After reading Black Beauty for the 1,497th time, Courtney McCaskill was inspired to write her own stories. Reviews of her early work were mixed, with her fourth-grade teacher, Ms. Compton, saying, “Please stop writing all of your assignments from the point of view of a horse.”

Today, Courtney lives in Austin, Texas with the hero of her own story, who holds the distinction of being the world’s most sarcastic pediatrician. She is reliably informed by her six-year-old son that she gives THE BEST hugs, “because you’re so squishy, Mommy.” When she’s not busy almost burning down her house attempting to make a traditional Christmas pudding, she enjoys playing the piano, learning everything there is to know about Kodiak bears, and of course, curling up with a great book! ✨”Are you truly one of London’s most notorious rakehells? Because you’re doing a remarkable impression of a lovesick schoolboy.”✨

This was incredibly sweet and fun!! Nothing groundbreaking, but I loved both MCs and had a great time. It was a novella, so I do think there was a little more room for the “she’s just my best friend’s little sister to I want to jump her bones and fall in love with her” pipeline to develop. I’m 50/50 with plots like these—because I often get annoyed at the characters spending most of their time with other characters—but this was the right amount of drama and shenanigans. There was even a cute secondary relationship!

Evander is a notorious rake who is in need of a wife. Failing to do that, his father will give the inheritance + the family company to his cousin. Letty is Evander's best friend's sister, and she's been in love with him for forever. He approaches her, because she is the one who can help him, but not with marriage... She is the perfect woman who can find a suitable wife for him. Well, in this story, nothing goes according to plan.

When he starts meeting all those young ladies, he starts missing Letty. All his attention is towards her and the women are just cast aside 😁. Letty has two potential candidates for her hand, but she is not sure which one to choose (because none of them are good) and she needs Evander's help. That so-called help from him, turns into spending time with him instead. That made her fall in love with him more, even though she knew he never loved her. All of those moments between them were the perfect chance for him to realize he loved her. And thank God he did it fast, because she was running out of time ♥️.

Although the book was quite short, the steamy moments were more than enough and very, very hot 🔥🔥🔥. I can definitely feel the steam coming out of the book pages. I loved their love scenes and they were perfect.

This story has it all. Humour, wit, and plenty of chemistry. I simply love an idiot to lovers story! Notice that is not plural for Letty has always known what she wants it simply takes Vander some time to catch up. His best friend’s little sister is clearly his best match as everyone else can see, and watching him bumble his way to realization was a pure delight. There were so many laugh out loud moments from an endearing side cast. I loved seeing the relationship between Vander and his mom, we rarely get to see that close-knit relationship. He clearly respects and adores her, and she proves just how well she knows her son. Letty is so stoic in her quest to find Vander exactly what he seeks, selflessly putting aside her feelings to make him happy. I truly felt her bravery in this sense, and thrilled at all the ways it drove him to distraction. There are so many moments in the story that I want to rave about, but I will hold back so as not to spoil. Simply said, this story was delightfully sexy and entertaining. I devoured it in one day, I just couldn’t put it down.

4.5 stars, rounds up to 5 stars.

One Fine May by Courtney McCaskill is the fifth novella in the multi-authored novella series, The Rake Review, releasing a new novella every month for all of 2024.

I have not read the previous novellas in the series that have already been released, but each novella can serve as a stand-alone. The central theme is that there is a gossip article written each month by the mysterious Brazen Belle, calling out the exploits of the society’s most notorious rakes. And at the start of this novella, she has a 100% success rate that an engagement has followed shortly after each of the four rakes she has written about thus far. Clearly the months included in the novella’s titles indicates the chronological order of the Brazen Belle’s articles, but you can really read these in any order.

I love Courtney’s books and best-friend’s-little-sister is one of my favorite tropes, which Courtney always writes really well (btw give Scoundrel for Sale by her a read if you want more of this trope, it’s my favorite of hers) so I’ve been looking forward to reading this one since I read the synopsis.

I was disinclined to like Vander right at the opening when we read the laundry list of his rakish deeds, but we see his true personality peeking through bit by bit, plus he’s actually quite funny, and he quickly started winning me over. Letty is fun and sweet and despite being in love with Vander from a distance for most of her life, she is never pathetic about it. I really respected her character and thought they were a great pairing.

The one thing that bothered me was how much Letty as a potential bride never even crossed his mind, even when suggested to him. Like come on Vander, I thought you were supposed to be smart? Which is why I so loved when Mrs. Barnet called him out when finally sees sense.

My favorite thing about this novella is that there are no misunderstandings that lead to a big conflict between our two main characters and that there are no villains. It’s a great cast of characters that are all supportive and fun to be around. I love some drama and tension in a story, but it was so refreshing to read one without. The story flows and unfolds and that realization only came to me when reflecting back on my read to write this review.

Give this one a read if you enjoy Courtney's rom-com writing style or love this trope.

I just love reading Courtney McCaskill books, they are like a comforting warm hug! She writes books full of the perfect amount of humour, steam, lovable characters and romantic moments.

