Don't Look Down

Rate this book
Landon Spencer

As one of the first openly bisexual players in the NHL, I’ve gotten my fair share of attention from puck bunnies. Men and women alike looking for their time in the spotlight. They’ve taught me to be careful of who I let close.

When I meet Sky in a random video game chat there’s an instant connection. My instincts tell me I can trust him, but experience holds me back. When I finally decide to let him in, somehow he becomes not just my best friend, but my whole world. When life slams him into the boards and shatters the man I love, I just might have to face my greatest fear of all to drag him out of the depths of despair.

Skylar Donovan

I've always considered myself to be fearless. Some would call me reckless, but I wouldn’t say that. I’d prefer the label adrenaline junkie. If I can jump off of it, I will.

I never expected a random gaming match would lead me down a road to destiny. To him. Or that I’d travel that road with one of my favorite players in the NHL. Being with him is a new level of adrenaline rush. The best kind of high. When tragedy leaves me broken, can Landon remind me how to spread my wings again and soar?

Don't Look Down is an MM, friends to lovers, hockey romance. It's book one in a three book series of interconnected standalones.

He was made to be in my arms. My perfect counterpart.

This is the author’s debut novel and it was fantastic!
I loved the prologue. It’s like Sky looking on this story in hindsight.
And here’s what you get:

✈︎ hidden identity
✈︎ screens apart
✈︎ online friends to lovers
✈︎ secret celebrity crush (sports)
✈︎ hurt/comfort
✈︎ the bestest group of friends and family

Skyler is such a bubbly and outgoing sunshine who lives for the thrill of exciting things like skydiving. I loved him instantly. And he’s also a big hockey fan for his local team and super gay (he said so himself). Landon is a professional hockey player, openly bi-sexual, easy going and super easy to like. When they form a friendship online their instant connection and friendship is palpable. Only, that Landon doesn’t tell Sky that he is the Landon Spencer. Until there is no way around.

“Bitch, I’m fucking breathing, but his fucking name is on my shirt! I stood up and flashed his name at him like a fucking fanboy, and he fucking winked at me! What is even happening right now?”

You guys have no idea. When the moment of truth rolled around and Sky would find out who Landon is in real life, omg my pulse was spiking, I was literally short of breath and so nervous right alongside Landon and then I was freaking out right alongside Sky.

I mean we all know the excitement before an epic scene or the revelation of a secret but hell, these pages were actually quite the trip. *lmaooo Imo that only speaks for the author’s talent to take her readers on a journey that makes them feel and getting them really connected to their characters!

Landon and Sky are both so damn into each other (it’s really so cute!) but they both decide to not acknowledge it. And they insist on being “just friends”. Besides, Landon has a not-girlfriend he’s exclusive with for the time being. But that girl is a hoot.

Their friendship deepens even more and gets even a little flirtatious. Hell, the sexual tension WAS KILLING ME!! I loved how their relationship came to be even if it took way more pages than I usually like. *lol But when they finally let it happen it was explosive! And hot. So hot.

But here is what bugged me (mild spoilers!) and had me on edge for the better part of the second half of the book: When a blurb and even the prologue is telling you that there is a tragedy coming for one of the mc’s you expect something to happen. But it didn’t. 50% rolled around, then 70%, then 80. Nothing. Looking at what little was left of the book I got antsy. And it took from my enjoyment to be honest. I couldn't imagine the author could make an impact here and tell the whole story including the whole hurt/comfort aspect that was promised. I couldn’t believe it but she actually did. So believe me when I say —trust the process. And don’t get antsy and annoyed from the waiting for the inevitable to happen. Just don’t. It’s happening. The hurt and the comfort certainly could’ve been drawn out more for said impact but I guess in favor of keeping the story light and swoony it wasn’t.

With that said, I go back to my praise for this author’s first published book. You did great! Congratulations!! I’m looking forward to the next one.

special shoutout to fabulous and highly entertaining and lovable side characters: to Addy, Sky's best friend. To Leigh, Landon's best friend and teammate. And to Annie, Landon's mom. ♡

3.5 rounded up because it’s a debut

And for a debut I thought it was really good. I really liked the story. The premise of meeting anonymously online was fun. It was an enjoyable read.

