A fast read to gain knowledge of the life mission of John Brown. I am still conflicted about the way he chose to stand up for what he believed. I applaud him for caring so much about the freeing of slaves and for being a pioneer in recognizing slaves as human beings.
Before I read this book I was told that I would either love or hate John Brown. As I disagree with Brown on decisions he made, I respect the fact that he lived by principle. Brown is a tragic figure in my mind. He was not ruthless enough to annihilate his enemy at any cost, or even to truly define his enemy, and he was not passive enough to sit still while the atrocity of slavery continued. A very interesting study and a very interesting man.
This book is a glowing tribute to John Brown's life. In all fairness, there is much information available portraying him in a negative light. I was just hoping for a more balanced presentation - neither vilifying the man nor placing him on a pedestal.
