About the author

David Irons was the kid who went to his room to watch and read horror when his relatives came round. It paid off. When he left his room, he became an award-winning filmmaker and writer living on the south coast of England. His films, colourful and stylish in design, have won awards at the Cambridge Film festival, Las Vegas VIFF festival, and LA Independent Festival for cinematography, editing, writing, and directing. '7 Winters Alone' - a sci-fi, horror short - was a winner in David Lynch's 2014 Short Film Competition.

In 2019 David had his first novel, Night Waves, published, followed by Night Creepers, Polybius, and The Bloody Tracks of Bigfoot in 2020 - 2021 from Severed Press. Since then, David has become a Splatterpunk award-nominated writer for his '80s summer camp slasher, 'Don't Go To Wheelchair Camp.'

The moral of this story is to be weird and stay in your room. It pays off in the end.

Hell yeah!

David Irons does it again with an absolute wild gory slasher novel. It follows Kelly the head cheerleader of the local school. Kelly has had a hard and traumatic life to say the least being witness to the horrific blood soaked deaths of her mother and father.

That is all in the past now and with a lot of therapy she has totally forgotten these memories and is living her "Perfect life". Kelly is in love with the head of the football team Danny and they are going to live happily ever after.......

That is until Danny reveals he is gay and in love with one of the male cheerleaders Freddie. This revelation makes something snap in her mind and now everything wont be 'perfect' anymore. Kelly will stop at nothing to be with Danny and with the help of someone from her past she will make sure that everyone who ever wronged her will pay.

What I loved about this and also Dont Go To Wheelchair Camp is it totally captures the 80s and 90s slasher movie feel in book form. Its basically feels like a movie as it plays out and is perfect in that sense. It's also so so funny with the 'Saved by the Bell' references and downright corny dialogue and situations. It's very gory and the deaths are all different, detailed, original and messed up. There is plenty of them as well and no one is safe from her homicidal rampage.

I don't know if there is a better writer out there at the moment who can write slasher themed books. I read half of this in one sitting as the pages just flew by getting wrapped up in it all.

If you are even remotely a fan of old school slasher movies then read this book. You can't get much more fun that this one.

I love high school horror, and I grew up watching 'saved by the bell', so this was a no brainer -must read!- for me. I'm pretty sure that I know someone else who will appreciate this book as much as I did. I'll recommend it to her...

After surviving a horrific bloodbath as a child, a now crazy-ass teen cheerleader retreats into a kind of 'saved by the bell' head-fantasy, where everything must be as perfect in real life as It is in the TV show. Things start to go very wrong when she finds out that the show is about to be cancelled, but that's just the start of her very bad day...

It's well written, funny, fast paced, and doesn't overstay It's welcome - The Perfect length for this kind of a story. It won't be the last book I read by David Irons. 4 Stars.

Wow! David Irons, in my opinion, a master of the slasher genre! He proved it without a doubt in Don't Go To Wheelchair Camp. Now, Cockblocker! Another gold trophy to this man please. Kelly es la perfecta animadora del equipo del instituto Silver Lake. Excelente estudiante, su destino es formar pareja y coronarse reina del baile con el capitán del equipo de fútbol, Danny. Pero la vida no es como ella ha aprendido en las comedias americanas y Danny bebe los vientos por un chico, Freddie Hernández.

Empiezo a estar un poco harto de los defensores de los extremos. El mundo está polarizado y como el mundo del terror está encajado en ese contexto también asiste al debate, en este caso de a favor/ en contra del terror elevado. En general no me gustan las bandas (bueno las de rock) y si me tengo que etiquetar en una yo estoy en la de los disfrutones.

No dejaos llevar por los prejuicios de si no leo esto porque no es terror elevado o tampoco porque es una petardada. Sentaos y disfrutad. Como lo hacíais cuando teníais 11 años y flipabais con Fray Perico y su borrico y luego con Terror en Vancouver.

Muerte a la iconoclastia, muerte a la ortodoxia y disfrutad de la vida que en cuanto os deis cuenta... se ha pasado...

Segunda novela editada de David Irons en nuestro país (la anterior fue la también divertidísima Mi ligue de la Ouija también publicada por Dimensiones Ocultas) pero antes de entrar en más materia tengo que lanzarle un mensaje al autor:

Dear David, you are wrong with your opinion about Canadian rock. Not only because Bryan Adams is the real boss of rock (how many of you lost your virginity with Bruce instead with Bryan). You made a mistake because the greatest band of all times, Rush, are Canadian too.

