Insightful, but limited survey that focuses on historical rather than modern developments in the various religious traditions covered. The book is somewhat dated, and the chapter on Marxism really didn't fit. However, this is the closest thing you'll find to a comprehensive monograph offering systematic coverage of the problem of suffering across many religious traditions. I'm using it for a textbook this semester.

Required reading for anyone interested in the nature of religion and role it has played in communities and individuals. Bowker compares and contrasts answers to suffering offered by mainstream religions including, Marxism!

A critical part of my reading and education, this work may be dated, I suppose. It has been a cornerstone work for me.