I loved the Hero, Evander( Vander) Beauclerk, a rake who is forced to marry by his father. He enlists the help of his best friends little sister, Lady Leticia Daughtrey (Letty) to find him the perfect bride for him. Little did Vander know that Letty has loved him since she was ten years old.

It was entertaining to read the main characters interact with their suitors, while fighting their attraction to each other. Vander did not think he was good enough due to his rakish past and did not want to jeopardise his relationship with Letty's brother, David. However if he only knew that Letty loved him exactly as he was and he was good enough for her. She loved that he was a slightly reformed rake!

If you love a steamy forbidden romance, working class, mixed race Hero, childhood infactuation/ friends to lovers, brother's best friend, then I cannot recommend this enough, loved it!.

I received an arc from the author and this review has been submitted voluntarily and opinion is my own.

Read this a few weeks ago and forgot to review it so now I forgot everything about it. I've read the blurb to see if it rang any bells and the only thing I remembered was that I didn't like how silly and vapid the hero was. I need some substance in my men and women.

New month, new Rake Review! The third book in the collection released on the first, One Fine May by Courtney McCaskill and I have to say that this series continues to be one of my monthly reading highlights!  I mean, when do I not love a Courtney McCaskill book?!?!

Another Rake has been slandered in the notorious Rake Review, and this time his folks are not willing to wait out the scandal. He is being forced to repair his disastrous reputation ASAP- and the only way to redeem a rake is through marriage! Now, Mr. Evander Beauclerk must find a wife by the end of the month, or his father will pass the family company and fortune to his cousin!

Not willing to accept this ultimatum, Vander proceeds to take his mother’s advice and seek out his best friends sister… but not as a wife! He asks her to use her knowledge of the ladies of the season to assist him find a suitable wife- until he can find another solution to this problem!

Lady Leticia Daughtry has loved Vander since she was a girl and would do anything for him… even if it’s to break her heart and find him a wife!

Oh my! I loved the banter and connection Vander have. He is absolutely clueless and determined to not despoil his buddy’s sister… but how can he not help her, when she’s doing so much for him??? I mean one kiss never hurt anyone…

This pairing was absolutely delightful! I was rooting for them from the time Vander bumbles his request for assistance. Both characters are looking for a partner (Leticia has two proposals she must decide from) and the perfect match is right there in front of them!

Fans of matchmaker, friends to lovers or BF’s sibling will love this story!

One Fine May by Courtney McCaskill is available now! Thanks to the author for my arc review copy. Opinions are my own.

This was an easy read for a chilly spring day. Evander And Lettie and really quite adorable together. Lettie was really a good. MFC, she has been in love with her bothers best friend but he seems to only see her as a friend rather than the woman she wants to be seen as. I liked that she at no point seemed pathetic, she was honest about what she wanted but also she wasn't going to embarrass herself. Vander was rougish and jealous when he realized he wanted Lettie he plays dirty and I'm not mad at it. I have never read any of this authors books before but I need to add them to my TBR. This was an ACR I read in exchange for my honest review.

If I have to stop reading to go immediately sign up for an author’s newsletter, then you can bet the book is a banger. Courtney McCaskill is so funny guys. There are so many passages I snorted over (lovely, I know) and highlighted because I just found them hilarious. When the rake falls hard for the woman he least expects I am sold. This is, of course, exactly what happens to Vander, who has been written up by the Brazen Belle for leaving one too many ladies (eight!) in the lurch. Given an ultimatum by his father, Vander must marry or lose his family’s shipping insurance company. Pretty much everyone EXCEPT him, sees that his best friend’s little sister Letty is the perfect match for him. Instead, Zander seeks out Kerry for help finding the type of wife a rake needs.
Priorities:
-a beautiful woman
-an intelligent woman
-a woman that must possess a high tolerance for innuendo, aka “sophisticated”

At each and every turn, Letty outmatches each woman she has chosen for Vander, but will he see what’s right in front of him? The escapades Vander and Letty go on are so funny, and the mismatches between Letty and her suitors and Vander and his possible brides had me smiling like a fool. Not only is the book funny, but hot too! Two words for you: Vauxhall swing. The Virgin and the Rake™️ is not a new trope, but it works so well with McCaskill’s writing. Just go ahead and pick this book up already! I received an early copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

He wanted Letty to think about him as much as he'd been thinking about her the past few days. He wanted her to long for his company in the same way he longed for hers. And he wanted all of her--every smile, every whispered jest, every second of her time. Not just her body.

4.75 stars!

This was another outstanding edition to the Rake Review series! Letty has loved Vander for more than half of her life, but Vander has never seen her as anything but his best friend's younger sister. When Vander comes to Letty for help finding a proper bride, Letty is absolutely devastated that her dreams of happiness with Vander will never come to fruition. Vander was a bit of a clueless dunderhead at times, but I loved seeing his confused obsession with Letty once he pulled his head out of his arse (with the help of pretty much everyone else).