(David, miarma, has metido la pata hasta el corvejón con tu opinión sobre el rock canadiense. Bryan Adams es el puñetero jefe el rock. Quién ha camelado la primera vez con Bruce en lugar de con Bryan. Además la banda más grande del rock, Rush, da la puñetera casualidad de que son canadienses también.)

Una vez superado este interludio, desahogo, volvemos al libro.

Las trescientas páginas que componen esta fantástica novela me las leí de una sola sentada. El argumento es más sólido de lo que parece y en cuanto lees las primeras páginas va solo. El fuerte de David Irons son, una vez más, los personajes. Perfectamente trabajados y lo suficientemente carismáticos para que te importe, para bien o para mal, lo que les ocurre.

Lleno de homenajes a los grandes clásicos del terror (los tendréis que descubrir por vosotros mismos) y a esa sitcom que marcó la adolescencia de muchos: Salvados por la campana (las carcajadas y las situaciones que se producen debido a la obsesión de la protagonista por ella son deliciosos y delirantes).

Las escenas de acción y el gore que plantea es excelente y la moraleja final es más que necesaria reivindicarla en estos días (os podéis ir a la mierda los que decís que hoy en día no tienen sentido la lucha por los derechos del colectivo LGTBQ+) y me encanta que esté encarado de frente y sin caer en discursos manipuladores, si no en el respeto por todo y por todos.

En definitiva, un libro muy disfrutable, divertidísimo, que se lee como si vieras una película y que además cuenta con una traducción muy localizada gracias al trabajo de Roberto Carrasco.

Desde que era pequeño siempre sentí fascinación por el género de terror. Por esas historias que me aterraban, que me hacían sudar de pánico hasta empapar las sábanas cada noche, camuflado en el dormitorio tras el inexpugnable cobijo de las mantas. Esa sensación única ser repetía con cada uno de aquellos libros que traían portadas delirantes y macabras, donde el predominio de esqueletos, vampiros o asesinos de diversa índole distraían su evidente erotismo entre tinieblas y oscuridad. El éxito de haberme enfrentado a los miedos más ocultos hasta lograr superarlos sigue presente a día de hoy, pese al paso de los años y a más de una que otra noche de recurrentes pesadillas.
Quizás por eso comencé a amar esas historias. Y a sentir un cierto sentimiento de fraternidad con aquellos que entienden cuando me refiero con admiración a cualquiera de las animaladas más repudiables que se pueden plasmar en las obras de ficción. Todos nosotros nos reconocemos al vernos de lejos. El terror te estremece, te angustia y te acompaña al apagar la luz. Pero también puede divertirte hasta querer compartirlo con esa comunidad de amantes de lo grotesco.
De ahí que no puedo más que aplaudir la edición de obras como Cockblocker y todo lo que nos está trayendo últimamente Dimensiones oscuras. Propuestas únicas, cargadas de un precioso amor sin complejos por una manera de contar historias, carentes de vergüenza y que tienen el firme propósito de dar al lector lo que quiere de ellas. Son obras conscientes de que el contenido tiene que ser más poderoso que sus adornos, como igual de conscientes son de que los lectores aceptan sus reglas sin cuestionar lo inverosímil de la propuesta.
La obra de David Irons nos sorprende desde el primer capítulo con una enloquecida mujer que decide tomarse la justicia de su mano tras encontrar a su marido en circunstancias poco glamurosas, regalando un festín sangriento, y muy divertido, a los lectores para prevenirlos de todo lo que estará por venir. A partir de entonces, conoceremos a nuestra protagonista, testigo de la matanza, que ha interiorizado cada una de esas enseñanzas orientadas a poder ser la mujer perfecta.
Pero la perfección no es tan sencilla de alcanzar.
Lo que vendrá a continuación se podría resumir en una apuesta decidida por llenar la novela de todos los elementos reconocibles de esas películas y libros que tanto amamos, romper cualquier tipo de fronteras entre el lector y los personajes, y ponerse manos a la obra al grito de El terror elevado no es lo que vas a leer aquí. Y créanme que no dejas de pasar las páginas de la novela con una sonrisa que solo la entiende quien disfruta de ese modo de entender las historias.
El festival de situaciones ya por todos conocidas te hará aplaudir en más de un momento, en una clara apuesta por que el lector se divierta y sienta que el género que tanto disfruta sigue vivo y dispuesto a mostrarse en su plenitud. Hachas, ácido, huesos, mutilaciones, fuego, erotismo, penes, gente chiflada, abracitos, satanasas y la más divertida perversión (o perfección) harán lo necesario para que pases un buen rato contemplando el reverso tenebroso de las comedias románticas adolescentes.
Si a eso le añadimos una traducción tan delirante como acorde al original y una desbordante crítica soterrada al espíritu americano, bandera incluida, y a todo lo que debería ser perfecto en una sociedad, pues nos encontramos con un producto al que solo le falta un lazo rojo para regalárselo a nosotros, que amamos estas cosas.
Cierto es que no le gustará a todo el mundo, pero no menos cierto es que lo adorarán aquellos que saben de lo que hablo.

