Someone is murdering witches in Hollywood. Dr. Vicky, a vet for the stars, stumbles across the bizarre serial killer’s tracks. The only things she inherited from her mother were a single spell and a rare C-Rex cat that can lend her enhanced senses. She has to use these powers to investigate without breaking the council’s rules or tipping off the cute homicide detective. She gets help from a medium friend, an unfaithful ex, and an eccentric family. Fans of Faith Hunter, Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, and Kim Harrison will enjoy this paranormal romp. ,
Scott Rhine wanted to find a job that combined his love of reading with math problem solving, so he studied both short stories and computer languages. As a techno-gypsy, he worked on optimizing some of the fastest and largest supercomputers in the world. A couple of degrees, patents, and children later, at forty-eight, he still didn't know what he wanted to be when he grew up. When his third publication "Doors to Eternity" unexpectedly hit #16 on the Amazon epic fantasy list, he decided to retire from engineering in order to become a full-time author. Humor is a part of every story he writes because people are funny, even when they don't think so. In the real world, something always goes wrong and people have flaws. If you can't laugh at yourself, someone is probably doing it for you. Strong female characters also play a major role in his stories because he's married to a beautiful PhD who can edit, break boards, and use a chainsaw.
Interesting and nerdy read. Loved it. All the scientific facts backing it up and still an engaging plot line. Definitely reads a little more like a video game or a TV show then a typical book, but that’s not a bad thing. I like the characters, although there isn’t a whole lot of character development, this book is heavy on plot.
Dr. Victoria Goode works as a traveling veterinarian serving some of the most recognizable names in L.A. But behind her outward persona, she is a witch of limited power who belongs to a local and well-established coven. Unexpectedly, Vicky’s powers begin to emerge, prompting her to seek out answers from her trusted community. As she increases her understanding of her abilities, a murderer is threatening the lives of her loved ones, and she may be one of the only people who can stop them. This supernatural thriller blends magic with the mundane within the context of the great financial disparities that exist in Los Angeles. Disappointingly, the narrative’s world building is not well constructed, leaving readers feeling as though they missed a significant amount of backstory. If readers are willing to move past the confusing elements of the beginning, however, they will find good writing and intriguing characters that will likely inspire them to continue. The scenes of action and suspense are the strongest, while the romantic moments are weaker, leading to a somewhat unbalanced, though still readable, story. Vicky is the primary focus of the narrative, but other characters’ perspectives are occasionally included, which is easier thanks to the third person approach to the storytelling. Because the beginning is somewhat scattered, it requires some work to build empathy for the characters and interest in the story. Once that happens, though, the stakes become increasingly accessible, and readers will be more inclined to see the mystery through to the end. This book is best suited to adults due to the occasional inclusions of strong language, sex, and violence. It is a decent novel and series starter for readers who appreciate supernatural storytelling.
Paranormal romp is a good way to describe this book. It was fun all the way around. Some of the things bothered me a bit, like the constant mention of sex, but it hurt the story. Just got annoying after a while. I'm a huge fan of contemporary fiction, and this scratches that itch. It's not the witty, gritty storytelling of Jim Butcher, but it has its charms.
This novel is an engrossing mix of mystery and intrigue, with magic subtly interwoven into the setting of fashionable Hollywood. The plot is well-developed and entertaining, the characters are well realized, and the pace is good. This mysterious and fascinating story will hold your attention from the first page to the very last. I can't wait for this equal.
