A family drama that encapsulates exactly how families act with eachother, and how those relationships can turn to if left to deteriorate. Also a stark reminder to make your amends, because you don't know when your relatives are going to pass. This novel left me positively bamboozled. When the first twist happened, it was kind of natural: it even explained why there was such a change in style and in ambiance. It also explained why a certain character is described in a certain way, right from the start you feel there is something sleazy about the guy. The second twist, exactly the same as the first, triggered by the same kind of hint, got me going "knew it", but it wasn't until the very last page that I realised Ian McEwan did it a third time! What are the odds of him doing this 3 times in a row, ammirite?
