I devour the same books I enjoy writing: science fiction, set in an apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic or dystopian world. I love stories about regular people being thrust into extra ordinary circumstances, and having to rely on their own cunning and that of others to survive. And I love a twist at the end.
My just released Ashfall Apocalypse, as well as previous series Madness, Highway and Stone Age are those kind of stories. They're fast moving, have some regular (and amazing) characters who must make life changing decisions, all while the world is experiencing an apocalypse.
Besides writing, my wife and I travel the world (often to research the next book). But often you can find me on a beach, Kindle in hand, with my Toes in the Water (name of my publishing company).
Decided to DNF at 42%… the first book in this series, Highway, was a solid read for the most part. Once the pace picked up it became quite the page turner. Aside from the grammatical errors/misspelling, my main concern as I got deeper into the first book was the worldview with which the story was being told. I was afraid that things were drifting a little too close to an anti-Muslim and MAGA fueled perspective which is definitely not my cup of tea.
Once I got to the second novel it be came clearer to me that this author is building a literary world filled with anti-Muslim rhetoric that borders on a propagandist take on the current state of the sociopolitical climate in the US and it started to feel rather distasteful.
On top of that, this second book starts introducing far too many side characters to keep up with and the different subplots that pop up are so distracting I started to become quite annoyed. In the first 100 pages, not much storytelling actually happens and the plot progresses slower than a snail’s pace. Constantly bouncing around from character to character and subplot to subplot takes me out as the lack of continuity is so abhorrent and it made me lose interest in the story way too fast.
The first book in this series was a strong start and it showed promise. So much so that even as the MAGA vibes became more apparent to me I was still interested in reading on just to get the story out of it. Now I’m wishing that the first book in this series just served as a standalone novel. Not all stories need to be turned into a series, especially not by an author who lacks a clear vision and a tactful way of portraying it to their audience. Will not be reading on, I’m disappointed.
Lexi & Travis Broadmoor have reached the home of their uncle Abe Broadmoor
And discovered that he was leading an army of Muslim terrorists whose goal is to overthrow the Great Satan, America, and establish the Islamic Caliphate in America. He has also declared that Levi's new name is Suhaima and she was to become his new wife. Arabia's new name is Abdul-aziz and he was to be Abdul's son. Somehow Lexi wasn't fond of this idea and plans to kill her uncle, the man who killed her mother and was responsible for her father's death. All too timely, this chapter in the destruction of America could be cut from current history and is doubly likely to aggravate every patriotic, or paranoid, or both, bone in your body! Hide your guns. Join a militia. And join the revolution while there's still a free country named America. This is a great read!
The narrative meandered like a lost tourist, with dialogue as stiff as a starched collar. Characters flatter than week-old soda populated a plot that sprawled like an unruly garden, sprouting subplots faster than weeds. I found myself playing literary hopscotch, leapfrogging through tangential storylines, desperately clinging to the original characters' thread. Finishing the book became an endurance test worthy of an Olympic medal in patience. However, since it is free with Kindle Unlimited, I will continue reading series to get full picture.
Lexi, Travis and Frank arrive to the house that Stanley bought, furnished, set up for the apocalypse. The war has started in town and cities all over the USA including Sun Bay, FL and Stowell, TX. Military bases were gassed killing 98% of those on base. Frank, Lexi and Jonah managed to rescue the few in Florida. Left at home to man the radio, Travis is missing. A message was left, he has Travis and he wants Lexi too. Her father's brother isn't dead and he left Lexi a gift, Travis's pinky finger. Great job. Thank you.
He has written a book that has probed some of the deepest fears of many people. It is riveting, the characters are real and believable. You will be in their world shortly after the first page. I read post apocalyptic genre normally, but I’m glad I took a good look at this series. I think you will enjoy it, and I’m sure it will make you think. Cheers.
These are such great books. Follow along with Lexi and Travis who have connections with the worst of the Arabic invaders of the US. As they and Frank and Grimes and others fight to keep the US free. There are heroes, bad guys, battles, losses and hidden enemies. Travis is stolen and Lexi must go for him. I am hanging on the cliff..... I recommend this book if you like suspense and patriotism. Thank you M.L.Banner for a great book. ,
Great writing. Very interesting and intriguing characters. Divisions within one family, lead to varied and different plot than most apocalypse stories. Believe me, I have read hundreds. There are many twists and turns throughout the storyline. It is difficult to know who the good guys are. It is an almost impossible fight on the side of the Americans.
US citizens & a small collective of militias, surviving US military are fighting off the evading terrorists. The kids are captured by their megalomaniac terrorist uncle, realizing now his tentacles have been reaching into their lives for years.
The plot is still good all the way through the second book. I am looking forward to reading the third book. Though the story is quite excellent, the book could be greatly improved by fixing the many misspelled and misused words and the frequent instances of awkward sentence structure.
First book I’ve actually picked up and read in probably 15 years, enjoyed it very much. (Yes I started on the second book idk how to work kindle gimme a min)
Book 2 continues the post-apocalyptic "Highway" story line. Our heroes, Travis and Lexi, confront more chaos as evil foreigners detonate atomic bombs, followed up by invasions attempting to roll through towns, capturing and killing along the way. So, my review? Two stars. Repetitive events. Society collapses. Just had difficulty unraveling the players.
