I'll admit, I'm not the greatest expert in Tarot readings, but they fascinate me. The trouble is, any book I've come across in the past has riddles in their meanings or ominous predictions that leave a sense of nervousness when trying to find other 'lighter' meanings.

But there was none of that in Conversations with the Tarot. Maria DeBlassie perfectly blends poetry, some magic and positivity into each Tarot card reading—even ones that are usually considered bad, or even evil, omens. DeBlassie brings a lightness to the decks that are stereotyped as ominous or witchy.

Conversations with the Tarot is a must-read for anyone interested in poetry, the magic of the deck or who just wants a positive book.

I wish this work was around when I first began studying tarot! DeBlassie takes the reader on a wonderfully honest and enlightening journey where she pulls cards every Tuesday, documenting her pulls and how they reflect on her own life.

This book is absolutely perfect for people who are both experienced and new to tarot! We get to learn about the cards in an open, ambiguous, and informative way, all while understanding the personal impacts they have on our author.

The personal touches I loved! It shows readers the tarot in action and is perfect for our beginner witches!

The poems that accompanied every card, however, were my favourite aspect to this book! I absolutely adored this touch. It gave some what of a brief overview of the card whilst also allowing the reader to apply it to their own life and experiences.

I just wish it covered the entire deck and the reverse cards also! Maybe a sequel.. 😉

An absolutely wonderful, fun, and educational read on the wonderful world of tarot!!

Expect the unexpected is what I have learnt from the bruja Maria DeBlassie. This interesting and insightful book gives a unique perspective on the arcana of the Tarot cards.
Conversations with the Tarot is an inspiring tool to teach readers how to read tarot cards told in a lyrical prose. Maria shares their meaning and her thoughts and musings that underlies the Tarot. She shares her meditations, her spiritual journey and transformation of oneself in a holistic way.
It is her hope that it will give each reader to open up thought, to inspire, to open oneself to magic, to new beginnings and possibilities and so, so much more.
Maria sharing her wisdom and knowledge has made me pull my cards from their purple silken wraps and see them with fresh eyes and get back to my witchy roots.

I first heard about this book from its appearance on my NetGalley account. While I did initially want to read this as an arc, the copy there was so scrambled, it was unreadable. Which was a huge disappointment since I was loving the proposed approach to reading about the Tarot. Imagine my joy when I saw that this was already published on Kindle Unlimited. I snatched it up immediately, and it did not disappoint again.

I loved the 78 word stories that accompanied each card, most of which were very insightful and personal. But I really enjoyed the author's insights following each story about the card in question. Whether you're new to reading Tarot, in the middle of learning, or an old-timer, I still recommend this read. It resonated so deeply with me.

This was a rather new and fresh take on working with and interpreting Tarot Cards.
The first time I 'laid my Eyes upon' the Cover, it gave in combination with the Title to me the feeling of old friends meeting over a cup of Tea, and I thought it fitting.

The Author laid bare a journey she went through with her Cards. Her Tarot Tuesday would reveal to her AND us, the reader, what may lie ahead.
She also explained the meaning of each Card with the REVERSED meanings, too.
An absolute Plus in my Book, tbh.

For me a 3.9 Rating which I will upgrade to a 4 Rating on GR.

Despite my limited knowledge of tarot, I found this book to be an invaluable resource that deepened my understanding of each card and its significance. The inclusion of short poems to accompany each card adds a layer of depth and beauty to the book.

Conversations with the Tarot is my first book by author Maria DeBlassie. I have been studying tarot off and on for about 20 years and have collected over 70 decks and numerous books. It was refreshing to see a different approach to learning tarot. This isn’t your basic study guide or how-to book.

Maria’s approach is a gentle, more relaxed way to learn each card. This book is formatted through her own study of tarot, like a journal of each card she pulled. She would write a 78-word poem about each card and then give an insight into the imagery and meaning as it spoke to her. She encourages you to explore how you enjoy reading tarot; what resonates with you the most. For example, do you enjoy reading the reversals of the cards? Many people only enjoy reading the upright version of the card. Do you enjoy a single-card pull or maybe a three-card spread? She encourages you not to be so rigid with your interpretations and explore what the card’s imagery means to you and how you interpret it.

