Kahlil Gibran (Arabic: جبران خليل جبران ) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer.
Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon (then part of Ottoman Mount Lebanon), as a young man he emigrated with his family to the United States where he studied art and began his literary career. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture.
Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.

رسائل جبران لمي استمرت للثلاثينيات من هذا القرن ، و حتى الفترة التى عرض لها الكتاب ، اي ان هناك رسائل اخرى كثيرة (بينهما) لم يتم نشرها مما جعلنى اشعر بأن هناك حلقة ما مفقودة

I received my copy of this book yesterday from Barnes & Noble....and even though I paid for it, I felt like a child who received a wonderful gift.

When I first learned-from somewhere on the internet- that Gibran had a romantic relation with May Ziadah, I could not believe it...I thought it's just some tales for publicity...then I learned that Gibran's letters to May were published, and to my surprise there is an English version.

when I went to order the book, I was expecting they'd tell me it's out of print or it does not exist....today, I look at this book in my hands in disbelieve!

Yesterday, in the car, I indulged the first ten pages...then I kept going back and fourth reading few lines every while and then.

I think I'll be addicted to Gibran's writing for a while

right now i'm on page 24, and I'm amazed of how pure and divine his feelings are...he talks to her as if she's his...as if they're married for years...at the end of each letter he says "May God keep you for me"

Can't wait to read the Arabic version!

It must be very frustrating to be in love with someone who's faraway...how did they survive such love?

How were they able to indure all that love without any attempts to meet?

Were they scared of taking the challenge? The Challenge of love!

May expressed her fear of love, but Gibran was very sure of his feelings and he reassured her...so why didn't he take the right step forward and proposed to her?


Gibran & May love story is one of the strangest I've ever read!

And from what I've learned so far, I think many threads are missing leaving a reader like me with a lot to inquire!

It’s books like these that make me long for the art of letter writing. Gibran’s love for May oozes out of every crevice in this collection. The love they share is intimate and open, yet not entirely so. It is shrouded in symbols and mist. How can a relationship be so poetic and intense from such a distance? It grieves me to think about how much has changed in the last 100 years. I wonder if modern-day Gibran and May could have held on to such passion.

They never met, yet anyone can immediately sense that distance was never an obstacle for these two. I love how Gibran’s language grows warmer as we progress through the collection of letters. I hope that one day, we can experience May’s side of this conversation as well.

P.S. I’m jealous of everyone who can understand Arabic because I know so much is lost in translation!

A Spiritual Love Journey that I never wanted to end. How sweet the soul that loves with purity and grace.

Beautiful. I Love this book. Even though their love never was physical or sexual their special relationship with each other reached a higher plane. Truly they became one with the Beloved, as originally written by the Persian poet Rumi. They acheived true Agape Love, the Love of God which is higher, more beautiful and eternal rather than eros, which is the traditional erotic sexual love between a man and a woman. Truly they were soul mates of the highest order.

What this book means to me is that if a man and a woman connect on a spirtual level their love becomes eternal. When physical passion cools, spiritual or the passion of the soul may last a lifetime and who knows perhaps into the next life, once we have left that mortal coil.

I never seem to be in the right frame of mind to truly enjoy the words of Gibran. Or maybe I'm just not a fan, no matter the beauty of some of his words.

Anyway, I find it hard when someone links the concept of God to the concept of love.

I know that religious people think God is love and, therefore love is pure, but linking one to another feels like restricting the very definition of love.

Shouldn't love be something beyond everything else that matters to the human being - creed, beliefs, earthly possessions, even blood?

Not to speak of the fact that my God, or the people who supposedly represent Him, may not see as legitimate the love my brother feels.

It's a sad world this one where anything is used as a way to subjugate others.

I also sped read this one. I pray that I draw God more into my vernacular, like Gibran does so naturally in these letters. The Middle East does it so well & what a beautiful way to enrich language & shape experience.
The letters didn’t speak much to me but maybe I’m more of a poetry girl than a letters girl, unless the letters are from a loved one to me, or me to them

‘“Give us what we want or give us nothing at all.” No May, we do not do this, because we realise that what is right and blessed and permanent in life does not follow our wishes, but moves us according to its will.’