"Cockblocker", la nueva travesura de David Irons, es un frenético slasher queer que toma forma dentro de tu cabeza con la estética de "Salvados por la campana", la serie de televisión de los 90.
"Cockblocker" rezuma ritmo, ya desde sus primeras páginas.
Un primer capítulo maravilloso, que pone los cimientos del resto de la novela, de su tono, temática y límites. El resto de la novela es un relámpago furioso, un pasapáginas de primer nivel, de esos de empezar a leer y no parar hasta terminar.

David Irons es un experto en cultura pop, cine en vhs y películas de terror. "Cockblocker" está tan salpicado de guiños que creo que es imposible pillarlos todos.

"Cockblocker" es el slasher de Queer Horror definitivo, una divertidísima locura salvaje, llena de humor, diálogos chispeantes y cultura pop. Una novela rápida y dinámica, ágil y sangrienta, capaz de arrancarte más de una carcajada, tanto con sus situaciones como con su violencia a lo largo de sus 300 páginas.
Y eso no es sencillo.
Tienes que entrar al juego, claro. Tienes que ser consciente de que te estás enfrentando a un slasher gay, en el que Kelly va a intentar impedir que Danny y Freddie sigan con su amor quizás no tan perfecto, dentro del mundo propio de David Irons. Un mundo en el que "Salvados por la campana" es lo más, el mundo se ve a través de una tele de tubo y el vhs es el formato del futuro.
Ojalá triunfe el amor, es lo único que nos queda.

3,5. Kelly Kennedy es la adolescente americana perfecta, es guapa, es la animadora jefa y está enamorada del quarterback del equipo y todo parece indicar que el sentimiento es mutuo. Y aunque Kelly parece una persona modélica, su deseo por alcanzar la perfección está llegando a límites cada vez más extraños, mientras que su obsesión por la serie de televisión "Salvados por la campana" está alterando su sentido de la realidad. La verdad es que Kelly tiene un pasado traumático dormido en su memoria que solo está esperando un último chispazo para reaparecer con toda la fuerza. Este frágil equilibrio se rompe cuando Kelly descubre que Danny, el quaterback, no está enamorado de ella, sino de Freddie, un animador chico de su equipo. Kelly no permitirá que un romance gay triunfe en el instituto.

Como fanático absoluto del cine de slasher, siempre estoy en la captura de uno literario que me guste tanto como lo hacen las películas. Debo admitir que cuando descubrí "Cockblocker" pensé que su premisa era una auténtica fantasía y que me lanzaría a leerlo de cabeza, pero creyendo saber que sería un libro muy justito, que quizás conseguiría entretenerme, me daría mi dosis de persecuciones y sangre, pero poco más. Sin embargo, acabo esta novela con muy buen sabor de boca, no es una historia perfecta, pero es el primer slasher literario que leo, que de verdad lo es, que no finge ser un slasher para finalmente no cumplir ninguna de las claves del género, algo importantísimo, o peor aún, finge serlo para luego convertirse en otra cosa con pretensiones de ser algo más elevado, algo más profundo. Tal y como he dicho, "Cockblocker" no es perfecta, pero es un slasher muy resultón, que cumple a la perfección con lo que se le pide al género. Podríamos equipararla con cualquiera de esas películas de terror de serie b que vimos de jóvenes y que nos daban una grata sorpresa por lo buenas y entretenidas que eran. Y eso es lo que pasa con este libro, que te sorprende, cosa que, desde luego, no me esperaba.

Lo primero que destaca es su protagonista-villana, la desequilibrada Kelly Kennedy. Es una de esas villanas que nunca olvidas, igual de psicótica que Annie Wilkes de "Misery" o de sangrienta que Ghostface. Además, dentro de toda su locura, no para de ofrecer humor y tiene muchísimas salidas de tono que me hacían partirme de risa, otra clave del género muy recurrente y que no todos saben incluir bien. Kelly ve el mundo desde su perspectiva y desde esta, todo es válido para conseguir su final feliz, el que se merece. Lo dicho, me ha gustado mucho esta villana, una para no olvidar. Y, lamentablemente, tenemos pocas villanas femeninas en el género.