She also urges you to be gentle and respectful with the cards. She relates them to her familiar, a black cat, who does not like to be manhandled or be forced to do anything. You must have a healthy respect for the cards and develop a rapport with them. Make reading the cards part of your daily rituals, like drinking a cup of coffee and doing yoga. Also, try not to ask direct questions over and over again. Nagging the cards will result in not getting the answer you want. Shuffle the cards, pull, and sit with the card for a while. Really reflect on its meaning and what it's trying to tell you.

I loved her caring and respectful approach to learning. So many people, like myself, want instant gratification, but we aren’t doing ourselves any favors. We must slow down, develop a relationship with our deck and explore the symbolism of each card. Choosing a deck that resonates with you is essential. One of my favorite decks is the Light Seer’s Tarot because the imagery and diversity of the cards are fantastic. They put me at ease. You don’t have to wait to be gifted your first deck. I would definitely check out her book and try her approach.

“The tarot has become such a mundane part of my life . . . that it’s magical.” Thus begins DeBlassie’s sophomore book, out now from Kitchen Witch Press. In its pages, the award-winning writer, educator, and brujeria practitioner shares seventy-eight prose poems, each seventy-eight words long, related to where she was in her life when she pulled each of the seventy-eight cards in the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck. The prose poems are accompanied by her insights into what the card meant to her at the time, along with some observations about what the cards generally mean.

The poems in CONVERSATIONS WITH THE TAROT are gorgeous, with regular themes of nature, grounding, the planting of seeds, and the subversion of expectations. Take this from the Hanged Man entry, which literally finds the reader, along with the titular figure, strung up by their feet: “Did the moon always shine / so when my feet were planted in the earth? . . . Did I always have these wings?”

I also learned a bit that will inform my practice. (I’ve been pulling tarot on the new and full moon for years now, and I still struggled to know without looking it up what the numbers in the minor arcana mean. Thanks for the lessons on fives and tens, Maria!)

For all its shining points, I do believe this book is meant to be read meditatively, a little bit at a time. Reading multiple entries back to back began to feel repetitive. I also wish there were poems for both the reversed and upright iterations of each card, which could have created an interesting study in contrasts and spectra. I understood from DeBlassie’s introduction that this is not meant to be a how-to-read tarot book, but because of the general tone of some of the insight passages, it was hard not to fall into those expectations.

I don’t think these phenomena will impact your reading, though, if you interact with CONVERSATIONS WITH THE TAROT as intended—as a form of bibliomancy, opening up to a random poem and meditating on its meaning with your morning coffee, bringing a bit of mundane magic into your own life.

I was gifted this book by the author, the review is my own honest opinion!

Synchronicity is mentioned a lot in this book, and I have to also mention it in this review because this book landed in my hands at the perfect time. I was dabbling with Tarot, rolling around with the idea to get more serious in learning and even starting my own daily tarot journal to further my journey. Which is exactly what DeBlassie was doing here, drawing Tarot every Tuesday to write not only lovely poetry for each one but insights to each until all 78 cards were complete. I love synchronicity, I've been seeing it more and more the more I open my eye to the Universe and my dive into Tarot.

I knew we were going to mesh well after reading through her introduction and seeing we both believe the same things, especially when it comes to Tarot. I especially loved her suggestion that you could treat this book like the tarot deck and open to random pages, for a daily dose of insight from whatever card you turned to. That's such a neat way to read this and I wouldn't have thought about it as an option if it wasn't for this suggestion in the introduction! Now that I've read it in its entirety, I might go back and do that.

DeBlassie's poetry and even the poetic way she writes her insights is both beautiful and eye opening, learning nuanced meanings behind each card that I haven't yet considered as an interpretation. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Tarot, even if not as a reader but an appreciator of the practice and a lover of poetry. Or perhaps someone who would appreciate and learn from the good philosophical lessons she takes away from each card, as Tarot is a teacher when it comes to life lessons - if you listen to them that is.

This isn't a how to, but she does give helpful tips and recommends a lot of helpful books that she learned from while writing this in the conclusion that I will be adding to my reading list to further dive into Tarot for myself!

