This book is a great example of why I do not read this particular genre. Lots of things happen to people other than the protagonist. These are mostly off screen. The protagonist hears about them, might talk about them but is not involved in them. Effectively, nothing happens that the reader is involved in. Only near the very end of the book does the protagonist actually get involved and action occurs as part of the actual story.

The plot has good bones; there is enough to make a good action story. However the author has chosen to make a drama in lieu of an action packed tale. The protagonist is a British salesman (of a small fleet of hovercraft), trying to sell to the US army based in Greenland. He is an outsider to the challenges faced by the US unit and they do not always appreciate his assistance. Nor do they always tell him what is going on. During this period a few characters get their knickers in a knot as this unknown outsider is acting outside their rules and their chain of command.

Finally he completes a task few if any of them can do. This leads him to the antagonist. We now learn why the hovercraft are important as the protagonist hunts down and deals with the antagonist thus saving the hard pressed army unit. All bad feelings are forgiven and the sale? You will have to read the book.

I rate this book three stars; anybody who likes this genre will enjoy it.

Denne thriller fant jeg spennende da jeg leste den som ung. Leste den igjen ifjor og finner den å være en "midt på treet" spenningsroman. Historien svikter litt, men beskrivelsen av kulden og hvor farlig det er å være ute i den er bra.

A good yarn if a bit unbelievable in places. I enjoyed the narrated voice of the outsider to the American base in the arctic and how one shock follows another but don’t think Kyle quite brought out the denouement.

Έχω έξι βιβλία του Ντάνκαν Κάιλ στη βιβλιοθήκη μου, αλλά αυτό είναι μόλις το πρώτο δικό του που διάβασα. Σε μια έρευνα στο ίντερνετ, για να βρω πληροφορίες για τον συγγραφέα και να διαβάσω κριτικές των βιβλίων του, είδα ότι πολλοί αναγνώστες τον βάζουν στο ίδιο ράφι με τους Ντέσμοντ Μπάγκλεϊ και Άλιστερ Μακλίν, δυο συγγραφείς που έχω διαβάσει αρκετά βιβλία τους, και αυτή η άποψη μου έκανε κλικ. Και συμφωνώ ότι είναι στο ίδιο επίπεδο και στο ίδιο στιλ, πάνω-κάτω. Έμεινα πολύ ευχαριστημένος με το Στη φρίκη των πάγων, πρόκειται για ένα συναρπαστικό θρίλερ, με πολύ μυστήριο, σασπένς, αγωνία και αρκετή δράση προς το τέλος.

Σαν πεδίο δράσης έχουμε ένα απομακρυσμένο στρατόπεδο σε ύψος 2.100 μέτρων μέσα σε χιονοθύελλες και τρομερές καταιγίδες, στον παγετώνα της Βόρειας Γροιλανδίας. Πρόκειται για έναν σταθμό πολικών ερευνών, με την ονομασία Στρατόπεδο Εκατό. Η προηγμένη τεχνολογία είναι απαραίτητη για να επιζήσουν οι 300 άντρες του στρατοπέδου. Ο Χάρι Μπόουες έρχεται στο στρατόπεδο για την δοκιμή ενός υπερσύγχρονου οχήματος που δεν έχει βγει στην αγορά ακόμα, αλλά τότε είναι που, τυχαία, αρχίζουν οι καταστροφές στο στρατόπεδο. Υπάρχει ένας μανιακός δολοφόνος και σαμποτέρ μέσα στο στρατόπεδο που έχει κάνει σκοπό της ζωής του να το καταστρέψει. Ποιος είναι αυτός, όμως; Θα βρεθεί στο τέλος, φυσικά, αλλά μέχρι τότε το στρατόπεδο και οι άντρες του θα περάσουν πολύ δύσκολες στιγμές,στις ήδη δύσκολες με τις συνθήκες που επικρατούν.

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι αυτά τα κλειστοφοβικά μέρη στα οποία συμβαίνουν περίεργα πράγματα, μου αρέσουν πολύ (όχι να είμαι παρών, αλλά να διαβάζω ιστορίες), οπότε γι'αυτό βάζω και ένα συν στο βιβλίο. Ο συγγραφέας καταφέρνει άριστα να μας μεταφέρει το κρύο και τις δύσκολες συνθήκες που επικρατούν, η όλη ατμόσφαιρα είναι καταπληκτική, η εξέλιξη της ιστορίας (με τις υλικές καταστροφές, τους φόνους, το μυστήριο, την αγωνία των πρωταγωνιστών για να βγάλουν άκρη κλπ), πολύ συναρπαστική και ενδιαφέρουσα, οι περιγραφές παραστατικές και ρεαλιστικές, οι διάλογοι επίσης φυσικοί και η γραφή φυσικά πολύ καλή.

Γενικά πρόκειται για ένα πολύ καλό θρίλερ που προσφέρει σασπένς και δράση. Η μετάφραση του Βασίλη Κοχλατζή ήταν πολύ καλή, όπως και η επιμέλεια του βιβλίου. Όσοι είστε λάτρεις του είδους και βρείτε το βιβλίο, πάρτε το.

It's a good book. Easy to read. Not too much jargon and technical terms to worry about. It picks up at the end and you get the hesitation to put it down