Otro punto muy importante, quizás el que más, son el grupo variopinto de personajes. Es necesario que estos sean muy diferentes, da igual que caigan en clichés, lo fundamental es que cada uno desempeñe bien su función. En "Cockblocker" nos encontramos con Jake, el matón de instituto, con Ginger, la malhablada amiga de Kelly, o Gretchen, la friki que se da cuenta de todo antes que los demás. Pero dentro de lo típico, el autor trae un elemento nuevo, la pareja gay coprotagonista. Pese a que Kelly es villana y protagonista, la introducción de Danny, el que haría el papel del chulo de clase, como un joven tierno y gay enamorado de otro chico ha sido una delicia para mí. El género incluye cada vez más personajes LGTB, pero no hay muchos que estén en el centro de la historia. No sabéis como he disfrutado de esto, me ha gustado mucho Danny, pero sobre todo me ha gustado Freddy.

Las persecuciones y muertes también cumplen un papel crucial en el slasher, y David Irons nos presenta muchas y muy diferentes, algunas incluso me han parecido muy ingeniosas, y ya es decir mucho para alguien que lleva 25 años consumiendo todo lo que puede del género. Estas escenas tienen un buen ritmo, se vuelven tensas y consiguen captar la atención de lector, incluso que sufras con sus personajes. Y son muy, muy sangrientas, ideales para los fanáticos del gore.

Para acabar, tengo que decir que el final me ha parecido impecable, espléndido. Una cosa con la que me he encontrado con demasiada frecuencia cuando de slashers se trata, es que un mal final, empaña una buena idea o un buen desarrollo. Me aterraba pensar que el disfrute podría verse afeado por un final que no me cautivase. Como me alegro de que no haya sido este el caso.

En definitiva, ¿recomiendo "Cockblocker" de David Irons? Definitivamente, sí. ¿Se la recomiendo a todo el mundo? Pues no, es necesario que te guste el género para que el lector pueda valorar todos esos detalles de los que hablo y de los que no. Pero si me estás leyendo y eres tan seguidor del slasher como yo, lánzate, sin lugar a dudas. Yo lo leí en inglés, pero también está en español, ¿qué más se puede pedir? Por favor, necesitamos más slashers literarios y con más personajes LGTB en ellos.

David Irons nunca decepciona con libros como Don't Go To Wheelchair Camp o Mi ligue de la Ouija. Esta vez desde Dimensiones Ocultas Roberto Carrasco se ha superado con la traducción y localización al castellano.

Fun, demented, and graphic!

I loved this book! It was a great throwback to the 80s/90s slashers with an infusion of obsessive behavior. The blend of humor with the graphic murders is well written, and having a gay romance be the heart of the story really sold me. When I learned about this book I was very excited, and it did not disappoint! The biggest issue I have is wondering if this was proof-read before release? There are many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. A few times it became distracting from the storytelling. If you can power through that, I definitely recommend this read if you're into dark comedies like Serial Mom and Drop Dead Gorgeous!

Me lo he pasado genial leyendo esta novela, es divertida y macabra como ninguna y muy pero que muy sangrienta. Aunque… ¿Qué esperabais siendo esto un slasher? No todas las historias son como Heartstopper.

David Irons nos trae a su nueva protagonista, Kelly, que está como un cencerro y nos cuenta cómo su decepción amorosa, es la gasolina que sirve para que todo se prenda fuego.

Es una novela que desde el principio te tiene en tensión sobre lo que va a ocurrir... Yo me puse muy nervioso leyéndola (en el mejor de los sentidos) no podía dejar de leer, porque quería ver, cuál era la siguiente gamberrada que venía y es que a David Irons, no le ganan en cuanto a humor gore... y en hacer que los personajes, aunque sean los más horribles... te puedan dar hasta un pelín de pena. Eso sí, en este libro yo estoy del lado de Freddie y Danny.

¿Quieres saber si tienen final feliz? Pues ya sabes lo que tienes que hacer.
Si te gusta reírte un rato, la sangre, los slashers y el amor… Esta es tu novela. Tolón, Tolón...

This book was Perrrrrrfect. Kelly the surviving daughter of her killer mother is a beautiful high school cheerleader. In her mind she is a character like Kelly from saved by the bell, live studio audience included.
When Kelly’s perfect existence is shattered due to her boyfriend not being who she expected, she turns into a psychopath like her mom. Kelly needs everything to be perfect and will stop at nothing to make it happen.
This was such a great 90s splatter story which made me laugh numerous times.
True to David irons writing this was a fun and entertaining read.
Highly recommend.

