Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis

Rate this book
There is growing interest world wide in the field of mind-body medicine and the effect which the natural energy forceswithin the body play in the maintenance of normal health and wellbeing. This in turn has led to interest in how these energies or forces may be channelled to assist in healing and restoration to health. This book, written by a well known scientist with a degree in biophysics and a PhD in biology, brings together for the first time evidence from a wide range of disciplines which is beginning to provide an acceptable explanation for the energetic exchanges that take place in all therapies Energy Medicine provides an exciting and challenging read for anyone who may be interested in or curious about the therapeutic aspects of energy. It provides a stimulus to discussion among both the sceptics and those who are already convinced of the healing potential of body energy. Written by a respected scientist who adds respectability to what otherwise might seem to be New Age theories Brings together material which previously has been unpublished or hard to come by, especially for clinicians

This book is basically a small textbook disguised as a 350-page paperback. It took me over a month to read diligently through it all, but as an alternative health practitioner (chiropractor) I stand by its worth.

Oschman addresses both the scientific research and philosophical principles of science in order to argue for a paradigm shift in medicine that will address the movement of energy into and out of our bodies and how that affects our biology and our health. He argues that when you marry the biophysics of energy medicine with the biochemistry of today’s mainstream medicine, you get a complete picture of health and illness.

The author is not the clearest writer, as is often the case in scientific writing, so I had to work extra hard to understand what he was saying, but I learned a ton. For anyone who takes care of patients, this is more than a compelling read—it is the future of medicine.

heady book, with validating peer reviewed studies that could explain why energy medicine, from chiropractic, acupuncture to Reiki and polarity therapy could work. Not worth owning, but great to review and restore our faith in laying on of hands healing.

WHEW! Now that was a difficult book to read...although the parts I could understand were quite interesting! Looking for my next CST-oriented book to read.

James Oschman spared no time and effort writing this book. His book is a true testament of his amazingly huge knowledge of the subject.
I must admit that I couldn't always follow that biochemistry in the book since I'm an engineer, but the physics part was more then interesting and easy to follow.
Oschman is truly passionate about the subject, and you can feel that all the way. I couldn't help myself to share this passion, and let others around me taste that as well.
The book is well structured, starting with some science history and then gradually describing topics like electromagnetic field measurement, energy circuits in our bodies, energy medicine, healing by touch and movement, acupuncture, essential oils, all supported by an insane number of references.
It was also nice to have practical tips for all of us, who wish to help nature to do its job, by letting our body heal itself in a more effective way. The book is especially relevant for me, since I'm working on a diagnostic device based on the electromagnetic fields of the human body.
The book isn't cheap or short, but you will not regret reading it!

I read this out of sentimentality. My mother read this text in grad school and was about to donate it. Fascinated by physics and overwhelmed with curiosity, I snatched it from the donate pile. To my delight it contained a leaflet of notes she took whilst reading in addition to five or so highlighted lines throughout the book.

OK, enough about the sentimental stuff. Oschman took serious diligence in notifying the reader of the differences between verified, proven facts versus concepts that required further testing and research to be considered such. An incredibly trust-provoking bond between author and reader. Technical terms are introduced with great adequacy, creating familiarity where there may have been little-to-none prior. Diagrams and illustrations bring further ease in understanding and are frequently used to tie together related as well as separate-but-parallel processes. It reveals a potent intersection of biology, medicine and energy.

Very interesting material. The living matrix of connective tissue and rapid transmittal of information (faster than the random movement and exchange of proteins within the cell and intracellular medium. The effectiveness of very low frequency electricity...can be harmful or beneficial. Intriguing: the chapter on grounding (earthing) and marine plasma.

Oschman's _Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis_ delivers nicely on its title, and it's a fascinating, frustrating read. It is frustrating on one hand because the research is so incomplete in some areas -- so much we don't yet know. It is frustrating on the other hand because so much of the medical establishment has woodenly refused to acknowledge the facts that are painfully well-established, presumably for fear of being associated with quacks.
But it turns out that on some issues, the so-called quacks were right all along. It has taken the scientific establishment a century or so to invent the instruments needed to measure what's happening, but the clinicians of 100 years ago already knew the treatments were effective.
We are starting to figure out why.

I enjoyed and needed this book at the time I read it. The "scientific" aspects of energy medicine were all but lost in the mire of personalized ideologies and myth surrounding practices of energy sharing at the time. They still are for the most part. This book helped in the grounding of some of the modalities, the dispelling of others, and gave me a basis to begin differentiating the two with something more than my "gut." Worth the effort to push thru the "research" format to get to the gems beneath.

This book is a must-read for any intelligent person who cares about health. It, and several other books, is changing the way I understand how our bodies work. Oschman gives the evidence for the power of frequency oscillations in shaping our health in an objective way; he has no personal agenda he is pushing. It is radical and revolutionary.

Good to know the wonderful universe.

Learned about important concepts to earthing, essential oils, reiki, qi-gong, the important medium that is water.
Everything leads back the Nature.

It's a little thick so far, but I've heard him speak and he was electric, so I'm hoping this book can back me up a little.

Detailed historic and scientific basis for proof energy healing works - not that I had any doubts. A call to researchers to consider new possibilities.