My heart broke for Letty each time she is forced to admit that Vander did not return her affections; she was so kind and deserved happiness more than anyone else. I cheered every time Vander let go of his reservations for marrying Letty and allowed himself to bask in her adoration; his grovel was so sweet and definitely made up for his obliviousness in the end. This is definitely one of my favorites of the series so far, and I look forward to more🖤

Tropes: brother's best friend, childhood friends-to-lovers, rakehell hero, girl-next-door heroine, 'it's always been you', she falls first/he falls harder, lessons in seduction, unrequited love, 'you deserve better than me' vibes, slow burn, STEAMY🔥

Evander Beauclerk’s father issues an ultimatum to his son after Vander is featured in the ‘Rake review’, give up his dissolute ways and marry a respectable woman by the end of the month, or the family fortune will go to his cousin Milton. Vander knows only one respectable woman, and that’s his best friend David’s little sister, Lady Leticia Daughtrey. Desperate, he asks Letty to help him find a suitable bride. For one heart breaking moment, Letty thought Vander was asking her to marry him. The notion isn’t so far-fetched after two men issued competing proposals in the middle of a crowded ballroom, the bachelors of London have developed a newfound appreciation for the girl they’d always taken for granted. Now, not only does Letty have to figure out which of her own suitors to marry, she’s tasked with finding a bride for the man she’s pined after for years.
This was an absolute delight, the well known rake asking his best friend’s little sister to help him find a wife only to find no one else compares to her then he becomes jealous of her suitors. I loved both Vander & Letty, he’s intelligent & realises he actually likes using his brain plus working with his father brought them closer together too. Letty always put a brave cheerful face on & she truly deserved to win the man she loved. I loved the chemistry between Vander & Letty & thoroughly enjoyed their journey to a HEA, which I read in a sitting. There was witty banter & strong characters in this well written romance

It was my first time reading Courtney McCaskill and I can say that I really enjoyed her writing. It was fun and joyful and it just made me smile all the time. This was the perfect read to survive the wait before Bridgerton season 3 because you get all the Polin vibes in this book.

I always say I hate friends to lovers, but I realize it is a blatant lie, I do love it, I'm probably just more difficult with it. Luckily this book was simply amazing and it made me love the trope. You don't get the big tension from enemies, but instead you get amazing chemistry and it is so adorable. Plus the whole best friend's little sister is definitely a favourite of mine and it was well done.

The growing relationship between our main characters was so nice and I loved how they trusted each other. Letty was refreshing, even though quite innocent, she still had great banter and didn't lack curiosity. She was so freakin' sweet, helping Vander even though it was breaking her heart. She never was pathetic about her unrequited love, she was truly putting all her feelings aside and helping a friend so that he'd be happy. Letty so deserved her HEA. As for Vander, he was quite easy to like, a true rake that you can't help falling for. I have to admit that more than once I did agree with his mother: he was truly so stupid at times. But still, you can't help but love him. As our MCs grew closer together Vander was always nice, sweet and attentive with Letty, I really enjoyed that.

All characters were truly endearing, from friends to siblings and all. The cultural representation was great too, I so loved Vander's mom and the beautiful relationship they had. In the end, the fact that both families were rooting for our two MCs to get together made me so happy. All in all, this was a pretty entertaining read with a lot of sweetness to it.

Thanks to the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

One Fine May indeed.

Another great story from Courtney..

This has a great happily ever after, humor, great amount of steam and so much more.

Vander is known as the most notorious rake of London however since appearing in a newspaper article he has been given an ultimatum by his father either marry a respectable woman and start being a respectful person by the end of 31 days or be cut out of the family business forever.

Letty is known as the shy meek sweetheart of the ton, her mother has given her until the end of season to pick a suitor of her own or her mother will do it for her so she sets out with two, one is an older gentleman who is quiet and stiff while the other one is younger talks too much self centered and embarrassing. But she will never love anyone else like she does her brother's best friend

Vander needs her help with finding a respectable wife that's attractive, intelligent and interested in the same things he is but what he doesn't know is that she fits all of those things until he starts meeting all of these other women and starts seeing her as much more than his best friend's sister.

I received this as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for a voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no one else.

Another very light and most modern-ish feeling story so far.

It wasn't as much as the language used, as the interactions between the main couple.

Yes, they had chemistry together - the ‘childhood friends’ trope really worked here - but the way they behaved made me think they were characters in a contemporary YA novel.

Of course, some of the scenes when they clearly risked being caught in a scandal could be chalked up to them being young and reckless, but still.

That being said, I *loved* the swing scene. 10/10. No notes.

One Fine May was a cute and romantic story; the late spring setting made it even more light and almost whimsical, matching the quickly budding romance between Letty and Vander.

One Fine May is my favorite in The Rake Review series so far. I just love reading about reformed rakes! Courtney McCaskill has written a story about a rake who needs to marry or loose his inheritance. Hopefully with his best friends sister's help finding him a wife he will be able to find someone. It's a road of discovery for both Letty and Vanders as they find their happy ever after, with enjoyable characters, sensual passion, humorous situations and witty banter will keep you turning the pages.

Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. I couldn't put this down. Vander and Letty were multidimensional, sympathetic, and compelling characters. Dialogue was realistic and amusing. I truly got wrapped up in their drama and was rooting for Vander, in particular, to pull his head out of his @$$. In fact, when he eventually did, he used those words. Letty didn’t need any prodding since she’d been in love with him since the age of ten, so it was difficult to see her trying to match Vander with someone he could marry when she wanted to be that person.

Vander and Letty had some great rapport, helped by the fact that David (Letty’s older brother) is best friends with Vander. Though you might think that would mean David would be happy about Letty and Vander marrying, Vander is convinced he risks losing his best friend. Silly as this may sound, it was a real fear.

The trouble begins when Vander’s father tells him he must marry by month’s end. His mother suggests asking Letty and Vander assumes that means asking her to help him find a bride. When she realizes what he’s asking, she’s heartbroken. When his mother finds out what he’s done, she says, “How is this possible? I married your father, the mathematical genius, specifically so I would not find myself with a child who is as dumb as a donkey!"

Letty, being selfless and wanting Vander to be happy even if it causes her immense pain, introduces him to several women. While spending time with one of them, Vander is so bored, “Vander wondered if it was physically possible to knock himself insensible with a pall-mall mallet in such a way that would make it look like an accident. He would be the laughingstock of London if he pulled it off. But it might be worth it…”

Meanwhile, Letty is on a tight deadline to choose between the two men who already proposed to her. When Vander wants to discuss this with her, ostensibly to help, “Letty glanced to the side, wondering how badly she would injure herself were she to leap from the moving carriage in an attempt to escape this conversation. Probably quite badly. They were a good six feet off the ground."

I love Vander’s internal dialogue, the voice that kept calling him out in his b.s. While asking Letty about her suitors and whether either has kissed her, he found himself growling good in his head when she admits she hasn't had the opportunity to kiss the younger one. When she admits she did kiss the older one, he thinks what the hell? And when he continues to ponder why she's even considering these two men, he reminds himself, "Because those are the choices she has. We've been through this, Vander. Try to keep up." He decides he most show her what a good kiss should feel like, so he pulls her to a secluded spot “to help her. As a friend." "That irritating voice inside his head says, Horse sh—"

I’m glad to have discovered this author. This is the first book I’ve read from her, but if all are written in this style, call me a fan. I wholeheartedly recommend this one.

What a lovely read! This was my first book authored by McCaskill, and I am just pleased as punch to cross this off my TBR.

Vander is a trashy little man(hoe) who has been running from his responsibilities for thirty-some years, naming learning the family business. When his wealthy and successful shipping (as in a sailing vessel, not UPS) insurance business-owning father tells him to buck up, stop his wild ways, and marry within a month, Vander is none too pleased. If he doesn't do as his father says, he also won't inherit the family business.

Enter stage right, Letty. Letty is the younger sister of Vander's best pal, David. Letty has been holding the torch for Vander for thirteen years. However, Vander has never seemed to notice that Letty grew up AND is utterly perfect for him, although everyone else in his life seems to know. Men, I tell you. Vander decides to ask Letty to introduce him to women he might consider for marriage, even if he doesn't like the idea one bit. Naturally, Letty wishes it was her who Vander would wish to marry, but she simply can't come out and say it.

Vander... I love him. I shouldn't, not because he is rude or mean, but because he is too dense to realize what an absolute catch Letty is from the get-go. Vander is such a rake and a total charmer. Needless to say, it's easy to see why women fawn after him.

McCaskill has such excellent writing that allows us into Vander's inner thoughts as he comes to realize that he has to know his future wife for a good long while. It's easy to understand how Vander would fall for Letty. Letty is clever, intelligent, and is sharp-witted. Essentially, everything Vander wants in a wife but is too blind to notice she is the one. They make for a passionate pair once Vander gets his head out of the clouds.

As for steam, McCaskill uses both explicit and alluded-to terms. I found my jaw dropping at some points as McCaskill can sure craft a piping-hot steam scene. Vander is extremely invested at, ahem, delivering.

The Brazen Belle is at it again! This month her target is the notorious, Rake about town, only son of a wealthy businessman, Evander Beauclerk. So what's the problem? I mean, she's not wrong...Life should be enjoyed to its fullest and with ass-ets like his, it would be a shame to keep them to himself! It's not his fault the ladies he's left behind expected more of him. He makes no promises to them, society, his father or even himself. There's plenty of time to settle down and if he plays his cards right, maybe he'll never have to...

Unfortunately, Vanders father does not agree. Shamed and fed up with his behavior, he gives Vander an ultimatum: Marry a respectable woman within 30 days or be cut off and the business he's to inherit will be handed to his cousin instead. Respectable? The only respectable woman he knows is his best friend's little sister, Letty. Not to marry her of course (that's just not possible. Her brother would never approve. He KNOWS things! They've DONE things in the presence of each other!) no, not marry, but to enlist her help in finding him a wife his father will approve of. That's all he needed from her. Isn't it?

