This is a totally amazing collection of personal stories about various women's lands & communities created during the 1970s and 80s. Somehow I found a copy for $10 a few years back, and have cherished it ever since.
If anyone else is into lesbian history, this book offers some amazing insights into the very personal hows and whys of women's land.
A very cool anthology of testimonies of womyn living on women's lands. Is a really hard to find book, I found one copy in a lesbian archives here, in Mexico, and just then really had a chance to read the whole book. The main idea of the book is to give a picture of lesbians living on land, with all the joys and pains of the process, some of the communes described in the book had by then be closed, most, if not all of them are currently inactive. The book is not academical, is more a book about women's lives speaking about that particular aspect of their herstories. As a rule, all the essays deal with particular conflicts, dreams and perspectives on the sucess or mistakes of living on land, some of them had legal/economical aspects, like titularity, agriculture, small breeding of animals and construction. The anthology is full of art by lesbian on the land, from drawings, watercolor, pamphlets, photos, slogans and poetry.
I would say that is a must read for every person interested on lesbian herstory, but certanly is kind of a time capsule, and there is a certain air of nostalgia for a world that has virtually disappeared.
Awesome!! Some of these projects are still going with some of the same women involved, it’s not over. Lots of extremely valuable insights on lesbian organizing, as well as juicy tidbits. Also very fun land pics with titles like “DYKES SHOVELING MANURE” and “TWO WOMYN USING TWO-WOMYN SAW TO FELL FIREWOOD”. Either the words or the pictures would be plenty by themselves. What a deal