Ya llevo varios libros leídos de David Irons así que, cuando empiezo una nueva historia suya, sé lo que me voy a encontrar: gore, humor y muchas referencias pop. En ese sentido Cockblocker me da exactamente lo que busco de Irons y lo hace pisando el acelerador desde el primer capítulo. Nada que objetar a eso, hemos venido a leer una gamberrada en la que todo está permitido.

El libro empieza por todo lo alto y ya no se detiene. Tiene un ritmo endiablado, quizá más que Mi ligue de la Ouija, aunque a nivel de personajes y desarrollo me gustó más Mi ligue de la Ouija. Esto es slasher que va a por todas y que no deja títere con cabezas y si eso es lo que buscas, te flipará el libro.

I saw this advertised on Facebook and the premise caught my attention. It's a fun, gory read with a few parts I even found disturbing which in context of horror was wonderful. It's pacing is great and I love that the entire plot of the book takes place over the course of a day. It set up plenty of tension and kept the pages turning.
There were issues I had with some of it, however the most glaring one was the lack of editing. Generally I can overlook some, but there were enough to remove you from the plot especially when names were getting jumbled around.
Beyond that, it's a fun read with an amazing cover.

Otra fabulosa gamberrada de David Irons. Una historia de amor, violencia, locura y desenfreno, donde de lo primero hay poco y del resto hay a calderaos.

No había terminado el primer capítulo y ya me tenía llorando de la risa, y es que este slasher tiene todos los ingredientes para triunfar, entre quien lo sepa disfrutar; ambientación noventera, ritmo frenético, sangre a mansalva, escenas gore, muchísimo humor negro, una tarada como protagonista y una narración de película, o de serie de los 90, más bien.

El autor me conquistó con “Mi ligue de la ouija” y “Cockblocker”, a pesar de haberme gustado un pelitín menos (me falló un poco el final), no me ha defraudado.
Le ruego encarecidamente a la editorial, Dimensiones Ocultas, que siga alimentando nuestros monstruos con mucho más Irons.

Una lectura PERFECTA! (Quien ya haya leído el libro, entenderá mucho mejor la frase).

Kelly es una psicópata que nos hará odiarla y amarla a vez y que nos llevará de la mano hacia la nostalgia de las tardes de verano viendo la serie "Salvados por la campana". Vas a querer volver a ver esa serie cuando termines de leer el libro, que por cierto, se lee casi de una sentada porque lo estás pasando tan mal/bien, que no eres capaz de dejarlo.

Las historias de David Irons nunca dejan indiferentes, y la traducción de Roberto Carrasco es especialmente destacable ya que ha sido capaz de captar todos los guiños y adaptarlos a la cultura popular española, buscando referencias y expresiones que nos harán disfrutar la experiencia el doble.

Un libro con ritmo frenético que no vas a poder soltar desde que leas la primera página.

Mis cinco estrellas las he dado, porque como un Slasher literario es un 10, pero su novela predecesora: Mi ligue de la Ouija es superior en su trama, brillantes ideas, giros contundentes, y personajes.

De esta novela me quedo con la maravillosa Kelly Kennedy, el apellido tiene mucho que ver con lo que ella piensa de su bandera, me ha parecido un personaje patético, espeluznante y divertido.
Aunque parezca irrisorio es una fábula cruel de lo que significa la libertad real.
Es un Slasher no esperéis una gran trama, pero si brilla el humor negro, perturbado que caracteriza al autor y su originalidad, cumple con su cometido del entretenimiento salvaje..

Espero leer mejores cosas de Irons, en el trillado género del terror, es una aguja en un pajar, hablando de lo que está editado en castellano.
Que siga volándonos la cabeza con sus historias, no solo es un ingenioso amante de las emociones fuertes, también un gran escritor.

I really enjoyed Cockblocker!

It reads like a horror movie mixed with a teenage sitcom!

It’s a mix of Serial Mom, a teen hearing their dead mothers voice (like we’re hearing inside Jason’s head) and a nice touch of Nightmare on Elm Street too! It’s a slasher set down on paper.