Help him find a wife? Help her first and only love marry another woman? She could do this. Letty has always known she could never be his. He's only ever thought of her as a little girl, and with his looks and charm he could have anyone. Someone more beautiful, more exciting, more everything than her. Thankfully, she's not completely without prospects. In fact, she has a decision to make within days. Two men have proposed which is more than she or her family expected, but how does she choose? She knows she wants some hope of passion in her marriage. But how can she put these men to the test if she doesn't even know how to kiss properly!? Good thing she has a Rake to teach her...

I absolutely adored this book! From start to finish it's pure gold! Courtney's writing is magical. It's perfectly written, perfectly balanced with humor, joy, passion and love. The characters come alive with expert level banter and flow of conversation. Not only do we fall in love with the MC's but the side characters are just as lovable. The research Courtney has put into this is obvious and helps create a world that we can visualize effortlessly. The transformation of both Vander and Letty was brilliantly portrayed and completely believable. The tension and chemistry between them had me sighing and fanning myself. This is definitely open door with multiple meaningful and sensual scenes. I will never look at a wooden swing the same again!

Enjoy, readers! I wish I could read this for the first time again! Be sure to free up your day because you won't want to put it down!

I was honored to receive an early copy directly from the author (Thank You!) All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book has an interesting plot – a woman has pined after a man since she was a child. He sees her as that child and isn’t interested in her as a woman. She must choose to marry one of two admirers, and he is being forced to marry or surrender the fortune he is heir to. He’s a notorious rake. She’s an intelligent woman whom he asks to help find him a bride. It has a lot of potential. The plot is well written. But the characters don’t seem to jell.

The hero, Vander, is the rake who must now become a husband. As his mother assesses the situation, he is “dumb as a donkey” regarding Letty. The heroine, Letty, has two proposals of marriage and must choose between them soon. Vander doesn’t seem to care whom he marries, just not Letty because she is his best friend’s sister. He doesn’t even consider her. Letty has crushed on Vander from afar since her childhood. That she’s asked to introduce him to prospective brides is a cruelty joke.

With an interesting plot, this should be an interesting story. But…the characters are flat. They don’t have much excitement for one another beyond sex (not a spoiler – this is advertised as a steamy Regency romance). I get the steam, but little else. Do they even like each other? They don’t act like it. There’s no passion and the sex feels expected. “Kiss” is used 84 times in the book. There is little feeling or love in the kissing. It’s something that needs to be done to help Letty’s tutelage in the subject, and it feels predictable. Even when we’re told in chapter 13 that Letty thought “Vander’s kiss was molten,” it doesn’t feel that way. After that kiss, both were sexually provoked, but not headed towards love.

In the end, there’s an HEA, but it felt expected—as did the sex—rather than being happily anticipated. The story is not bad. Every book doesn’t have to be a grand passion…but…I would have liked to see Vander gradually develop feelings for Letty or at least explore the feelings he surely must have had (or that I wanted him to have). There’s no build up. Vander is going about his life, looking for a bride, until the end when a miracle of understanding occurs…then the HEA.

There are some trouble spots in the book:
 “…offered him a sliver of plausible deniability.” The term, plausible deniability, originated in 1948 within Harry Truman’s National Security Council paper. This story takes place in 1820, far too early for this concept. The speaker, Evander Beauclerk, would not have known the term. It even sounds too modern.
 In chapter 13, at a ball, Letty is lead out into a garden to be kissed by Vander. We’re told she wanted to run her hands through his hair, so “she grazed his scalp with her nails.” I don’t think so. it’s 1820 Regency era, and women always wore gloves. Chapter 11 had her wearing gloves and being kissed on the back of one of them – she would have been wearing gloves at the ball.
 In chapter 15, we’re told that David, Vander’s friend and Letty’s brother, tells Vander, “Quit bamming me.” This is predominately British slang, from the Scottish word (bam) meaning to trick or hoax. However, it originated in the late 19th or early 20th century. This is 1820, too early for the term.
 David says to Vander, “Color me intrigued.” We know what this means, but David and Vander wouldn’t. The “color me…” phrase came into use in the mid-20th century, well after the Regency period.
 I initially questioned the use of a Woodhouse actuarial table (“Woodhousian Method of Graduation”) being used in 1820, but the writer corrects herself in her “Historical Note” section at the end of the book. I liked her notes - interesting!

I rated this book 3-stars. It is well written, but the characters didn’t move me. Vander was too much a rake and dumb as a post regarding Letty. I like heroes with more awareness. Letty was too much a doormat for Vander – when “he smiled lazily as he crossed the gallery,” Letty thought she’d “melt into a puddle upon the floor.” That pretty much sums up their relationship. He struts. She melts. With all the repetition, the story got old. It’s the solid writing that saves it. I’ll definitely read another book in this series. Ms. McCaskill writes in a style that is enjoyable to read.

