Excellent overview of Hunanese agricultural economy from the Ming to the early Qing, taking account of a wide sample of historical sources. Discusses both top-down state-level policies (of limited success) and bottom-up local-level practices which shaped Hunan’s current demographic distribution. An updated edition with more current data sampling strategies would be a great benefit to scholars of Hunan and its history.