Loved this!! As a fan of Saved By The Bell (not a fan like Kelly though!) this book was so much fun to read. Loved the kill scenes as well and "corn nuts"

COCKBLOCKER es una novela divertida. Cargada de litros y litros de sangre y aderezada con dosis tan altas de humor negro que en muchos momentos raya en lo cruel y enfermo.
Es tan políticamente incorrecto que definitivamente NO SE TRATA DE UN LIBRO PARA CUALQUIERA.

El libro nos abre sus puertas con una serie de escenas dignas de un maestro del SPLATTERPUNK, bastan menos de 20 páginas para darte cuenta de si deseas continuar leyendo o pasas de largo.

El personaje principal está maravillosamente creado y es tan diferente que no puede pasar desapercibido... Añadiendo el hecho de que le faltan bastantes tornillos en el engranaje😂

Mi calificación final no ha sido de cinco estrellas por un pequeño capricho: Me hubiera gustado un final diferente. De esas contadas ocasiones en que deseas que la locura y el terror se impongan ante toda adversidad y terminen saliéndose con la suya 🤭. Pero siendo honesto el cierre del libro es PERFECTO para una historia de tal magnitud.

esto es literatura de la de verdad y no ironicamente se lo recomendaria a todo el mundo si pudiera, aunque si quereis empezar a leéroslo: os aviso de que tiene escenas gráficas y bastante violentas, aparte de ser muy pero que muy gore en las mismas!!! sobretodo al final. así que si proseguís, hacedlo con cuidado

No sé qué acabo de leer. Bueno, sí, una crítica a la sociedad ultraconservadora estadounidense y a la homofobia en forma de slasher con humor negro. Creo. Pero estoy tan confusa que ni siquiera puedo estar segura.

All, I can say is....you had to be there!!!!
I was born in 1987. So I am a 90's kid through and through and as a 90's kid my earliest and fondest memories are
Tom Petty's Free falling on MTV and the radio, Wilson Phillips's Hold on on MTV and radio, Ace of Base's The sign and All that she wants on MTV and radio, and Sheryl Crow's All I wanna do on MTV and the radio. Looking at the time those songs all came out Free falling was 1989 to All I wanna do 1993. Ironically enough, this book takes place in 1993,lol. I remember seeing the music videos on MTV and being in my mom's car, my mom driving me around town and all those songs playing on the radio. I was only 6-7 years old in 1993.

Of course many other songs and movies, TV shows were part of my childhood;
Pearl Jam's, I don't even remember the song name. Never liked the song, despite the nostalgia. Meat loaf's I’d Do Anything for Love (but I Won’t Do That). Which my brother and I still jokingly sing every once in a while. Metallica's Enter the sandman. I'm still a big fan of and watch Quantum leap. I grew up in the children's ward of a hospital. I lived at the hospital for the first couple years of my life and of course what did I do most of the time, lying there in my hospital bed for months and months? Watch TV, I'd eat Corn flakes, sometimes Frosted flakes, and I remember those early 90's TV commerials. I also watched Clarissa explains it all, Hey dude, and Land of the Lost. I never actually liked Land of the lost. I found it pretty damn boring, just like Captain planet, I only watched it because it was the only thing on in that time slot,lol. I have a childhood photo of me in the hospital, my brother is lying on my bed in the background reading one of my books, and I remember when that photo was taken pretty well. Land of the lost was on, I was eating breakfast, was barely paying any attention to the show, because again, it was boring. Then my family walks in. On the wall behind my brother and I is a drawing I drew a day or so before and I remember that drawing. I was drawing, then I said to my self "just flow with it." just draw semi aimlessly because as a child I was fascinated by pareidolia. So I tried to draw a photo in that vein. Ya, from a very yound age I found my imagination and ability to see random stuff out of total randomness fascinating. I had a lot of fun looking at clouds, the leaves on trees, etc and seeing monsters; knowing I was creating them with the power of my mind.

I also have another childhood photo, I look to be about 2 or 3 years old. Probably taken in 1989 or 1990 and my mother is giving me a nebulizer treatment. I'm wearing late 80's clothing, for an infant of course and my mom is wearing 80's clothes and sitting on what looks like to be probably a 70's butterfly chair. The shirt I am wearing is probably a Sesame street shirt [from what I can tell. It's the blue monster with the long nose character] and my pants are maroon. Definitely an 80's vibe.