This book shares the author's unique perspective on Tarot and has similar ideologies to her book "Practically Pagan - An Alternative Guide to Magical Living." Both books help you to see that there is magic in everyday things such as books or cards and you can take what comfort and healing you want or can use from them. She stated in Practically Pagan, "that magic isn't the hocus pocus everyone thinks it is, but rather a way of getting to know yourself." I love that thought, and how, in this book, "Conversations with the Tarot", she shows how she draws from the cards along with her interpretations of them. She encourages the reader to not be so rigid and just have a set in stone meaning for each card, but to rather study them, respect them, and learn them in your own way. Her poems for each card were also very creative and gave you a more personal insight into each card, instead of the typical, this card means this and you need to do this course book style of writing that we often see with learning tarot books. This was such an easy-flowing yet informative way to learn and delve deeper into tarot.

I'm a fan of paranormal books and picked this book up after I read her "Practically Pagan - An Alternative Guide to Magical Living." I loved learning a little more about magic in that book and thought it would be interesting to learn about tarot. Being a Christian and reading books of this nature, I have been criticized, but I enjoy learning how different people believe and practice those beliefs in their lives. It is interesting to see different perspectives on the world and to venture out of your comfort zone to see how others view the world and things in it. So don't be afraid to learn about others' experiences through creative books like this one.

I adore Tarot cards. I love how beautiful some sets can be, and I love how introspective a session with them can be. Despite my love of them, I have very little experience actually reading the cards, and most websites and included leaflets are very vague and piecemeal. That's where Maria DeBlassie comes in.

Having previously read Weep, Woman, Weep and loved it, I knew I could trust DeBlassie's interpretation of the cards. Not only did Conversations with the Tarot help me learn more about the cards themselves, but it also helped me with learning to embrace a slow life (one of my goals for this year), and feeding my creativity. I've been dipping in and out of the book since I got it, and it's a brilliant start to the morning with a nice cup of tea and a crumpet.

The book is a series of microfiction entries based on a card drawn totally at random followed by an 'insight' into what DeBlassie interpreted and felt when she saw the card. Each story is exactly 78 words and reads very much like poetry as well as simply microfiction. There is so much imagery and life lessons packed into these tiny stories and a lot of them are pretty powerful to read. The insights are little windows into DeBlassie's life, and are full of ways to interpret the cards, both reversed and upright.

I've learnt a lot about writing and creativity from both the stories and the insights, and I'm thinking about adopting the weekly card draw and meditation practice for myself. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about themselves or how to get more out of the creative process, or is just interested in Tarot cards as a whole.

Upon reading the prologue, I realized this is not a book where you must own a deck of cards or be fluent in the use or meanings. The reader and audience can be as novice as just being curious about the tarot or what the author has to say. I felt such an intense connection, already, just at the prologue, and I realized that my tarot had been speaking to me prior to this book coming into my orbit. The synchronicities within the text and my daily life surely proved one of the author’s messages – the mundane is magic!

Each card was pulled randomly over the course of two and a half years, revealing each meaning and interpretation that the 78-card deck wanted the author to know, feel, and meditate on. Under the spells that read as beautifully as poetry, are the author’s insights on this card, the meaning and the conversation. The insights show the budding and beautiful relationship the author has begun with each card and the journey she went on and is still on. The insights were particularly helpful for me, as I am new to tarot, an oracle-card kind of gal until now. This book is not a boring, in order, “here is what this card means” book, this is a “follow your own intuition, listen to your cards not other people” book. The author shares the symbolism and its connections to the world we live in, ultimately showing that magic is real.

I recommend this book to all curious about the tarot, seasoned and novice readers, anyone that wants to know more and has a dislike for the traditional guides, as I do. This book is a five-star read for me and I look forward to reading many more works by this author.

Tarot cards have always been part of my life and I have never looked at them as something evil or dark. It is quite the opposite. For me, they are a form of inspiration and a tool for self care. I can also appreciate how reading tarot cards is a very personal thing to each individual.

What moved me with this particular tarot book was the author's explanation about their own personal use of tarot cards. It was the author's approach and the feeling of talking with a friend. What the tarot means to them and the heartfelt insights for each card. This approach felt real to me, something I could actually apply to my own life.

It feels the world around us has changed and is changing daily since covid. The author addresses this. I felt a close connection to everything I was reading. This book really opened me up to a new way to look at my tarot cards. It also offers a brighter way to envision these times that can feel so bleak.

