This is mostly a fair assessment of Guderian's combat abilities and role in the creation of the panzer divisions. The prose is turgid in places and the long discussion of armored theorists (particularly the British) seems a bit misplaced. Certainly Guderian was not the father of armored warfare, but that was clear even before Battistelli discusses Fuller.

One in the Osprey series, "Command." This slim volume focuses on German military leader Heinz Guderian. Guderian had experience in World War I, became interested in and a theoretician of armor during the interwar period. His ideas helped develop the doctrine for the German armored forces, the Panzer forces.

This book traces his rise, his role in the early years of the war (including success as a field officer leading Panzer forces). It also does a nice job of exploring some of his weaknesses and the difficulties he encountered later in the war.

For a brief introduction to this important military figure, this work serves its purpose well.

This one has a dull prose compared to the other books in the series. Plenty of details (perhaps too much) on panzer types and specifications, but not enough on Guderian the man, the commander, and the theorist. However on the whole I find the assessment balanced, critical but not overly.
