Very interesting and enjoyable book. Deep in the Heart offers a look into the lives of soldiers and families during the Civil War. It explores the tragedy of war not only death and wounds but also the lack of food, proper equipment and uniforms.

Families were separated for years. Children grew up without fathers. Mothers sent boys off never to see them again. Wives spent years worrying if their husbands would return to them whole, missing pieces or even at all.

Deep in the Heart is based on real people and real places...the author does a great job of bringing both alive.
