Every hero in this Kate Bateman series is like “I love her but we’ve been enemies for so long that if I tell her now she won’t believe it so I have to conduct very elaborate tailor-made schemes in order to acclimate her to the idea that I’ve been in love with her since the moment I first saw her but was too young back then to do anything with that information so I’ve just sat and pined like a little tree for ages being very obvious about it and the only one who doesn’t know is her” and I LOVE IT.

This was SO GOOOOD! The hero and heroine bicker and banter and claim to hate each other, but they're secretly both pining after one another. The hero owns a theater and there's a masked phantom that appears during each show and he dares the heroine to figure out who it is. This was short, but I was so invested in the romance and loved how the hero pined so much for the heroine. Loved it!!

The Phantom of Drury Lane is such a perfect historical romance novella from Kate Bateman, inspired by Phantom of the Opera! This is also connected to her Ruthless Rivals series but can definitely stand on its own.
Lucy Montgomery is finally back home in London, after a whirlwind adventure to Brazil and then surviving a shipwreck off Madagascar with her family. She runs into William Arden, Viscount Ware, who tells her about a bet going around of one hundred pounds to whoever unmasks the “Phantom of Drury Lane”. Lucy and William have always kind of been around one another, he was a friend of her brother and their families exist in the same social circles. Lucy and William even shared a kiss a few years ago and both haven’t forgotten, even though they swore to never speak of it. Now Will is back from war, with a scar across his face from Waterloo, and he has a financial stake in the theater as a co-owner. He knows Lucy loves mysteries and adventures, so he tells her he can escort her through the theater as he has a key.
This was just such a perfect novella, I loved every page of it and couldn’t get enough of Lucy and Will together. I loved the Phantom nods and how everything played out in this story. These two obviously have feelings for one another but both think the other isn’t interested. Such a satisfying read! Like I mentioned, this novella does exist in the author’s Ruthless Rivals series, Lucy is the younger sister of Caro Montgomery (who married Max Cavendish in Desert Island Duke).

Delightful Historical-Romance novella by one of the best to ever write in the genre. Kate Bateman is just wonderful and waiting for a new full-length novel is a torture. This short, sexy story will just have to do, for now anyway.

I freaking loved this. It's barely 100 pages, so there were aspects of it that felt a tad rushed. But I had a truly wonderful time with every single one of those pages. There's a hefty dose of mutual pining, some brother's best friend energy, and a little bit of second chance romance. Plus some Phantom of the Opera sprinkled over the top.
Essentially, these two fools kissed once four years ago. They've both been in love with each other since before that but they're both convinced the other thought the kiss was a mistake. Now they're both back in London and Will - instead of using his words like a big boy - has decided that the way to get Lucy to fall for him is to request her assistance in revealing the identity of the masked Ghost/Phantom using a box in his theatre.
It was ridiculous in the best way and I giggled nonstop through this. Kate Bateman never disappoints!

His mouth barely left hers. He kissed her with all the pent-up longing in his soul, trying to make up for all the times he'd awoken without her, alone and aching.

I really love Kate's writing as she is a master at creating such a beautiful connection between two characters, even in a shorter novella. Both Will and Lucy have loved each other from afar for so long, but after a disastrous yet breathtaking first kiss, they have danced around each other and their private longing. However when Lucy finally arrives back in London after a trip around the world, Arden is finally willing to lay his feelings bear in order to secure his happiness and Lucy's hand. He sees his opportunity by pretending to be a Phantom in his opera house and appealing to Lucy's curious nature. I loved watching Lucy and Will finally connect and allow their feelings for each other bloom into something beautiful at last. This was such a fantastic novella, and I look forward to more of the Drury Lane books🖤

After surviving a shipwreck off the coast of Madagascar, Lucy Montgomery can handle anything that comes her way now that she's back in London. Unfortunately one of the first people she runs into is Will Arden, her nemesis. The kiss they shared five years ago and the humiliating rejection that followed ensured Lucy's goal to avoid Will as much as possible. But when he challenges her to uncover the identity of the mysterious Phantom of Drury Lane, Lucy can't say no.
The premise of The Phantom of Drury Lane sounded really fun plus I've enjoyed the other books I've read in the Ruthless Rivals series so I was looking forward to picking this one up. The chemistry between Lucy and Will was fantastic from the start and I loved how they both secretly had feelings for the other. The banter between them is amazing and I really enjoyed watching their connection grow throughout the book. They both have a different view about what happened between them five years ago and I was happy when they were finally able to work through that. The phantom plot was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the two working together to uncover his identity. The reveal of his identity was great and I liked how that plot was wrapped up.
Overall The Phantom of Drury Lane was an amazing read and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for a quick historical romance to pick up.