* هذا الكتاب مكافأة من نفسي لي بمناسبة الإجازة. قرأت الكتاب قبل مدة وأحسست بالجمود، وتصورت بأن تأجيله ليومه حل أفضل . اليوم هو يوم جبراني جميل، عشت قراءة تلك الرسائل وكأني مي أقرؤها بعد وفاته.. تعذيب لذيذ.

* لغته ليست لغة محب، لا أعلم ماهي! حنونة ربما لكن ما خطه جبران لمي ليس كلام عاشق متأجج المشاعر يكرر وصوف غيره أو يبدعها بنفسه لها. كلماته أشبه بكلمات أب يفهم تغييرات مزاج محبته وليست " حبيبته" ويلاطفها بما يناسب حالتها. أحياناً يغير مسار ما تريده مي منه بكلام عام فلسفي ويكرر كلمة صديقتي وصديقك ثم يعلقها بأمل حين ينسى ما كان ينوي كتابته في نهاية رسائله.

حبه ضبابي كما هو ضبابي حسب وصفه ومهما حاولت مي تقمص هيئته فإنها تعود لحقيقتها بكلمات منه وإن كان ظاهرها إيجابي". أنا ضباب وفي الضباب وحدتي وفيه وحشتي وانفرادي وفيه جوعي وعطشي . ومصيبتي أن هذا الضباب , وهو حقيقي , يشوق إلى لقاء ضباب آخر في الفضاء . يشوق إلى استماع قائل يقول " لست وحدك , نحن اثنان , أنا أعرف من أنت "

اخبريني , اخبريني يا صديقي , أيوجد في هذا العالم من يقدر ويريد أن يقول لي " أنا ضباب آخر أيها الضباب , فتعال نخيم على الجبال وفي الأودية . تعال نسير بين الأشجار وفوقها , تعال نغمر الصخور المتعالية . تعال ندخل معاً إلى قلوب المخلوقات وخلاياها , تعال نطوف في تلك الأماكن البعيدة المنيعة الغير معروفة " قولي لي يا مي , أيوجد في ربوعكم من يريد ويقدر أن يقول لي ولو كلمة واحدة من هذه الكلمات ؟"

* كنت أنتظر " أحبك" أي شيء (أي حاقة) لكن جبران مصر أن يقبل جبهة مي بصمت

* لو كنت صديقتها لصفعتها (كف) وأمرتها وأجبرتها بالتخلي عنه، الحمد لله إني لست كذلك لأن الحب يتحور مع المعاشرة لاشكال أخرى ولكل منها حلاوتها ولكن الناس وأنا منهم نستملح الشكل الأول الذي استمر في حالتهم عشرين سنة كونهم منفصلين.

* قبل أن أرحم نفسي وأنام. دائماً افكر لو كانت الرسائل في عصرنا الحالي ولا يشترط رسائل المحبين، هل ستكون بطعم؟

من أجمل ما قرأت :
وماذا أقول عن كهوف روحي ؟ تلك الكهوف التي تخيفك – إني التجئ إليها عندما أتعب من سبل الناس
الواسعة وحقولهم المزهرة وغاباتهم المتعرشة. إني أدخل كهوف روحي عندما لا أجد مكاناً آخر أسند إليه
رأسي , ولو كان لبعض من أحبهم الشجاعة لدخول تلك الكهوف لما وجدوا فيها سوى رجل راكع على ركبتيه
وهو يصلي .

شيء لا يعرف القناعة ولكنه ليس كالطمع , ولا يدري ما السعادة غير أنه لا يشابه التعاسة . في أعماقي خفقان

قد قلت لي مرةً " ألا إن بين العقول مساجلةً وبين الأفكار تبادلًا قد لا يتناوله الإدراك الحسي ولكن من ذا الذي
يستطيع نفيه بتاتاً من بين أبناء الوطن الواحد ؟".
إن في هذه الفقرة الجميلة حقيقة أولية كنت فيما مضى أعرفها بالقياس العقلي ، أما الآن فإني أعرفها بالختيار
النفسي . ففي الونة الخيرة قد تحقق لي وجود رابطة معنوية دقيقة قوية غريبة تختلف بطبيعتها ومزاياها
وتأثيرها عن كل رابطة أخرى ، فهي أشد وأصلب وأبقى بما لا يقاس من الروابط الدموية والجينية حتى والخلقية . وليس بين خيوط هذه الرابطة خيط واحد من غزل الأيام والليالي التي تمر بين المهد واللحد .
وليس بين خيوطها خيط غزلته مقاصد الماضي أو رغائب الحاضر أو أماني المستقبل ، فقد تكون موجودة بين
اثنين لم يجمعهما الماضي ولم يجمعهما الحاضر – وقد لا يجمعهما المستقبل .