I do feel like it needed to be edited way down. So many long paragraphs that were just over explainy and way more information than necessary. With a stronger editor this could have been so good.

Also all the slang and dialogue was so cringey to me. The way the characters spoke was just too much. Again could have been edited way down because it was just cringey. But also I’m an old lady who hates modern slang lol so maybe that’s just a me thing.

I’m looking forward to more from this author!

There was just … too many words? A lot of things were wayyyyy too detailed and I’m like okay WE GET IT. Otherwise, relationship was cute although it took forever.

I loved the beginning so much and the banter was really funny and refreshing but after they met it just became a mess of a story. I love slow burns but this wasn't even that and after the 40% mark it ended up being just a lot of filler and not enough time with them together.

“Mmm, I love Toaster Strudels, but I’d rather be a Twinkie.”

This was really great for a debut novel. We had a really cute, friends to lovers, sports MM romance. From the blurb and the prologue I was expecting this book to be pretty angsty so I was surprised that it’s fairly low-angst. It’s definitely a slow-burn but that really allowed for their friendship to develop and them to get to know each other so well!

Sky was a fantastic character. He was very over-the-top at times but I actually really enjoyed that about his character. Landon was really down to earth and I loved how their friendship started and it wasn’t a celebrity crush kind of thing. I thought they had amazing chemistry.

I think if the story was a bit shorter and the hurt/comfort came into play earlier in the story it would have been amazing. Either way I’m super happy with their relationship and their HEA. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and I have a couple guesses on who those MCs might be!

2.5 🌟

I love the idea of the hidden identity & celebrity crush tropes, so I was very excited to read this one! But after they met, the story quit working for me.
They spent a while fighting their attraction to each other, which created some nice sexual tension but I didn’t get why they were fighting it. There was nothing stopping them?
After a while Sky’s slangy way of talking got on my nerves. His character was like an urban dictionary bot and it got distracting.
The prologue hinted that something bad would happen but it wasn’t anything I was expecting and I didn’t care for the drama at the end.
Despite the things I wasn’t a fan of, I can still see myself continuing the series

We breathe together. Breathe for each other and with each other. Almost like two broken halves of a whole that was incomplete without its other piece. I didn’t know I was broken, until I found him and he put me back together. I only hope I can complete him like he completes me.

i personally loved it but it definitely had a few problems like the tragedy happened like 80-85% into the book. but i still felt it worked somehow? But other than everything worked. i just love found family. it warms my heart and you can tell Sky and Landon were meant to be 🥹 i was shocked to find this was a debut from the author bc any author that can get me to read a 400 page book is a miracle worker

I think I've loved him since the moment I met him. My soul recognized his, and everything clicked into place. He just made sense because he belonged. He belongs with me.

I want to start by saying that I think this is a great debut novel!

I've read many a MM romance debut that miss the mark by a mile (hey we are all learning at the beginning, so no hate on that), but I think Jessica stood out because their first book was executed well here.

It has a lot going for it, there are a lot of micro-tropes that I think many readers will really enjoy, as well as no third act breakup (for those of you that hate those).

There are sweet moments that I absolutely loved, and I really liked that Savannah wasn't made out to be some kind of villain or a point on contention (when authors hate on women to make it a plot point), I loved that we didn't have that here. And the spice? It was spicing, ya'll.

All that being said, personally, this book had a few things that didn't work for me. And I'll emphasize, I think it's a me problem, not the book, just personal preference things that I like and dislike when I'm reading.
First off, there was a lot of setup for what I'm guessing is going to be a main character in the next book, but it almost took chunks away from the story of Sky and Landon because it kept bringing up what Cal was going through and Cal's story.
I don't mind getting a hint of a main character for a next book, but this felt almost heavy handed and like it took away from moments in Sky and Landon's story instead.

I don't want to say too much else because I don't want to spoil anything, but I do think this plot was uniquely done and it's worth giving this new series a go!