Conversations with the Tarot has a gentle and welcoming tone that kept me engaged while also teaching me something about tarot. The author makes it clear they are sharing their experience, not instructing. That felt really good and comforting to me. That concept also allowed me breathing room to work with my own personal take on tarot.

Due to lack of space and costs, I usually buy the kindle edition first and then if I really want the book for my collection, I will purchase the book. That is what I'm doing with this title. This book is beautifully written. Easy to enjoy and understand. One I absolutely want to have on hand to work with daily.

Conversations with Tarot is so much more than your basic how-to book on learning to read Tarot cards. In this book the author not only shows the reader how to read the cards but also discusses how she reads the cards every day and how they help to guide her. It is part magic and part divine inspiration that help to guide her. I loved how the author explains that a deck of Tarot cards may speak to you, in a sense and that the deck meant for you will come to you when the time is right. I have had my Tarot cards read to me in the past and have always been a bit intrigued by them. However, I was uncertain what each card meant or how one even begins to read the card that is drawn. This book enlightened me, and I learned that there are different types of decks of Tarot cards. Through this book I learned what each card means when that card is drawn and the symbolism behind the card. I also learned that the process of reading Tarot cards involves the formation of a special relationship or bond with your deck of cards. That it is more in-depth than just flipping the card over and describing what the symbol on the card means. I found this book very interesting and loved how the author uses a combination of stories, messages, and musings to explain the Tarot cards and how they can help guide you. This is a book that I will be reading repeatedly and intend to keep as a handy reference. I highly recommend this book!

A book about tarot reading for personal use and as a source of hope.

Tarot is Not Familiar to Me
I have never read tarot cards or had a reading with them. So, I’m very unfamiliar with how it works. However, I’ve always found spirituality and religion very interesting and enjoy learning more.

Maria DeBlassie does an excellent job explaining each card through a poem followed by an insight into what each card means to her.

Insights
She promotes positivity in each insight. It’s as if each tarot card is a guide to growth and understanding of self. She often explains how pulling a card in the morning encourages her to take care of herself.

An example is ‘The King of Wands Reversed’. She interprets this card as one that asks her to stay positive despite occasional self-doubt.

Another example is ‘The Five of Cups Upright’. It tells her to let go of what you can’t fix and look toward the abundance within your grasp.

A Source of Hope
She presents tarot reading as a source of hope. She dares us to trust our inner compass and intuition.

While I don’t believe tarot reading will be part of my life, I did find this book fascinating. I appreciate the understanding that I’ve gained from reading ‘Conversations With Tarot’.

Conversations with the Tarot is a wonderful read for both the skilled tarot practitioner and the novice. Dr. Maria DeBlassie leads the reader through the tarot with a sense of charm and curiosity, inspiring them to do their own self-reflection. She interweaves the reading of each card with personal story, providing a landscape of divine magic during contemporary times.

The insights after each card pull are my favorite parts of the book. It’s like taking a peek into the innermost thoughts of the author during any particular time. What she was feeling, thinking, and what the card meant to her at that moment. The feelings of Imposter Syndrome and the unknown early days of the pandemic are all things I resonated with. DeBlassie perfectly blends quiet introspection of the Tarot with the busyness and chaos of everyday life.

This book takes you on a journey of the mysterious and the mundane, revealing the thread that connects them. And much like a trusted friend, the tarot cards will listen and provide insight but won’t give you all the answers. The author hopes to inspire the reader to explore the world of tarot and to simply embrace the everyday magic.

I found this a really interesting book to read, i wasn't sure what to expect I think I was anticipating it being another this is what the cards mean kind of book. But it really wasn't and I liked that it was a bit different. I think the pull-out of one card a week for 78 weeks is a really different way to connect with the tarot cards and I think I might even give it a try. The author suggested that you don't need to read this from cover to cover and maybe flick through the pages and see which card you end up on to answer questions, but I was reading this as a digital book so did a variation of that. I read the first few cards she pulled and then flicked through until a card caught my attention for this read-through, I just read the ones that drew my attention.
I really loved the insights from the author, don't get me wrong the poetry/story was nice but the insights are what I kind of honed into. It's a brilliantly written book, and I thoroughly enjoyed making my way through it. And we got some fantastic recommendations in the conclusion, I've got a new podcast to tune into!
If Tarot is something that interests you, this might be a good book to dip into.