One Fine May by Courtney McCaskill was an unexpected treat of a read! I don't think I have read any of her other books but was eager to read the 5th book in The Rake Review Series. I discovered that I really enjoy Courtney McCaskill's wit and humor as well as the way she writes her characters.
Evander Beauclerk has been called out in the Rake Review and while he is a bit proud, he is also embarrassed by some of the claims made in the column. However, he is entirely unprepared for the repercussions it immediately causes with his father. His father is the owner of Beauclerk Marine Casualty Insurance and the callout on Evander's behavior may create negative backlash. Conditions are on the table prompting Vander to seek his mother's advice. She tells him to ask his best friend's sister in response to one of his father's commands and, he does just that!
This brother’s best friend/ friends to lovers books is one of the most entertaining I have read. It is an amusing combination of misunderstandings and steamy chemistry rolled into a story filled with sweet encounters, jealous moments and the discovery, the one you want wants you too!
Lettie, Vander best friend David's little sister was written so cleverly. She grew up with David and Vander watching and hoping. We knew the secret heartbreak she carries, but she was charming, engaging and dedicated in her efforts to help Vander fulfill his father's wishes.
Vander, a blockhead in many ways, struts about as sophisticated rake but he finds his life is changing and what he used to enjoy is now hollow. This book is one of the best in that it explores the impact on male friendship if one is interested in the other's sister. It is my favorite trope but have never seen the MMC worry it out in his mind! His mind fights his heart until he comes to terms that he can fulfill his father's conditions and be happy with who he is and the life he will lead. He doesn't go easily but is sure is fun to read his thoughts and enjoy his tumble into love!
I wholeheartedly recommend One Fine May (The Rake Review #5)! It's a perfect pick me up story that will lift your mood and touch your heart.
I received an Advance Readers Copy and I am leaving my voluntary review based on my reading experience.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

I think this is my first time reading this author, despite having a number of her previously published works in my TBR pile, and thanks to this book, her previous works may be moving up the list.

Evander Beauclerk has just been outed by the Belle in the latest Rake Review and it was the last straw for his father, a conservative hard working owner of a marine insurance business. Mr. Beauclerk lays down the law to Vander, telling him to shape up, start to learn about the business, and settle down, and if he does not marry a decent woman by the end of the month, he is being shipped out... of his income and dad's marine insurance business (see what I did there - haha - snort).

Vander, despite his reputation as a pleasure-seeking rake, is really quite a mathematical genius, but would rather put his skills to trying to figure out another way to earn and income, such as gambling, rather than knuckle under to his father. But until he can ensure a decent income, he will make some appearance of compliance, including going into the office at times, and seeking out the help of his best friend's socially adroit and respectable sister, Lady Leticia. Letty has secretly loved Vander from afar for years, but her hopes of him noticing her have always been low, and further quashed when he seeks her aid to find an acceptable bride. She is also in a spousal conundrum herself, and must choose between two suitor herself before her self-set deadline, since Vander has not interest in considering her as a suitable bride.

This is a secret love, friends to lover story that was fun, with a bright, joyful dialogue, and funny scenarios, and managed to make insurance something that was fun and interesting (and trust me - in my mind, insurance is NOT fun and interesting). I also loved the fact that Vander is mixed race and the child of an immigrant as well - a fact that made his father seem more interesting and I would actually love to know his parents love story as well. I enjoyed all the smaller relationships in this story as well, including between Vander and his parents, and his cousin, and his friendship with Leticia's brother.

A lovely addition to the series...

The Brazen Belle has found this month's victim! The dashing and thoroughly rakish Mr Evander Beauclerk, son of Cedric and Azita Beauclerk. Now with the article printed, he has been summoned to his father's study. Cedric announces that there has been a decline sing the article and Vander has to marry with in the month or he will disinheirated! Worse yet the business will go to his cousin Milton.

So what's a rake to do but ask for help from the only female he knows that has access to debutante and other comida tea he would be compatible with. That would be his long time friend and former cruising buddy, Davis's sister, Lady Leticia Daughtry or Letty, as she is effectionantly called.

Letty introduces him to three women she believes will not stifle Vander, but mesh with his personality. First he asks for beauty, that didn't work. Then he ask for beauty and intelligence, that didn't work either. The he asks for beauty, intelligence, and humor, which gave him a sound piece of advise. She wad not looking to marry a second rake, but he should go after what his heart is trying to tell his head.

Letty has been infatuated with Vander since she was thirteen, but having a sound mind knows nothing will come from it. Vander is her brother's friend and that code should not be broken, so she loves him from afar. The only one who knows about her crush is her best friend Emily, who happens to be engaged with her brother David. So when Vander asks for her help she is disheartened. Letty also has to choose between two proposals, her mother is graciously giving her a month to decide.

So come find out is Vander gives up his debauched rakish ways to settle down or finds a differ way to support himself. Does he marry any of the three or another? Which suitor does Letty choose? Is a third prospect given?

Join the activities to meet the women for Vander as Letty puts her suitor to the test! From the ballrooms, to garden parties to the museum and a night at Vauxhall. Engage in lighthearted banter and mischief behavior. Cedric even makes a joke, which is shockingly good!

DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One Fine May might just be my favorite story, and Evander Beauclerk, my favorite hero of 2024.