This was a solid debut by Jessica Ann. We have a professional hockey player in the NHL who ends up meeting someone while playing games online. They end up chatting while playing and instantly have a pretty deep connection (far past gamer chat). This was unique and really cute.

Sky (who is a huge hockey fan) has inadvertently befriended not only a pro hockey player but his favorite player on his favorite team. I really loved the part where Landon reveals who he is to Sky. I was living for it.

Once they meet it felt like it just dragged. There was no real reason why either was fighting the fact that they were attracted to one another. Landon is a proud bisexual athlete and Sky is definitely not in the closet. Neither had any real reason not to pursue more with the other. Especially when both are very obviously attracted to each other and were FLIRTING up a storm every single time they spoke.

Another thing that irked me was the way Sky talked. It was like he was always “on” and I hated him calling everyone “boo” 🙄

The tragedy that happens near the end (this is not spoilers - it is foreshadowed in the prologue) felt a bit rushed. I was definitely hooked but it happened, then they healed and then the book was over. I would’ve loved more exploration of their grief.

All this said, I did enjoy the book and would consider reading more in this series (I am kind of desperate for Lucas or Cayden to get their own story/ies actually - the hurt/comfort potential 👌).

This debut novel for Jessica Ann was an absolute knockout.

The development of the relationship between Sky and Landon was fun to watch. The author did a great job of giving the reader clear vibes and chemistry between the friends. There was some great banter between the secondary characters as well. Once the steam got going, it was FIRE. The tragedy was heartbreaking and could be felt through the page.

* MM Romance
* Hockey player x Nurse
* Online friends to lovers
* Slow burn then spicy!!
* Tragedy and grief

DEBUT NOVEL WHO!?

yall…i devoured this. i am shocked this is jessica ann’s first novel. i’m in love with skylar + landon.

the conflict came late in the book despite the opening prologue kicking off with that. i understand this did not mesh well with some readers but honestly? i totally forgot. i was so wrapped up in what was going on that when it came to the conflict arising i was like “oh yeah! forgot about that.” this is definitely a trust the process moment. but i think it fits so well.

in addition, i’ve also seen remarks on skylar’s verbiage. i’m gonna say it: i think it one hundred percent suits him and his personality. and if you have issue with it, it’s most likely because you don’t understand. there wasn’t even anything totally “out there” or hard to understand. as a 23 year old woman, i didn’t have issue keeping up. idk!

moving on to things i loved…

landon: hellooooo mr “he fell first but i fell harder” oh my lanta. this man’s mouth. his unwavering support of sky. his & leigh’s friendship. landon’s affirmative actions for sky during his struggle were just swoon worthy. most novel’s have a third act break up where one MC pushes the other away and the other MC allows it. landon? he said FUCK. THAT. i love him.

sky: i love mouthy, obnoxious, epitome-of-sunshine boys and skylar is just that. he is so funny, sweet, and expressive. i am a sucker for bilingual MC’s so his cuban roots peeking through were just *mwah*! i loved that not only did we know he was a nurse, but this novel even depicted that job throughout.

favorite quotes:

Sky. Jesus. He’s too fucking beautiful.

Bitch, I’m fucking breathing, but his fucking name is on my shirt! I stood up and flashed his name at him like a fucking fanboy…

Oh fuck, he’s perfect.

Bobbing my eyebrows playfully, I lean forward and bite my lip. “I’ll pop your cherry then. You can taste mine.” His cheeks turn pink, and a laugh bursts forth. “You’re trouble, aren’t you?”

That’s another thing I’ll be adding to my growing list of Adorable Shit Sky Does. It’s doubled since I’ve been here.

wowowowowow! i sincerely hope i am correct on who novel 2 is about but either way, i’m so excited i can’t wait!!! congratulations to this author on the debut of their novel, it was a beautiful story about love, friendship, and hardships.

⭐️: 4.5/5 rounded up!!
🌶️: 1.5/3

~
side note: i adored addy, sav, leigh, & cayden. the found family vibes were strong. hoping we get leigh & cayden’s story next? 🤔😍
~
one last final note…

i didn’t love the way the novel ended BUT i also recognize it leaves an opening for the following books so i will do my best to wait (impatiently) for the books to come!

