Although the contributions of Islamic civilisations to science have long been recognised, the application of this scientific expertise to technology had been neglected until the publication of this then pioneering 1986 text. The book begins to remedy that neglect, first by celebrating the richness and ingenuity of the world of Islamic technology and then by pointing the way forward to its more detailed exploration. Lavishly illustrated, this book explores the major technological achievements of Islamic civilisations, namely the public works of civil engineering, the machines and mechanical devices which served to control water, provide power, serve as instruments or to amuse.

عالم ومؤرخ سوري (ولد عام 1925) حائز على وسام جوقة الشرف الفرنسية ومؤرخ العربية العلوم والتقنية الإسلامية، حاصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في الهندسة الميكانيكية من جامعة لندن. وعمل في جامعة حلب وكان عميد كلية الهندسة وفي وقت لاحق رئيسًا لجامعة حلب حيث أسس معهد التراث العلمي العربي في حلب، وكان أول مديرًا له. كما كان وزيرًا للبترول والثروة المعدنية والكهرباء في سوريا.

أستاذ زائر في قسم علوم التاريخ والفلسفة، في جامعة لندن.
عضو اللجنة العلمية الدولية في مشروع اليونسكو: الجوانب المختلفة للثقافة الإسلامية، ورئيس تحرير المجلد الرابع: العلم والتقنية في الإسلام.
أستاذ زائر في قسم دراسات الشرق الأوسط والدراسات الإسلامية ، جامعة تورونتو.

This book by Ahmad Y. al-Hassan and Donald R. Hill does an excellent job of explaining the scientific and technological inventions and advancements of the Islamic people and how they built upon the knowledge of previous eras. It is thorough with a wide variety of technologies discussed as well as easy to read and fast moving. Islamic Technology has an abundance of photographs, drawings and maps to accompany the text. This is an excellent overview for those geeks and history buffs out there!
