This book is a revision of the hugely successful first edition of Mastery of Your Anxiety and Worry, Therapist Guide. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the accompanying Workbook. This new Guide is for practising mental health professionals who treat adult clients diagnosed with Generalised Anxiety Disorder and/or excessive worry. It lays out a 12-lesson program of new procedures to help clinicians teach their clients to learn to monitor their anxiety, gain control and initiate needed change. Cognitive-behavioural techniques such as cognitive restructuring and in vivo exposure are explained. The treatment offered is evidence-based and proven to be effective.
This book had lots of great information on treating panic attacks and agoraphobia, but was organized very poorly. The organization of the chapters do not correspond with the recommended organization of sessions. It requires that therapist to flip back-and-forth between chapters from session to session because of the way that the chapters are organized. Many of the sections also have recommendations for what to work on with the client during that part of the chapter, but do not actually provide the information necessary for the client but rather depend on the therapist already have that knowledge.
Review from someone who got this book for panic attacks when flying. Full disclosure I do not suffer from panic and anxiety chronically.
I was able to fly comfortably after reading and doing the exercises in this book. Life changing for me.
This book is focused on those who suffer daily from anxiety and panic. I do not. I do get panic attacks on planes and the techniques in this book have helped me tremendously. If like me, panic and anxiety aren’t a daily issue, you can still benefit from some of the exercises.
