Recipes for Self Healing is about nutritional healing through the lens of Chinese medicine. It explores the nutritional wisdom and insights of Chinese medicine and makes them both relevant and accessible to the modern westerner. It is a powerful, informative self help tool for anyone interested in nutrition. The book also contains about a hundred recipes using familiar western foods with unique descriptions of each recipes healing actions.
This book is a continuation of Leggett's first book Helping Ourselves. Once you have read Helping Ourselves, this book goes into a little more depth on the principles used to understand your constitution and how to prescribe food to yourself to support your constitution. I like this book because having that little extra understanding helps you apply the knowledge in your every day life. There are a lot of interesting recipes in this book. I personally do not cook very many of the recipes how they are described. But, I have used the recipe section extensively to understand the energetics of the individual foods contained in the recipes. That is what is so great about approaching food this way. You can still maintain your taste preferences. With new knowledge about food you then know what happens in your body when you eat certain things.
This book helped solidified some concepts I'm learning in a course on Chinese Medicine, but it doesn't seem to stand alone as a resource to learn which foods will support your own particular imbalances; I feel like I need to read the author's "Helping Ourselves" to become more familiar with the energetics of a wider range of foods.
I bought this on recommendation from my acupuncturist/nutritionist. Following the guidelines based on my diagnosis, I was able to reverse some of my digestion problems with the guidance of this book. The recipes are very good and clearly specify which diagnosis the meals target. I highly recommend it.