I cannot resist the “rivals who are hot for each other” pairing that Kate Bateman writes so well, the energy is always magnetic!
I knew I’d like this novella from the first scene, when Lucy spots Will making a beeline for her at the ball, and she’s miffed that his battle scar has made him even more annoyingly handsome.
111 pages of pure delight - I read the entire thing with a giddy smile. 😍

Two knuckleheads that are secretly in love with each other argue and banter while solving the mystery all of London’s asking: Who’s the mysterious phantom of Drury Lane?
This was so cute! Batsman’s writing style really works for me. It’s lighthearted with enough drama to keep it from moving too slowly and some really loveable characters that need a bit of a shove to get together. I think secret pining is her niche and she knows how to do it well!
A super fun novella as Lucy and Will try to solve the mystery of the shadowy figure haunting Will’s theater while also being dummies that are both in love and don’t know how to tell each other. Fear of rejection, amiright? Plus there’s they’re sex. Who doesn’t love theater sex? Go forth.

This is my 14th books by Kate Bateman. I keep notes on all my authors and this is what I wrote about Kate. Really love her writing. Sex is hotly written. Her stories are long, very detailed and not typical ton books. More intrigue, suspense, spies, etc. Stories are a bit heavier read. Intricate detailing but not over nonsense.
With all that being said, Lucy and Arden were great to read. I loved their personalities. Unfortunately, since it's an anthology it's a bit short but she still managed to get good depth. I am really loving this series.

My teen self is having a blast with this basically PTO fanfic. Did the side knowledge of our heroine getting shipwrecked in Madagascar baffle me as a character point? A little yeah. Was our hero the sweetest? Also yeah. The epilogue was a cute send off to the phantom and made me want to giggle in delight.

Lucy and Will have Bateman’s trademark witty banter and sizzling chemistry. I was gifted this novella by a good friend of mine, and I’m so thankful for it. Don’t let its novella length fool you;, it has the plot and character development of a full-length novel. I can’t wait for the next book in the saga of these two families!

3.75 rounded up. Sweet, sexy, and short. Fun addition to the series. Nothing out of the ordinary, but Kate Bateman is a solid writer, so the execution works, even though the MMC's character arc is pretty sudden. (You might want to read the books in her current series before this novella if you want more background on the feud between the main characters' families.)

Classic Bateman 'not-really-enemies' to lovers trope. Was a bit worried abt the fake Phantom (this feels like cheating?) but Bateman totally pulled it off. Middle to end was super cute! Absolutely loved it when heroine Lucy got the upper hand!

This book was about as surprising as a mime asking for applause. Our heroine, has the sleuthing skills of a particularly curious badger, tasked by the ever-so-slightly dramatic Hero (think masks and brooding) to unearth the mystery haunting the local theatre.
The "mystery," however, was about as hidden as a clown car in a library. We, the discerning readers, are clued into the Hero's phantom charade from page three. Let's just say his disguise work rivaled a toddler's attempt at hide-and-seek behind a sheer curtain.
Heroine spends the entire novel chasing red herrings that even a goldfish could dodge. The Hero reveals themself with all the subtlety of a fog horn, leaving heroine looking more confused than a mime at a magic show.
What. A. Drag.
The plot twists were about as sharp as week-old bread, and the will-they-won't-they tension between main characters felt more like a polite disagreement over which shade of beige is most beige.
So, should you read it?
Only if you enjoy watching paint dry while listening to someone narrate the drying process in monotone. There are more thrills to be found alphabetizing your spice rack.
However, if you need a literary equivalent of white noise to lull you to sleep, this might be your jam. Just don't expect fireworks, because all you're getting is a damp squib.

This was a highly entertaining novella. I am a huge fan of Kate's stories and I loved seeing another of the Montgomery sisters front and center. I loved the enemies to lovers trope between Lucy and Will. The hidden desires they each had for each other. Will is a friend of Lucy's older brother so throw that into the mix as well.
The concept of Lucy trying to discover the identity of the Phantom of the theater was so fun! I read this story in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. I enjoyed it very much.
I'm excited to read the other stories in this series, but mostly I'm excited to see what Kate will be bringing us next for the Montgomery sisters.

Short, sweet novella
This is a cute addition to the series , by various authors , The Scandals and Scoundrels of Drury Lane.
If you've read anything by Kate, you know she does an excellent example of enemies to lovers, brother's best friends little sister etc..the banter is always good and she is able to communicate desire and longing in both characters so the reader is ready to experience their inevitable HEA when it occurs.
This is another one of the Montgomery-Arden clashes and it is wonderful.

This was a quick and enjoyable novella. I can’t say that I felt terribly invested in the plot, but I really liked the main characters. I also really loved how well Kate Bateman built a vision of London and specifically of the theater where most of the book takes place. In some ways, my favorite part of the book was the theater with all its hidden passageways and secret doors. The author’s steamy scenes are open door and well done 🔥
I recommend this novella for a quick and enjoyable read. 💘

In some ways, my favorite part of the book was the theater with all its hidden passageways and secret doors. The author’s steamy scenes are open door and well done 🔥
I recommend this novella for a quick and enjoyable read. 💘

I really loved this one! This one has Phantom of the Opera vibes! For a novella this also had just the right amount of points in a story I look for and was gushing the whole time. Scarred Will who came home from the war challenges Lucy who just got back from Madagascar to find out who the masked man is at the theater. She accepts. They also both loved each other but neither has been the first one to say it first. I just loved the push and pull between the two characters from their past and current meetings. I recommend this one.