الشك يلزم الخائفين السلبيين والارتياب يلحق من ليس لهم الثقة بنفوسهم ,
أما أنت فقوية إيجابية ولكِ الثقة التامة بنفسك فهل كنتِ مؤمنة بكل ما تضعه الأيام في راحتيك ؟ هل حولتِ
عينيكِ عن المظاهر الجميلة إلى الحقيقة الجميلة ؟

جبران خليل جبران رائع
وهذه الرسائل تختلف عن جميع مؤلفاته , لانها تبقى معبرة بشكل أكثر صدقاً وعمقاً عن شخصية جبران ,
الذي أحب على الرغم من بعده بالمسافة عن حبيبته ,
إلا أن قربه الروحي أو كما يسميه " العنصر الشفاف " من مي زيادة
كان كفيلاً بإستمرار هكذا عاقة لسنين بالرسائل البريدية التي لا تحمل أكثر من طابع بريدي وكلمات عذبة.

العنصر المفقود دائماً في هكذا انواع من الفنون هو الرسائل المقابلة , رسائل مي إلى جبران,
أين هذه الرسائل ..؟ ما هي الجريمة التي سترتكب لو نشرت هذه الرسائل ..؟
هذه الرسائل بغض النظر عن انها من إمراة إلى رجل ونشر هكذا رسائل قد يعتبر محرم في مجتمعنا
إلا أن هذه الرسائل تبقى بالنهاية كنز ادبي يجب ألا يوؤد بهذا الشكل العنيف..

على كل حال
رسائل جبران لمي ززيادة تختلف عن رسائل غسان كنفاني لغاة السمان,
رسائل غسان لا تشعر بنقص فيها وضرورة لقراءة الرسائل المقابلة من غادة,
أما رسائل جبران تشعر انك بحاجة ماسة إلى قراءة الرسائل المعاكسة من معي لجبران لتفهم المعنى والقصة بشكل أدق.

Both of Gibran and Mai are great writers to me. Gibran is one of my favorite romantic arab poets, Mai, for me, is the Sylvia Plath of the Arabs for she's full of all the feelings one could ever ask for.

Gibran and Mai love story, yes love, is one hell of a story. Simple yet full of complexity, madness, romance and passion. Although Gibran never fully states that he loves Mai -the way she did-, as he seems to insist on kissing Mai's forehead while she, passionately, addresses him, but wondering whether he loved her or not is one of the pleasures of reading these letters. This is not straight-forward, the letters are quite allusive and symbolic in a certain way. I mean it's poetry for God's sake. It's about language, loving without wanting, and choosing the permanent misery of one sided love\distance relationship.

Gw baca buku ini udah lama. Tetapi baru tahun ini gw mengalami hal yg sama, sesuai dg apa yg ditulis oleh Kahlil Gibran dlm buku ini. Gw jadi tersentuh, gw banget kisahnya. Gw juga jd sadar bahwa Love is something more than just say I love You....
Jauh d mata tetapi dekat di hati dan semoga selalu ada di dalam hati meski maut memisahkan gw dan dia. Ntah kenapa pula gw yakin suatu saat nanti gw dan dia bertemu untuk berikrar menyatukan hati gw dan dia, my love......

This is a lovely book of letters. The only thing that would make it better is if it had the responding letters from May Ziadah, however, it's Gibran and, therefore, beautifully written and absolutely worth reading. I wish people still wrote letters like this.

For Gibran fans, you do get glimpses of his soul here, but this collection of about 3 dozen letters are all by Gibran himself; May Ziadah's letters are not included. These are spiritual and artistic "lovers" who never met in person. A nicely produced little book, though.