Movies I grew up with; Who framed Roger Rabbit? Terminator 2: Judgement day, The Rocketeer, Robocop 1 and 2, Predator, TIcks, Arachnophobia, Critters 1, 2, and 3, Gremlins 2, Hocus Pocus, Home alone 1 and 2, and of course all the 90's hit movies, kids movies, and 80's and 70's classic movies. Like Gremlins, The rescuers, Honey, we shrunk the kids, etc. I think the first R rated movie I ever watched was Terminator 2: Judgement day. Gremlins was also one of the very first movies I remember watching and while I was terrified of the movie at moments, I absolutely loved it. In fact, every single time my mom took me to the video store I'd see the VHS of Gremlins in the store and immediately ask "Can we rent Gremlins again?" I also remember at my favorite mom and pop local video store they had a cut out of Death becomes her on display. So when ever I watch Serial mom [one of my all time favorite movies] I not only feel a ton of nostalgia for the movie, the 90's look and feel to the entire movie, but the video store scene, which ironically enough also had that exact same Death becomes her cut out. Oh and Death becomes her is a great movie.

Of course as a 90's kid I was into Teenage mutant ninja turtles, Batman, Quantum leap, Married...*sign; my life. So depressing* with children, and Saved by the bell. One of my all time favorite shows was The facts of life, which I am still a big fan of. Never realized as a kid I was watching re-runs,lol. And all this, I am talking early 90's, middle 90's. Of course I was a fan of The X files, Daria, South park, and Unsolved mysteries.

Now to the actual book,lol. Lots and lots of 90's nostalgia. Even down to Bryan Adams. I always knew Bryan Adams from another early childhood film Robin Hood: Prince of thieves. I watched that movie a lot as a young child. The VHS tape always ended with the music video of Bryan Adams's [Everything I do] I do it for you. I always loved the song and the music video. Still do, although I still need to give the actual film a rewatch,lol. I keep telling my self that, but I would rewind and watch that music video over and over and over and over and over again in a row when I was a kid. This was back when I lived on Elm street with my cousin and his family.

So when the main character in this book; Kelly is driving to school and picking up her cheerleader friends and she's playing Bryan Adams on the car stereo - first off, nostalgia, and second I couldn't help but imagine it being either Summer of 69 or [Everything I do].

The book actually begins with a disturbing "origin story" childhood incident in the 80's. Then Kelly wakes up as a teenager instead of a child in 1993, puts in a VHS of Saved by the bell and our story really takes off with that awesome iconic Saved by the bell theme song.

As I said, of course i watched and was a fan of Saved by the bell in the 90's. I even watched the original Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which was a prequel to Saved by the bell and I couldn't help but laugh at a scene in this novel where Kelly's teacher reads out a paragraph from her report and we get two Saved by the bell references and I love how David Irons references the two most popular episodes. The "addicted to caffeine pills" episode and the "big oil kills the duck" episode. Too bad he didn't reference the episode No hope with dope. Which I still watch every now and then, just like I watch the Christmas episode where Zack gets a homeless girl for his Christmas present. I watch that episode for almost every Christmas. it's a good episode. I appreciate No hope with dope in an ironic "Fun stupid 80's/90's 'just say no' anti drug PSA" sense. The sort of icing on the cake, is the actual half assed PSA they do in the episode where they all go, one by one "Stupid" "Crazy" "Dangerous" "in one word would I use dope? Nope." In Screech's scene where he looks into the camera and says his like "Stinks" he's shoved inside a locker and what is on the locker door?! John Lennon smoking a joint!!!!

I would argue this book differs from David Iron's other novel Don't come to wheelchair camp, in many ways and I would argue for the better. From the start of the book we see it all through the killer's perspective. We see a really good glimpse into her life. Very much like a Christmas evil, Don't go in the house, Driller killer, and Silent night deadly night. The nonstop "Every single character needs to say a one liner." is kept to a minimum...and I don't know [well I do know to be honest] what this says about me and my fragile mental state but I could really relate to Kelly. My biggest childhood traumas were disappointment.

I always like to quote Christmas vacation
"It’s just that I know how you build things up in your mind, Sparky. You set standards that no family event can ever live up to."

And when my expectations, my "perfect" vision of exactly how everything should go; when the fantasy is broken I react EXACTLY as Clark Griswald reacts in that movie; fake extreme happiness and overly enthusiastic.

I've long had an issue with perfectionism. Although as I get older and older I am less obsessed about perfectionism and even when it is "perfect" in my eyes, I still can be unhappy. So what's the point? So I've learned to just go with the flow, prepare, try and be 2 steps ahead, but if it doesn't go exactly according to plan, if I don't get the joy and excitement and fulfillment despite it going to plan, that the anticipate was better then the actual thing happening - that's okay and I in fact at times kind of embrace it.

