Strategy-to-performance gaps foster a culture of under-performance. Unrealistic plans create the expectation throughout the organisation that plans simply will not be fulfilled. The book shows how to overcome such failings and implement strategy effectively. Common failings include: companies rarely track their performance against long-term plans - less than 15 per cent of companies make it a regular practice to go back and compare the business' results with the performance forecast for each business unit in its prior years' strategic results; results rarely meet projections - when companies do track performance, it rarely matches the prior years' projection. The consequence is year-after-year of under-performance relative to the original plan; and, a lot of value is lost in translation - a combination of poor communications, misapplied resources, limited accountability and lack of information creates an in-built strategy-to-performance gap.
I wanted to give 2 stars while reading it, but thought my impression might improve. Unfortunately it just went downhill.
It is nore like a work of fiction "inspired by true events" than a business/strategy book.
Lots of fluff; plenty of name dropping and sprinkled jargons. Thus good for coffe or water cooler talk. Also little new or insightful content for me when I try to get to the core of it.
What disappointed me the most: If I take it as a book that tries to present a framwork or a system for successful strategy execution, the text fails to convince that there are few or no loopholes in its contextual underpinnings. In fact it doesnt even make an attempt. So basically, it feels like a semi random collection of texts from the internet.
There are better books on this subject. Would suggest to avoid wasting time with rhis one.
A good book stressing the point 'Strategy is 99% about execution' with examples of success and failures from likes of GE, BA,HSBC Rail, Diageo, Reuters. I read it after my MBA and it brought a good sense to what I had read at class and now had to 'get it done'
A compact book full of examples. Goes quite broadly into various aspects of execution, change management and innovation. Most helpful is the summary at the end.