I love finding new authors. It makes me so happy to see someone finding their passion and it can be seen in this book. You can see the love the author has for these characters while also giving a great level of detail to their world. This is such a sweet and loving MM friends to lovers with great characters you are cheering on to the end. All the side characters were fleshed out and gave purpose to the story while you can see opportunities for their own books.
Sky and Landon were so much fun to read developing into this relationship while also respecting each other. Sky love of sky diving and Landon’s fear of flying was a great combination of this. Sky’s pivotal “hurt” moment was so well written, with a good understanding of what someone in that situation would go through. I loved the way Landon gave him time and took care of him, which just made me fall in love with him.
The inner dialogue is really funny (especially Sky), and the spice is really good but I’d more please (because I’m greedy!).
This is a really good low angst which will suit readers that like to have a cosy book to enjoy.

This was such a wholesome read. I've never read an online friends to lovers romance, so i was really excited when i heard it was going to happen in this book.

Insta Love is hit or miss for me and in this book it's good but sometimes way too cheesy for me. I'm not a big fan of cheesy romance novels, so that was my mistake.

It's still a great book if you want something sweet without a sick plot or complicated story.

DNF’d at 35%

Might possibly come back to this? (Especially as I won a physical copy in a giveaway lollllll. 😬)

I had a few issues with this one.

First, I just couldn’t jive with the characters. They had potential for sure and maybe would’ve found their footing later in the book, but tbh I just wasn’t interested in finding out. I think a lot of it is that I can easily tell when an author puts TOO much of themselves into their characters and that’s a turn off for me. I want them to be fully realized on their own. (With just a litttttle bit of the author in them).

This is definitely more character-driven than plot driven as—at least what I read—hockey seems to be more of a subplot than anything. That was pretty disappointing for me because with sports romances, I generally enjoy it when the sport is part of the plot and is researched thoroughly, etc. Not saying I want sports to be the main plot. Jesus god no. But it shows how much work the author puts into a book when they are thorough with even their subplots.

There was also a lot of telling rather than showing, which is, like, every writing instructor’s first rule. So that always turns me off, too.

I think Jessica Ann has some serious potential and with a few more books under belt, I think she could be great!

👨🏽‍⚕️ Nurse / hockey player
🏒Online Friends to lovers
👨🏽‍⚕️ Hilarious internal monologue
🏒 Skydiving / fear of flying
👨🏽‍⚕️ Secret identity (kind of)

Don't Look Down is Jessica’s debut novel and let me tell you : it couldn't have been any better ! She nailed straight in the a… head 😉

Skylar is an urgent care nurse, he’s sunshine impersonated, always a good joke or innuendo in store, covered in tattoos and an adrenaline junkie.
Landon is a pro hockey player, he's scared to death of flying, he’s a very caring and protective person.

They both play online video games and end up playing against each other one night. They spark straight away, and end up keeping the virtual friendship alive for months. Until they are bound to meet in real life…. But Sky doesn't know who Landon is…. Unbeknown to him, Landon is Sky’s favorite hockey player….

Fear not my friend, this is not a miscommunication story that goes on until 90% … thank god for that!! This secret identity thing is resolved pretty quickly and the story goes on… but you will have to read it to find out. I don't want to give away any spoilers …

“We breathe together. Breathe for each other and with each other. Almost like two broken halves of a whole that was incomplete without its other piece. I didn’t know I was broken, until I found him and he put me back together. I only hope I can complete him like he completes me.”

Let me talk about the characters for a minute. Skylar’s inner monologues were HILARIOUS!!! The drama in his head was so funny, and I laughed out loud so many times.
Landon is caring, fiercely protective of who he loves and fights for what/who he cares about in his life. His friends are his family (hello Leigh 😏) and they protect each other no matter what.

This book made me drunk on life ! It gave me back faith in humanity, and I felt deep feelings! The way Jessica wrote about her characters was so precise and deep that I couldn't help but feel the same things as them…

I can't wait for book 2, and if it is about who I think it is.... it's going to be EPIC! Bring it on!!!