So I can totally relate to Kelly through out the book. "Not perfect!" everything has to go according to a script in my head and if it differs in any way, I have a mental break down. At least, that is how I use to be. Age and coping mechanisms, and therapy have helped.

All the characters are pretty damn good, some great dialog...although, again, David Iron in my opinion kind of overdoes it with some of the dialog.

The deaths are pretty good. The story is really good. I love the whole "Kelly is obsessed with Saved by the bell" theme through out the novel...and I got to say; why did Kelly go on a killing spree? Because reality didn't live up to her perfect PG TV sitcom life she imagined she lived in. In other words; it's the influence of all those family films.

Multiple times through out the book there was this subtext of "There is one big problem with Kelly though. Her unhealthy obsession with PG TV teen sitcoms." Which I love.

I also love the whole gay theme in the novel, and this goes into my issue with modern cinema and story telling. David Irons is obviously a fan of old school story telling, movies from the 80's. He understands that a movie or novel should be entertaining first and foremost.

So like for instance They live, or Quantum leap the story is full of political and social commentary, but the movie/TV show being a form of entertainment is the main focus. Using an entertaining story to get across issues. Nowadays, entertainment is NOT the focus, the story is nothing BUT the political/social commentary and that's it, but this problem with modern cinema and story telling goes beyond just "commentary first, entertainment second" and this is why I have looked down on "modern cinema" since the year 2000 and it's only gotten worse and worse.

To quote a documentary about 80's action films.

"They had a little more plotting, more twists, more plausiable villians, and nowadays I think people emulating ''oh, that's JUST THE STUNTS.' and NOT looking at the underlining material."

"Well, you know. I think the films of the 80's. I think they came from old school heads, who knew STORY ARC. THEY KNEW CHARACTER ARC and built on that they PUT ACTION THERE. THAT WAS ORGANICALLY MOTIVATED BY THE STORY. I think more today, the ACTION motivates the story. NOT the story motivates the action. The question is, do you care about anybody who was shot? That's the real question..."

For instance, a new slasher movie like X. Which takes place in 1979, and is about a porn movie cast being murdered by a slasher killer, which takes forever to actually happen. My question is "Is it like a 70's movie?! Instead of JUST taking place in the 70's? NO. Then f**k right off." In no way was the film like a 70's movie. it was PURE aesthetic, nothing more.

Also...there is a common sentiment among fans of 70's and 80's horror movies and movies in general which is "That movie would NEVER be made today." X is about a PORN cast, and it's a slasher movie....WHERE WAS THE SLEAZE?! X should of been a return to exploitation films from the 70's. Full of nudity and overall sleaze. Instead it was a boring as f**k slow, slow, slow burn generic as f**k, average modern as f**k movie. I watched the remake of Hellraiser [purely because I wanted to see what a female Pinhead would be like. I liked the idea.] and it was generic as f**k movie and that was when it hit me "No way would Hellraiser from 87 be made today." I mean, Hellraiser is a sleazy as f**k movie!!! And I love it. I came out of that remake going "PUT BDSM BACK INTO HELLRAISER!" That was my reaction.

Another recent slasher movie, Sick. That 100% felt like a 90's slasher movie. Even though it takes place in early 2020. Summer of 84, that felt pretty damn close to an 80's movie.

Overall, a pretty damn good novel. One of his best. I might like this more then Don't go to wheelchair camp and all his other novels I've read.

Igual que al ver pelìculas slasher o de terror de bajo presupuesto no esperas mucho, con esta novela la premisa es bastante directa y no te puedes esperar como que la novela del siglo...

pero que tampoco importò, ni fue realmente cool, slasher o de terror como tal. Me aburriò.

Es literal la historia de Harley Quinn, buscando venganze de su ex. Sin tintes feministas, ni algo importante pero sì con las alucinaciones en la cabeza. Y como mil "referencias" a salvados por la campana.

Y el ex no es el ex, sino un supuestamente heartstopper; pero que en realidad son 2 personajes "gay" completamente grises, sin personalidad y con diàlogos màs acartonados que todo. No vale para nada decir que la historia tambièn es lgbt, cuando eso no importò ni apartò nada. Màs que varias o muchas "ofensas" que podrìan ofender a varios si no entienden que el que habla es el personaje y no el autor.

Algunas escenas hubieran sido geniales en medio audiovisual, como una pelìcula de bajo presupuesto. Pero como novela realmente aburre: aburren los diàlogos, las escenas, los cortes y hasta los escenarios.

Y si vuelvo a leer/escuchar "¡tolòn, tolòn!" yo tambièn me voy a volver loco.
