While the information in this book was clearly excellently researched and collated, I found that many of the suggestions provided were not accessible for someone of a low socioeconomic status. I felt that the author did not properly acknowledge the structural constraints that many people are under which force them to deprioritise living ‘toxin free’. However, it is most likely that the demographic that this book was aimed at was different to the one that I describe, and with that in mind, it would be helpful. I did find a lot of tips were arguably quite common sense, though perhaps I have a different perspective as I have read other related literature.
I don't read non fiction often but when I saw the tour invite come through for this book I knew I needed to read it. I've always been quite passionate about the environment and try to do what I can in the way most people do, recycling, buying less plastic, stopping purchasing single use items but this book really put a new spin on things for me.
The use of chemicals in our everyday products from cosmetics to pet food wasn't something I had particularly thought about much and this book really helped to paint a full picture of it for me.
The first aspect of this book I really liked was all the scientific evidence behind the authors claims and how well referenced everything was. Right from the start she is able to back up her claims and really get you thinking about the issue while still keeping it accessible. Not once did I have to look up a word I didn't know or puzzle to work out what she was saying.
Something which sets this book aside from others of a similar nature is the fact that it didn't come across as preaching or bullying, the author really managed to find a nice neutral yet informative tone which still managed to get the gravity of the situation across.
Despite it being on quite a worrying topic this book didn't leave me feeling hopeless as there were loads of easily doable tips spread throughout to help you in every aspect of your home and life, even in some you hadn't thought of before. Whether you're well versed in the topic or not I feel it would really help readers of all levels to make some positive changes.
Finally I just wanted to say how much I love the design of the cover and this book in general. The colour scheme and designs within really help to bring it to life and break up what could potentially be quite dense material.
After reading this I have found a few areas I want to start making changes to immediately and hope that you can find something useful in it for yourself to.
This guide to free yourself from the toxins of our life’s is utterly brilliant. I found this book was both informative but also helpful to understand what we individually can do to help our environment. Moving through rooms and our lives this gave insight and tips to help us all go toxic free. I know that I will be adopting some of these. I think it would be hard to go toxic free altogether but this book will help us all make changes . An absolute cracker of a book that I have already recommended to lots of friends!
An insightful read, balancing optimism and realism. Whilst the scale of the issue is horrifying, understanding that one can take genuine action to protect themselves and others was reassuring. Turns takes different sections of our lives one-by-one, and communicates scientific understanding about toxic pollutants. The book offers both individual actions, as well as recognises the policy/societal changes that need to take place. It's probably not a good read if you have health anxiety already, but definitely a good read if you want to be more informed! I loved it so much, and know I'll want to go back to it. So after listening to the audiobook which I borrowed from the library, I bought the physical copy!
A really insightful book that helps the reader understand how toxins impact our health and the planet and what we can do to reduce our exposure to them. I will definitely be swapping things in my home to toxin free alternatives and use this awareness moving forwards.
It's fine, but very overwhelming. And because of that it will be an afterthought in a week. That while this book should inspire some significant changes in lifestyle.
A solid and thorough work on chemical pollutants that surround us. After reading this book I feel that I have the tools and knowledge to lead a more sustainable life.
I was of course aware that chemical pollution is a global issue, but something I didn’t realise was how much we as people can actually do to help! If you haven’t given any thought to minimising your own chemical footprint (much like myself) then I highly recommend picking this book up, when the shock of what monsters most of us are subsides you will definitely learn something!
The book begins with a very informative introduction and then moves on to some myth busting - I found this really interesting and even managed to get my nephew Dylan (who is 9) involved in the reading! He started asking questions which honestly, I couldn’t answer with any certainty! I was surprised to find that I actually know very little about the subject matter. - Thankfully, we did find the answers to my nephews questions within the book, which says it all!
I particularly enjoyed part 2 of the book which is titled ‘How To Go Toxic Free’ . This section focuses on each room of the house, gives facts, tips and plenty of food for thought! It’s amazing how many chemicals are actually used in a single product!
I’m definitely going to be a bit more conscious of what I’m putting in my trolley when shopping in the future, small changes all add up and if everyone works together, we can surely make our planet somewhere the aliens want to visit!
A huge 5 stars!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’d like to thank Lovebookstours for allowing me to be part of this tour! I received a free copy of this book for review purposes. Views and opinions are my own and have not been influenced by anyone.
The climate emergency has been at the fore front of our minds over the last few decades. Most of us do our part, we recycle, we are cutting down on plastic wastage and most of us aware of chemicals that we use on a daily basis. Or are we?
“By volume, a huge 62 per cent of chemicals used in the EU are hazardous to human health and the environment”
Looking at toxins we breathe in, digest and use on ourselves this book has been so eye opening. How many of us really check the ingredients on all our cosmetics, deodorants, perfumes, shampoos and moisturisers? Do we lean towards those products that claim to be chemical free or responsibly sourced? What does chemically free and responsibility sourced actually mean? This book blows these claims out of the water, educating us on what chemicals are harmful and where we are likely to find them. It’s safe to say the majority of us would be horrified to find out what is in those products we lather ourselves in daily. Once these products are washed off our bodies, our clothes and flushed away they continue a path of destruction in our waterways.
This is a book everyone should read. I feel I’ve learnt so much and can definitely say I’ll be making a few more conscious decisions going forward. I loved the format, although it’s informative there is no real jargon that isn’t explained. It’s a simple read with a huge impact.
This is one of those books I found myself picking up reading a chapter or two then putting down and picking up again another day. It’s a comprehensive guide to the effects of global industrialisation and the changes we can all make in our lives to counteract them. Obviously not all sections will be appropriate to the reader for example I skimmed over the bit about kids toys.