I received a free copy of this book via Passion Author Services and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Whew. I have thoughts.

3.5⭐️ 🌶️🌶️.5/5

This is a hockey romance (kinda? Maybe hockey adjacent). Sky (Skylar) is a nurse and hockey fan. Lucky for him, the guy he’s been gaming with online for the last few months is one of his favorite hockey players… he just doesn’t know it yet.

The suspense leading up to them meeting is sooooooo good. I felt it in my bones. Their friendship and dynamic is so refreshing, even if they both have their heads in the sand about their obvious feelings toward each other.

This book gives us:
🏒 openly bisexual hockey player
🩺 skydiving nurse
🏒 friends to lovers
🩺 hurt/comfort
🏒 the absolute best support system (Annie, Leigh, Addy)

Now, welcome to the good stuff:

This book is loooooooong. That’s not something I normally encounter in debut novels, but this puppy is 400 pages and sometimes you can definitely feel it.

The beginning is interesting. It’s hard to get through but it is worth it for the story. The first 5-10 chapters (they’re fairly short) are a lot of descriptive information that doesn’t really seem relevant given how early the reader is in the book. The information there is necessary, but it does seem to drag.

I will say, if you push through that, not only will it be worth it, but it will make sense why it’s written that way. I’ve seen people say they DNF’d it super early and I think if you give it a bit, it all makes sense and things fall into a nice rhythm.

It’s formatted similarly to a fantasy novel. A bunch of incredibly descriptive info shoved in your face immediately. It takes a minute to catch your bearings.

I really enjoyed this premise and the execution was good for a debut author.
I loved the friendship first dynamic. 😭

There were some plot-holes and unrealistic moments but overall, I had fun. Genuinely. I found myself smiling quite a few times while reading this. Their banter and love was just beautiful. I really hope we get Leigh’s book next. He’s such a good dude.

Anywho, I had fun. I liked it. Give it a chance.
Read it.
Okay bye.

I really liked the premise of this book, but it was a bit off, for me. MM, friends to lovers, sport romance. It clicked all the right boxes, but I didn't click much with the characters, unfortunately.

I liked Landon quite a lot, he's a good guy, incredibly down to earth. With a great support system that was his best friend and teammate, Luc.

Skylar, not so much, he was a bit over the top. Most of the time, he felt a bit of a clichè, the way he spoke, the way he acted. There were times were you could see a much deeper and quiet part of him. And those part about him I enjoyed reading, a lot.

These two together were like a fire though. The spice was there, people. Oh the spice was perfect. But the story felt a bit dragged out, and it made the book too long. In certain cases I enjoyed when things get longer. Bur it felt like years before they met face to face. I was also enjoying the drama with Andrew and I thought it was going one direction when everything changed, crashed and burned, and it took an unexpected turn which I found a bit unnecessary. But that's my opinion and my particular taste.

I received this ARC and these are my honest thoughts.

Well, this is a nice debut!

I'm usually not a friends-to-lovers fan, but this is new hockey series and I don't care what tropes are being explored here.
Landon and Sky's friendship is beautiful from the very beginning though! Both characters are very lovable and cute. NHL player Landon is openly bi, sweet but quite reserved and careful about those who he let's into his life. Sky is just sunshine impersonated, very vivid and with a strong need for adrenaline. Their friendship developing to something more was done really nicely and at this point you can say they are soulmates. They make so cute couple, gah!
And while my mind was settled on a very low angst read, I didn't expect that twist of events. I think it was handled well and maybe I would've liked to things happen even earlier in the book so we could explore all the feelings deeper.

Sometimes the writing style was off for my likings, but I really liked the book nevertheless. Both MCs were great and side characters were very enjoyable. I smell Leigh's book next. Will definitely continue with these series!

I really enjoyed this one! Sky is wonderful. He has such a bright, sunny disposition. He’s caring and kind and so fun. Landon is great too! He’s protective and caring. He knows who he is and what he wants and he’s never embarrassed by that.

I loved to see these two get to know each other anonymously, become friends, and then more. I also love the side characters! A great bff for sky and amazing teammates for Landon. Also Landon’s mom is lovely. I love how everyone was rooting for and supporting them.