Courtney McCaskill is a new-to-me author and I am adding her books to my TBR because this book was just so good!! I loved Evander and Leticia (aka Vander and Letty)! I especially loved the growth Evander’s character went through in this book! I loved watch him fall for Letty, and he fell hard! I also really loved the scene with his cousin Milton! I will admit, when Courtney introduced Milton in the beginning of the story, the way he was described made me think of Milton from Office Space, but I really loved what Courtney did with his character and how he bonded with Evander (who knows, maybe if Milton from Office Space had someone to bond with like Evander, he wouldn’t have done what he did! LOL) There’s a scene with Evander and his mom, and I was absolutely dying laughing because of it! I loved Evander’s relationship with his dad, and how it progressed throughout the story.

I loved Leticia! She was such strong character! I loved how she tried to help Evander out, even when her own heart was breaking! I loved when she got up the nerve to ask for what she wanted from Evander.

Overall this was a well-rounded sweet yet steamy (hello swing scene!) and funny story! If you like regency romance, especially with a little steam, you need to check this book out! This book is fifth in the series, but you can read it as a standalone as there are no overlapping characters or storylines (aside from a different rake getting raked over the coals in each story for being a bad boy lol.)

Thanks Courtney, and the rest of the Brazen Belles, for the advance copy! I can’t wait to read more of your stories!

One Fine May is the fifth instalment in the multi author series The Rake Review.
Evander Beauclerk is a happy go lucky rake about town with no worries in his life. Until his escapades get featured in the popular Rake Review article. Now his father has put his foot down. Either Vander settles down with a respectable wife by the end of the month or he will leave his fortune and business to his cousin. But where to start looking? Vander decides to ask his best friends little sister to help him. Letty is the epitome of respectability. But the more suitable ladies Vander is introduced to, the more he realises that Letty might be the perfect lady for him. If only he was worthy of her.
Lady Leticia Daughtry has been in love with Vander for years but he has never seen her as anything more than his best friend’s sister. For one glorious moment she thought her dreams had come true but she swallows her disappointment and determines to help him find the perfect bride. Letty has her own troubles as she must make a choice between two suitors herself even if her heart is not in it. Maybe Vander can help her as she is helping him.
This is another lighthearted, low angst addition to the series. Letty is a sweet heroine and Vander has great character growth. He starts as an indolent rake who suppresses his talent for numbers but realises that he is tiring of his lifestyle and work actually gives him purpose. It was nice to see him working with his father and making improvements to their insurance business.
Vander was a bit clueless at first despite the fairly obvious nudging of his mother and David. Once he realises his feelings for Letty he tries to change despite his reservations about what it will do to his relationship with his best friend.
I received an advanced review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Vander and Letty are very likeable and I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.

This review may contain spoilers!

Weaved perfectly, it’s funny, spicy, with loveable, relatable and interesting characters.

The main characters have a chemistry to die for, despite Vander’s obliviousness to whom should be his chosen bride and everyone’s obvious suggestions.

Lettie was such a sport, poor woman, helping the one she loves to find a bride that isn’t her. Their friendship, Lettie’s secret love and Vander’s obvious reluctance to marry anyone, especially not his friend’s sister, are the main focus of this hilarious plot, where even the secondary characters serve as comic relief.

From endearing, supportive parents, that try to steer their children into happiness and bliss, to a very mature brother and sister-in-law, to respective suitors to Vander and Lettie, everything is perfect.

I was a mix of suppressing laughter and rolling my eyes, every time Bertie Strickleton started rambling, Beatrice Barnet was an absolute queen.

Plus, what is better than a man proposing to teach a woman in the arts of seduction and making love? When it’s the woman initiative and disposition to do so, despite the obvious damages to her reputation.

It was a bold, very risky move, and entirely top-notch.

That man went bonkers for her, head over heels, worshipping the world she is in. No one could ever compare to her. He was done from the get-go; he just didn’t realize it.

The proposal was very well thought, considering the kind of rake he was. That showed his growth as a man and his commitment to her and their life together.

So, overall, is an entertaining, funny, story about friends becoming lovers, in midst of hidden feelings and desires, suitors and hidden moments of lust.

I think the author for allowing me to read this ARC. This is my honest, voluntary review.

A really enjoyable read! It was very humorous, I had some great chuckles while reading it. The main characters, Evander (Vander) and Leticia (Letty) have known each other for years as Vander is the best friend of Letty’s older brother David.
Vander was the main feature in the May edition of “The Brazen Belle”; a gossip column that is read by most of the ton. The article tells the ton of the scandalous liaisons Vander has had in the last few months. Vander’s father is not amused and tells Vander he must find a suitable young woman to marry and take interest in his family business that has made them rich enough for the ton to accept them into society. Vander doesn’t want to work for the family business, he wants to be a professional gambler as he has a very mathematical mind and doesn’t know how to meet suitable women so decides to ask for help from Letty. Letty comes from a titled family who knows many suitable women. The only problem is that Letty has been in love with Vander for years and wishes she was the woman he wanted to marry. She has had two proposals herself from men who aren’t Vander and she has to decide which one is the better of two vastly unsuitable men.
Letty tries to introduce Vander to women she thinks he will like but Vander doesn’t seem to be interested in any of them. As they spend time together, Vander starts to realise that Letty isn’t David’s “little sister” anymore.
The growing chemistry between Letty and Vander was such fun to read. There’s some great steamy scenes, especially one scene with a garden swing. There’s lovely secondary characters that really enhance the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good laugh at a story about the best friend’s younger sister trope. It is definitely on my reread list.
I received a special copy from the author. I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

