After finishing book # 9 , I had gone to the facebook Fratt Pack page to leave a comment know what Last Resort would lead to. It was there that I learned what happened to Scott, it just took my breath away ! Whenever I read any novel I immerse myself with the characters and feel like I’m a part of the family, especially with the Dillard series. I actually felt that I’ve been with each of them throughout their experiences. And I’ll tell you that when Joe read Caroline’s final words, I’m not ashamed to admit I wept just as hard as he did, but rejoiced for him when he went on his journey to find himself. I’ll continue to follow the rest of his books and continue with Dylan’s books going forward. To Scott & Kristy may you memories be a blessing…

Tearjerker

I have read every single Joe Dillard novel at least once, others several times. This one is the most difficult to read, but I was unable to put it down. Good thing I am on vacation, because I never left my seat, not even to eat!! Though many parts of the story were traumatic and painful to read (I didn't survive childhood unscathed either), there was resolution, closure to the story. There were heroic actions by several people, despite great risk to themselves. But, in the end, it was love, and the pureness of human spirit that won out despite the overwhelming evil that the families faced. Resilience. I cannot think of a better word. Sorry, Mr Pratt. You will not be able to easily top this one.

I've followed the career and family life of Joe Dillard through Mr. Pratt's books. This book was the best of the series and was a thinly veiled tale where Jeffrey Epstein was replaced by a character by the name of Godfrey Edelberg, aka "God." This is a fast moving book that doesn't take place in a courtroom. It continues to highlight the long time love affair between Joe and his wife, Caroline.
Joe is a conflicted character who is often blinded by his rage. His friend, Sheriff Leon Bates is featured in this book, along with some other characters from past novels. I hope that Mr. Pratt writes more Joe Dillard books, so we can see where he goes after the events of the well written story. I recommend starting in the beginning, and then reading this one.