I did think Landon’s excuses for not getting with sky were kind of flimsy, but that’s not a big deal. I also felt the storyline with Cayden and his finance wasn’t needed. I enjoyed seeing Landon care for Sky while Sky needed him, but it was just a lot, I think.

Overall I really really enjoyed this book. I’m so excited for the next one!

Notes: 2/5 spice levels, hockey, hockey player/nurse, nurse mc, skydiving mc, amazing female bff, met online, friends to lovers, slow burn, grief

This book was so good, I couldn't put it down! I loved Landon and Sky together, they were just so oblivious in the beginning but when they both, with a little help from their friends, woke up to what they wanted, they were so good together. I was so sucked into the story that I was holding my breath waiting for the tragedy to strike! And when it did, I was really sad but also slightly relieved that it wasn't the things I had been imagining!
Looking forward to reading more in the series, especially if it's about who I think it is!!

This was definitely a slow burn. I don’t think they got together until like 60%, which I don’t really mind. I’m definitely intrigued to read this authors next book. I’m hoping it’s going to be about Luke, Landon‘s teammate. it was a solid hockey book but nothing I’m truthfully going to remember a year from now.

I enjoyed the secret identity twist the book gave us at the beginning of Landon and Sky’s friendship. The fact that they meet over a video game was definitely a new development from other books I’ve read on the genre but I thought the portrayal of grief and mental health was strong in this book.

Amazing author debut MM story ! I love the storyline. I love the banter between the two making characters. And I love how thorough Jessica Ann was with each character. I love how Landon and Sky’s journey to each other unfolds. From strangers, to friends, then lovers. They have an epic love story. A beautiful slow burn. Some parts had me in the edge and wanting more. I can’t wait for a continuation of this story, hopefully! I love the high and lows that they experience with each other but also their support system is beautiful. I felt all the emotions in the story. Love, love, love! Can’t wait for the next book.

….

First and foremost congratulations Jessica on your debut. Before starting this book I knew these characters would be very loving and that is due to the nature of the author. A gentle soul I would call her.

We get a solid friendship build that transformers organically into something more, a super meet-cute, two worlds that collide together and start forming a beautiful bond of friends, a son loving his mom, heartfelt moments, an event and breakdown that changes a lot of lives and an unthinkable gesture that proves someone’s love and devotion.

This book brought me also two characters that I can’t wait to read about - because if they’re next, I’m feral for them. The tropes lining up. Front row center.

So “take the leap and embrace the fall.”

“…but I want those moments with Sky to myself.” // “Apparently, I have zero willpower. His voice compels me to give him whatever he wants. Like a puppet on a string, I am powerless to deny him.” // “How can something be lost if you never had it in the first place?” // “I’m not a good dancer, but he makes me want to try. To match my rhythm to his.” // “His hand is trembling where it’s clasped in mine. I haven’t let him.” // “…I consider myself fearless, but I’m fucking terrified…” // “I know a few tricks to kickstart your heart.” // “He was made to be in my arms. My perfect counterpart.” // “Face down, ass up, Spence.” // “Twelve forty-one.” // “…and everything he needs. Every last piece of me. But I will never give up on him.” // “Sky’s The Limit: Can you come home?” // “Don’t look down, don’t look down, don’t look down…”

ARC review of Don’t Look Down by Jessica Ann

⭐⭐⭐

🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

✨ I received an ARC, and anything shared in this review is solely my opinion! ✨

This book was my first go-to for reading MM sports romance, and the blurb of this debut book really caught my attention enough to request an ARC for it. The premise of the book really sounded interesting, and I was looking forward to diving into it once I received it.

I have to say that the setting of where the two main characters met was something unique for me personally, and this caught my attention instantly. Additionally, the way the prologue was written, I would say, got me thrilled to meet both Sky and Landon when jumping into chapter one. However, I had to read the prologue twice for me to personally get a jump start on the story before diving into this book.