One Fine May, the 5th book in The Rake Review series, is a charming, well-written novella by Brazen Belle author Courtney McCaskill. It revolves around the budding relationship between Lady Leticia Daughtry, daughter of an earl, and her older brother's best friend, Evander "Vander" Beauclerk, for whom she has held a torch since she was 10 years old. Exposed as a notorious rakehell by The Brazen Belle in the gossip column of the newspaper, Vander is given an ultimatum by his father to settle down and marry by the end of the month, or he will disinherit him, passing the family shipping insurance company to Vander's somewhat inept cousin, Milton, instead. Thinking that Letty would be the perfect young woman to help him find a respectable woman to marry, Vander asks for her assistance in the search, never before realizing that his perfect match has been there under his nose all along.

I really enjoyed this love story; it's short, but sweet and packed with plot. Both Letty and Vander are very likable characters, whose happy ending is easy to root for. What I liked best about this novella was how well Vander and Letty fit together as a couple; having known each other for years, they were friends first because of Vander's very close friendship with Letty's brother, David. But I also loved that Vander was mixed race, his mother being from India and his father, England; how Vander interacts with his family was really well done (in my opinion) and very endearing, especially as his relationship with his father grows deeper. I also appreciated the author's attention to small details that were presented early on in the story and which resurfaced, becoming important later on - like Vander getting an almost verbatim do-over (which was delightful!), the flowers being Letty's favorite color and the significance of the purple sapphire Vander chooses for Letty. Even his cousin isn't forgotten and gets his own happy ending too!

All in all, a really enjoyable, clever read that is a great addition to this series by the Brazen Belles authors.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions and thoughts expressed herein are my own.

The Rake Review has returned! And the rake for the month of May is none other than Evander Beauclerk, son of a wealthy insurance businessman. But when Evander's name appears in the Rake Review is father lays down an ultimatum: settle down and marry as well as begin to learn the business or it will be based down (along with his father's significant fortune) to a cousin. So Vander turns to his best friend's little sister to help him find a suitable bride, one Lady Leticia 'Lettie' Daughtrey. Who just so happens has been pining for Vander for years...

There were some hilarious quotes that I loved in this novel. I felt like I highlighted a lot of it. Courtney McCaskill's writing is refreshing and the banter between her characters is hilarious. I really appreciated that once Vander realized he was falling for Letty, after making the sweet lady believe he was proposing to her at the outset, only to be actually asking her to find him a suitable bride, that he was extremely worried about how being with Letty would effect his friendship with her older brother David. In other HRs I find that the best friend is not as focused on the fact that such an action could truly effect their relationship and I appreciate how much Vander worried over it. I adored the cultural representation with Vander's mother being from India and how they spoke Persian in the novel. I also loved hearing how his parent's met. Oh sweet Letty, I loved how she continued on helping Vander although doing so was breaking her heart. And I adored that when she finally got her chance with him she was the one to make the next/big moves to invite him/drag him into her bedroom as well as supply the protection for their encounter. And in the end I loved how Vander went about getting Letty by recreating a previous encounter in the book! It gave me all the happy heart flutters!

Thank you to the author for an eARC of the novel in exchange for an honest review!

Lady Leticia, Letty to her friends is the sister to David whose best friend is Evander, known as Vander. Letty had been in love with him since she was ten, following them around whenever she could. She used to be able to at least see him as he was always with David. Till her brother fee in love with her best friend, Emily. Now David spends all his time with her. So, she is shocked when he takes her aside and asks her to marry him! Till he explains his father has given him to the end of the month to find a wife or lose everything and he needs her to help him find one. Her heart is broken but she cannot deny him anything. At twenty-three she has been to many social events and always is the nice one. Which means she will sit next to all the people no one else wants to and be nice. The has two suitors ask for her hand and has only a matter of weeks to decide between them. All is lost now that Vander will marry finally, and her dreams will never come true. Vanders mother is wonderful, and I could just see her throwing up her hands and ready to smack him when he doesn’t see what is right in front of him. It is one of the most wonderful, funny parts of the story. Little does Vander know what is in store for him. As Letty finds Ladys for him to spend time with, he finds out how little he knows about women of the ton. All the while having to watch Letty with two suitors who are all wrong for her. Oh, my, what will happen to our couple? What will a steamy kiss have to do with the ending? How will David react? So many questions and you will need to grab a copy to find out. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. I loved how clueless some men are till it's almost so late. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
