Got this at a used book sale at the library. The writing in this book was acceptable from a historical narrative point of view. I think the author got a little too dramatic, or maybe a better way to put it is too British Nationalistic, but not excessively so. The one thing he very successfully got across in this book is the scale of this terrible conflict. The unfathomable loss to human life is laid bare as you read of battle, after battle, after battle that claimed hundreds of thousands of human lives each. Death on a scale incomprehensible in a modern war context is inescapable as you compare this war to anything we have experienced post 9-11. This book gave me nightmares and I grew up watching war movies. If you are not familiar with WWI, then read this book. There are lots of historical photos and I think everyone should understand what happened, so we never enter so eagerly into war as was the case in the “war to end all wars”.