Both Sky and Spencer are two main characters, which, in my opinion, were written in unique ways, and as a reader, I could distinguish them from each other. Though in the first half of the book I did not find a connection with Sky, contrary to the way Jessica wrote Spencer, I felt that I could feel a sense of connection with him the most from the beginning since I, as an individual, go through anxiety situations as well. Therefore, I could relate to what Spencer was saying and going through during situations in the book.

I’d have to point out that I enjoyed the banter that Jessica wrote between Spencer and Sky throughout the duration of the book. There were so many situations that made me laugh out loud. The spice in the book starts off a bit slow; however, as the story progresses, things start to get heated between them. At 60–70%, I then started to feel a connection with Sky as he finally started to show his vulnerability.

In my opinion, the pace of the story starts a bit slowly in the beginning; however, as the story progresses, I feel as though it gets to a place where, as the reader, you get invested in Sky and Spencer’s relationship. I enjoyed the ending of this debut, as at the end, this whole book from beginning to finish from my perspective showed the transformation they went through to finally be together.

I'd like to thank Passion Author Services and Jessica Ann for giving me the opportunity to ARC read this debut! It means the world to me!

“Don’t Look Down” by Jessica Ann was the meet-cute I was craving and it fully delivered! The relationship between Landon and Skylar was truly a pleasure to read… they were the SWEETEST!

Landon is a hot shot hockey player who meets Skylar online playing Call of Duty. Skylar is a nurse who is fully of life and energy and his new friend Landon consistently brings a smile to his already smiling face! While there is some push and pull and a whole lot of “I like him but we can’t” they pull their souls have on each other is so OBVIOUS you could see it from space. Once they meet, the pieces finally fall into place and even through all the denial, their friends push them together and off they go towards their HEA! ☺️ When the worst happens for Sky, Landon does the unthinkable to prove his love and devotion to him. Major swoon vibes!

What I loved most about reading this story was the characters themselves and their blossoming relationship! Landon Spencer is an openly bisexual hockey player (which I love this trope) who is a beast on the ice and a huge love muffin with Skylar. He’s a bit more reserved in comparison to Skylar’s enthusiastic, full of energy, type of personality but Sky brings out the playfulness in him. Skylar in the other hand… WHAT A JOY! I found myself laughing at his little jokes and phrases and I felt like even I was his best friend while reading! He’s a daredevil and a thrill seeker and oh so sexy — well they both are 🫠 Their relationship is easy and easy to read and fall in love with.

Overall, the burn was slow, the steam was hot, the love was precious, and the laughs were endless. I live for a hockey romance and I live for soul mates and this did it for me. I recommend this for all MM readers who are looking for a feel good, steamy, book that’s full of laughs, sexy hockey players, and a connection so strong you’ll smile the entire way through.

Don't Look Down by Jessica Ann is book one in a three book series of interconnected standalones. This MM friends to lovers romance story is about Landon Spencer and Skylar Donovan.

Landon is a hockey player in the NHL and Skylar is a critical care nurse. They meet by chance when gaming online and immediately hit it off. They continue to get to know each other and develop a close friendship. Landon has been burned before, so he is hesitant to let Sky know that he is a professional hockey player. He just so happens to be on Sky's favorite hockey team and one of his favorite players. Landon does go with his gut feeling that Sky is someone important, and decides to meet him in person. Their meet cute is the best. Landon and Sky both feel the chemistry and instant connection but hold back. Landon is in a friends with benefits situation that Skylar feels might be more than Landon is making it out to be. Both Landon and Skylar have such awesome friends, and they are there to help push Landon and Sky to give into their feelings for each other. And when they finally do give in, they are amazing together. Unfortunately tragedy strikes and I could not hold back my tears. Landon was absolutely perfect during such a difficult time, and my heart went out to Sky and everything he was going through.

This story is definitely a slow burn. I appreciate the author introducing us to the characters and getting to see their beautiful friendship develop, but I actually wish things happened faster. For me personally, I would have liked for Landon and Sky to get into their relationship sooner, and that the hurt/comfort would have happened earlier. I was left wanting to see more of Landon and Sky as a happy couple. Overall, I did enjoy reading about Landon and Sky's love story and hope we will see them again in the next book in the series.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