Conversations with the Tarot: Bewitching Meditations on Reading the Cards by Maria DeBlassie shares her love of Tarot cards, giving us insights and a beginners guide to exploring the Tarot for ourselves.
She has woven together 78 poems, one for each card in the deck- along with witchy insights, musings, how to read the cards, stories and messages to inspire us to begin meditating on our own decks and adding a little Tarot wisdom to our lives.
Having read Ms. DeBlassie other books I can see how this build on what she has already shared/taught us about creating our own ‘magic’ in our lives, to inspire us to design richer, fulfilling, and more meaningful lives.
The author always produces an intriguing read that gives me plenty to ponder by sharing through her own experiences, providing lessons, messages, and interesting insights.
Well worth the read, especially if you are drawn to the Tarot, Wicca, Bruja, meditation, or new age/age-old spirituality.

I really like this author's work so I was delighted to receive an e-copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher.

The book introduces the author's 78 word story and accompanying insight on each card pulled weekly. And that's it! It's very simple, illustrated by cards from the Rider Waite Smith deck and with a brief introduction and conclusion.

But I think it is a very valuable addition to any tarot library. As soon as I started to read I decided to do a 'Tarot Tuesday' pull as part of my own practice and I find that it really focusses on the essence of each card and adds a different dimension to my understanding. I have particularly liked writing my own story and insights and comparing them to the author's for the same card. That has been very insightful.

The only thing I would have preferred would be for the stories to be presented in suit and number order rather than in the order the author pulled the cards, but that's really because it would have made it easier to find them!

This book was so magical and mystical and I absolutely loved it! Such a delightful read that delves into the ambiguousness of Tarot and what the cards mean in a beautiful blend of poetry, positive interpretations, and a touch of the author’s personal experience with each card.

There’s a beauty in Tarot that I feel few fail to see and I think the author really captured the essence in deciphering the cards based off of not only their very generalized meaning but by incorporating your current life circumstances because that’s really what it is. You let the cards speak to you while letting your soul speak as well. A really well written book in my opinion. The poetic pieces she wrote for each card were beautiful and full of meaning. This was a truly wonderful read that would be perfect for anyone interested in Tarot reading whether experienced or not.

I was extremely excited to read this book from the moment I read the title. If you were ever curious about Tarot or simply wanting to see how someone’s path may differ from other tarot readers, this is the book for you.

In this unique book, I thoroughly enjoyed how the author chose to describe each card and their placement, along with her personal insights based upon her experiences and knowledge gained over the years.

To top off an even more epic examination of the art of tarot, the author provides a comprehensive conclusion for the readers to learn a bit more about the craft and her love of the process before wrapping it up.

I enjoyed reading this and appreciated the author’s honesty regarding her need to continue the ongoing learning process.

I’m thankful to have come across this book and the opportunity to learn about something that has piqued my interest for many years.

Wow! Another amazing book by my favorite author! I found it super helpful! Maria DeBlassie knows exactly how to speak to your soul. I felt every word she said and everything between the lines that she didn’t! It is amazing how much everyday magic is in our lives at any moment! Conversations With The Tarot among her other books have been exactly what I needed to hear exactly when I needed it. From someone who has always had an affinity for tarot and other things that people find “weird”, thank you. When I read your books I actually feel like someone understands me and that is a rarity! I will treasure this book and use it frequently in my own divination’s and readings! I highly recommend this book if you are interested in tarot or just beautiful soul reaching poetry! I beg you to give this book a try! I can’t wait to discover the next amazing book by Maria DeBlassie!

I was inspired by DeBlassie's writings to not only continue my journey with the Tarot, but to pick it back up. I've always been interested in what many consider to be the "occult" or "dark" or "magical" and I've always viewed those interests as just part of my world and who I am. When I was first introduced to DeBlassie's writings, I was so comforted because I finally felt like I found someone who thought very similarly to me and felt the way I did about things. I really love the way DeBlassie writes...I always feel as those she can sense what I'm needing to hear and is able to effectively communicate that and put it to paper. I enjoy her prose and poetry as well as her straightforwardness and realness. I love her unique take on various aspects and the Tarot is no different. If you are at all interested in the Tarot, please pick up this book and just have a looksee. It's easy to read and extremely informative.

