I devour the same books I enjoy writing: science fiction, set in an apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic or dystopian world. I love stories about regular people being thrust into extra ordinary circumstances, and having to rely on their own cunning and that of others to survive. And I love a twist at the end.
My just released Ashfall Apocalypse, as well as previous series Madness, Highway and Stone Age are those kind of stories. They're fast moving, have some regular (and amazing) characters who must make life changing decisions, all while the world is experiencing an apocalypse.
Besides writing, my wife and I travel the world (often to research the next book). But often you can find me on a beach, Kindle in hand, with my Toes in the Water (name of my publishing company).
It's a bit slow at the beginning but once everything kicks off then I was carried through the book because it just doesn't stop. There are twists and turns that I couldn't have guessed and it all adds to the tension. A great read.
Excellent character driven story, & I liked how religion is used to show oppressiveness, domination, control, manipulation, against those who chose another way of life, only to once more become under the thumb of those who would destroy America as the “Great Satan”.
Ok truth be told that partially through book I thought I was reading a sympathizer book and got mad however it righted itself. First time reading authors work and I’m hooked. On to next book
This book has a very good plot and lots of action. It is, unfortunately, all too believable and therefore quite frightening. It provides a great deal of food for thought.
Reading this book was the literary equivalent of going to see a Steven Seagal movie: lots of jingoistic subtext, one-dimensional characters, and stereotyped foreign enemies - a shallow, action-driven, mildly entertaining way to spend a couple hours. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic literature, but I'm pretty sure this book was aimed at a different demographic than mine. Three stars for the book because I did read and mostly enjoy it. Only two stars for me as the reader, though, for continuing to read a book that actually made me quite uncomfortable in its portrayal of Islam in a way that feels exploitative at best, and xenophobic at worst.
There's a LOT of books out there on EMPs and the end of American civilization, however this one certainly had a unique twist on events, with lots of plot turns throughout. The jumping around to days or years before could be a bit frustrating at times, but they provide necessary information, and the frustration only comes from wanting to get back to the main storyline to find out what happens next. I'm an avid reader, reading 1-3 books a week, so often I can predict what's coming next from the tiny hints dropped, but there was definitely a lot that I didn't see coming in this book, and that's a welcome change! Excited to read the next one, which I'm downloading now!
Frightening, because it could happen or I should say is plausible. Look at our border crisis that really started in 2010 and became the worst ever in 2021-2024. Thousands upon thousands of unchecked, unvetted migrants are here! We know many terrorist took advantage of our idiotic policies, and came into our country and this could happen. Read Art of War written in 500 bc! This was well written, read it in a day, couldn't put it down. Now I'm ready for the next. After reading this, I find myself asking what would I do? Run? Hide? Fight? I mean to them I am a infidel so .....
Due to failing eyesight I am forced to enjoy most of my reading pleasure through audiobooks. It is incredibly important that you select the appropriate voice to read your books because they are essentially, the backbone of whether or not that audiobook will succeed.
This was not a bad book, but the narration was so enthusiastic throughout that it felt out of place. It's so insensitive to say but I felt like the narrator needed a Xanax. A monotonal reading would have been more appropriate for an apocalyptic story then how I would normally read a Clifford the giant dog story to my son.
This could really happen. A wake up call for everyone. A young girl and her brother set out to go home to Arizona after their father is killed. They did not know that the US had been hit by Arab militants and bombs. They did not know how deeply their family was involved. The drama and action in this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I am going to the next book immediately as the suspense is killing me. I recommend this for a good read. Thank you M.L. Banner for a great futuristic and prophetic book.
This started out very promising, but then fell flat about three quarters of the way in. There are only so many times a person can escape being raped, beaten or shot before it becomes completely unbelievable. Another big issue for me (and the one that ruined this book for me) was the "family ties". Why was the father sending the kids to the terrorist he was trying to hunt down all those years? He was working this case for how many years and didn't know it was his brother? The whole thing just sat wrong with me.
I don’t often give anything 5 Stars. But for the innovations alone this books deserves them. Add excellent descriptive writing and a great story! But I didn’t give it 5 Stars because the characters remain ill defined, and the steps of the timeline so condensed as to be impossible to actually live through. Still I am looking forward to the next book. Well done!
I normally like post-apocalyptic novels. And this one promised FOUR books in the series. How could you go wrong? Well, forgive me...but this one just did not keep my interest. Perhaps it was the over-the-top use of Middle-Eastern bad guys. Or the time switching to present the story line. I don't know. Clearly the promotional campaign attracted attention. 3 stars is all I can muster for this one. Note that I have started the second book in this series.
3.5 Stars. Instead of a survival story of finding food, water and shelter, the survival is fighting terrorists. I enjoyed the first part of the story, when Lexi and Travis were “on the road” looking for their uncle. Once they found their uncle, it’s all about fighting terrorists. Not my type of book.
Scary with current immigrant conditions, full of twists
Lexi and her brother Travis are on a trip with their Dad when the bombs drop. Both nuclear and EMP bombs over major cities cause society to start unraveling. A wreck kills their Dad before he can come clean about his secret identity. On foot they are harassed by opportunists and finally captured by an unknown terrorist, who is related to them. Will they survive!
This is not a straight and narrow highway. Had some nice twists and curves. The characters in their fictional awesomess have an inclination to survive. I knowingly realize I’m the character who dies in the background, day one. It’s interesting to see who sits in the drivers seat.
A storyline about a very real possibility that could occur in the USA. Many twists and turns with edge of your seat action. While I don't usually read books of this genre I thourally enjoyed the first book looking forward to the second. M.L. Banner is a masterful storyteller. I highly recommend this book
Excessively melodramatic, unempathetic, ethnocentric, and pedantic. I was hoping that the book was going to highlight the damage that can arise from stereotyping and entire group of people. But no, it steered hard into it, reinforcing the idea that all Muslims are Jihadists. That's when I walked away. Life's too short to read bad fiction.
Sounds so realistic for what could really happen. It did get confusing at times, but it was necessary for the story. A character list with explanations when new characters are added would help.
This book was so thrilling!! My heart raced with each chapter. Its so difficult to put down once you start and then of course it ends with a cliffhanger. So ready for Book 2!!!
The blurb did not prepare me for what a gripping story this is. The plot had twists and turns that I didn't expect and kept me guessing. The characters were well developed. Editing was good. Readers of military dystopian will like this book.
This book tells of the Muslim plan and their start to try and destroy the US. The many groups already in America destroy the electric grid though out the states. This is the first plans. More to follow.
Clunky conversation. Two dimensional characters. However, Interesting premise. So, since it is free with Kindle Unlimited, I will continue reading series to get full picture.
I enjoyed this book immensely. It's hard to put down and get busy around here! I'm very glad that the assistant reader exists, while cleaning and cooking I can still "read my books" 📚
This story kept my attention. It's an interesting premise and a new spin on the idea of a sleeper cell. It's a bit farfetched as the plan to overrun the US is not plausible. I liked the cast of characters and there's certainly many more stories to fill in.
Very good, lots of excitement, some interesting characters. It was one of those hard to put down books, but there was also a little dread in picking it back up. Lot's of death and destruction.
It's scary because this could really happen in real life And people just don't get it I'm looking forward to book 2 and And I have high hopes it's gonna be just as good.
