The Scandal of White Complicity in US Hyper-incarceration: A Nonviolent Spirituality of White Resistance (Content and Context in Theological Ethics) by A. Mikulich
The Scandal of White Complicity and US Hyper-incarceration is a groundbreaking exploration of the moral role of white people in the disproportionate incarceration of African-Americans and Latinos in the United States.
This book doesn't have anywhere near as much material on the prison system as it applies to black males in the US as the title might lead on to suspect, but it has important insights at deeper levels that bring to light the underlying attitudes etc that lead to this situation. Attitudes to blacks are explored through looking at the history of lynching,Hip Hop culture (& its being co-opted by white culture) & myths of the demonic black man that justified slavery & then the Jim Crow Laws & lynching & then the current prison system. The last two chapters lead us into matters of spirituality to give us tools for responding to all this constructively with all this, ending with an exploration of the dark night of the soul as it applies to race issues. All of this is clearly written with great dignity and compassion for all people.