Conversations with the Tarot was a great descriptive book for someone trying to get into tarot or for someone who has been dabbling for some time. The author nicely breaks down the meaning of each card. After she tells you about the card, she provides a chapter on insight into that card. What I like is that she, at times, used personal stories to explain the insight. She also gives multiple possible meanings depending on what is happening in that person’s life. As a person who has dabbled in tarot for many years, I find it hard to remember each card or I have a hard time really grasping the meaning with the mundane description that sometimes comes with the cards. This book gave me a better understanding to those cards, plus her personal touch on the meaning of the cards helped me put a personal touch to the reading. When I can combine the two ideas together I tend to get more out of the reading, itself. I will definitely revert back to this book when doing tarot in the future.

Conversations with Tarot: Bewitching Meditations on Reading the Cards by Maria DeBlassie is my third experience reading from this amazing author and she never disappoints me, no matter the topic!

In this particular book, Maria takes us into the mystic world of using tarot, but shows us that there is so much more to tarot than simply understanding the meaning of each card. To really use the cards, you need to have a deeper communication built with each one and in this book we are guided by the author on how she does exactly that. DeBlassie knows how to turn all of her writing into a magical experience for her reader, but in a way that can be easily understood by any person new to the practice. I highly recommend for anyone interested in a different sort of guide to the depths of tarot, but also to experience this author I have come to adore.

As ever, Maria DeBlassie has crafted exquisitely simple magic. As much as I wish I had this insight when I 1st discovered Tarot , finding it at this time in my life now has been a delightful synchronisity . For me, the only thing missing is that there isn't an upright AND reversed meeting with all the cards, but I do understand why. The wisdom in these words resonates deeply, & I recognized my own connection to Tarot in this book. There was so much of myself & my connection that I felt conflicted about, & reading this soothed my soul. Acceptance radiates from the pages & encourages you to embrace your own journey with an open heart. The writing is lovely & I wish more people spoke this way tbh. Strong in her gentleness, powerful in her wisdom, & magical in her existence, Maria DeBlassie is a true gem. Encountering her is the universe giving you a gift.

I’ve always had an interest in Tarot and when I first got into readings, I had heard so many different things, I wish I had a book like this to read first. I found the author’s perspective refreshing, and I found it interesting to compare my own experiences with theirs. Even reading this after having my own experiences and forming my own views, I still found this incredibly insightful and useful.
The poetry was brilliant – a poem for each card in the deck (78). It fits so well and I thought it was a touch of brilliance.

I’ve previously read another book by this author which I absolutely loved and shaped much of my recent views on magical living so I knew this would be the book for me. I love the author’s perspectives and openness to differences. This book cements that I will continue to love them and seek out their writings.

I have read quite a few books by this author, and none of them disappoint! This one is slightly different as it is non-fiction, but I still absolutely loved every bit of it. I enjoy her point of view on magic, the Tarot, and spirituality in general. It’s no coincidence why I’ve picked up so many of her books! She writes a poem with each card she draws and really leans into how you should reflect on yourself and your situation in order to best receive answers. Instant knowledge or persistent questions will not lead you down the path you’d like with the Tarot. This author will not be losing me as a fan anytime soon, and I urge you to give any one of her books a chance. If you find yourself drawn to Tarot, spirituality, or magic, this one is definitely for you. Even if that doesn’t seem like your genre, you may be pleasantly surprised.

As in previous books, Marie Deblassie takes a wonderfully informative approach to magic and it's power by introducing it in such a relaxed way. As someone who thinks that, if I'm learning about new things, I must know EVERYTHING or else I know nothing, her approach makes learning about spirituality and all it entails much more within reach.

It's beautiful to be led through how magic is within the world around us, and having the extra knowledge makes it both more accessible and more every day while also really teaching you and leading you through your own journey of discovery. I will continue to follow this author and continue to appreciate and participate in the magic of the world each day. If you have any interest in spirituality and what the signs all mean, do yourself a favor and enjoy the prose and beauty of Marie DeBlassie while increasing your knowledge!