Covering all aspects of our lives I found it extremely shocking some of the chemicals that we can ingest in our homes daily. But what I did like about the book is the way it dispelled some myths around things that are good or harmful.
What I would say is there is so much information here that it all got a bit confusing when I read too much of it. Unless you are really committed I’m guessing most people will only make minor changes. But anything is better than nothing. I will definitely keep this to hand and try and make changes appropriate to me ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is such an easy read with practical and pragmatic tips to living a more toxic free life. I have been dipping in and out of this book over the past couple of weeks, taking in some of the facts and suggestions on where to make changes.
The second part of the book pulls out the different areas you can make a difference and provides well thought out and easy to follow tips - a few examples are above. Such as in the kitchen - I try so hard to not buy food products with excess plastic, and we always try to use glass containers as opposed to plastic ones.
There are so many things we can do to better our environment - and most are small steps that can be done easily and slowly - which in time will make a huge difference! This book certainly educates you to make decisions on how your behaviour should change for the better. So I would absolutely recommend it
A honestly okay book, with many tips on going "toxic free" and reducing household and life use of chemicals.. but also the book tips are so varied and somewhat pedantic, and come from someone likely of a privileged position.
Basically - to sum the book up - everything is to some degree going to poison and eventually kill you; plastic packaging, fake meat, wall paint, chemicals in lipstick, dust (genuinely), transport emissions, local factories, not filtering water, using said unfiltered water to water plants (and so pass on the toxic particulates to the plants soil), and so on.
Bit of a downer read, but of course all the issues stem - kind of - through the capitalist system we're stuck and living in; rushing various new developments to wide public use without thorough testing for monetary gain (plastic, lead, asbestos, etc).
Everyone needs to go read this book! I've found it very helpful with some really great information. It starts by explaining what toxic free really means and what it doesn't mean. What the top ten toxic chemicals are and how they can impact the environment and our bodies. It then goes on to give some practical advice to avoid toxic substances in different areas of the home. I found this very useful and the changes aren't even that difficult to make! I also like that it explains everything is a very easy to understand way. There is also plenty of additional reading and resources mentioned that I have already made use of! Overall a really helpful book that I will definitely be using to be more environmentally friendly!
“Everything is connected. We are all part of this Earth's ecosystem; not above it and definitely not separate from it. Our actions affect our environment and each other, as well as future generations, here and on the other side of the world”
This book is such an important tool for the eco-conscious consumer. To paraphrase one of the researchers, as consumers we shouldn’t need a PhD to make eco friendly decisions when it comes to our home. Anna Turns gives a brilliant overview of the harm toxicity causes on our environment. As she points out, much of our attention is placed upon single-use plastic when it comes to making more eco-conscious decisions. Chemicals and toxic materials are frequently overlooked. Turns’ book offers a wide range of guidance and research concerning toxicity in our homes and gardens, and how this not only impacts our health, but also the health of planet earth. It is detailed and scientific without overcomplicating it for the reader. Go Toxic Free is a brilliant read for anyone, no matter what level of scientific or environmental knowledge you have.
I was drawn to this book as, like many people just now, I am looking at ways to help reduce pollution and increase sustainability.
This is an extremely informative book which gives in-depth information about the toxic chemicals found in our home. I liked the bullets points at the end of each chapter which is ideal if you want to dip in and out of the book.
I had no idea when I started reading this that there was this amount of chemical pollution in our homes. We are taken room by room through our home and shown simple ways in which we can help reduce the pollution. The book was a complete eye opener for me.
It's truly unfortunate that Anna had to pen such an outstanding book. Money often takes precedence over the needs of nature and humanity. Corporate greed has led us to this predicament, and we owe Anna a debt of gratitude for the work and research she invested in creating this valuable book. The significant challenge we now face is to act on her recommendations. It's through tidying up our own lives and making mindful purchases with our hard-earned money that we can make a meaningful difference. The book's structure is commendable, especially the "How to Find Out More" section, which encourages further engagement. People power will win out.
Go toxic free is an eye opening book that aims to educate us on how to reduce chemical pollution. It is fascinating (and terrifying) how our every purchase, what we eat, and everything we use has enormous repercussions for our planet and bodies. I have already, just from reading a few of my most anticipated sections, learned a lot and am finding it really interesting. I can’t wait to read the rest of the sections in this book and spend time planning how I can make changes to reduce our exposure to chemicals!
Thank you for sending me a copy of this fab little book!
I found this book to be an easy read, it was very informative and I was quite shocked to learn just how many chemicals are in a lot of our everyday products! I loved that it went through each of the rooms and it gave tips and practical advice on how we can all make simple changes to avoid toxins. A really helpful, eye opening book that I think everyone should read. I will definitely be referring back to this book through out the year as I make changes to reduce toxic chemicals in my home. Fantastic book! 😃👏🏼
A well researched book that is both practical and enlightening. Just when I thought I was doing OK with reducing my use of plastics and other harmful compounds I learn that some so called eco friendly products are far from eco. The most terrifying is the "forever chemicals". This book should be included in every school's curriculum.
Absolutely fascinating, I read it from cover to cover, having my eyes opened as I went. I now have a much better insight on how much damage we are doing to our environment & what I can do to help to change this by making simple swaps on products I use in & around the home.
Written in a simplistic way making it easier for everyone to understand I found this a very informative read & I will certainly be looking at making some changes to help reduce the use of chemicals in my home.
Essential, practical and positive. THIS should be taught at schools. Will be buying paper copies to keep as reference book, give out to friends and family.
