Lurata was just a small girl when war broke out in the former Yugoslavia. She couldn't have possibly imagined the horror that lay ahead. Her hometown was singled out for ethnic cleansing by the Serb Army. Separated from her parents and forced to flee. Left alone on the dangerous streets of Kosovo's capital and rescued by two American UN heroes, but then kidnapped by soldiers claiming to be from The Kosovo Liberation Army. With much more sinister things on their mind. A tale of torment and abuse. A girl sold for sex to the highest bidder. Informed she would be killed, and her organs harvested. But Lurata was taken not once...But twice. In this story she demonstrates how you could go through anything and still be a survivor. Despite all the mental and physical abuse by Human Trafficking Gang, she remained UNBROKEN. A true story of bravery, courage and human resilience.
This book has really stayed with me. For how inhumane and awful people can be, but also for the strength of Lutata. It’s a read that has your gripped in disbelief. Recommend if you’re ready for a heavy read that will sit with you.
At first it seemed quite detailed/history heavy and I wasn't sure if I was going to get on with it, but as you got to know the author (autobiography) I got completely lost in the story. By the end I was staying up late into the night to finish it. Absolutely harrowing story, so so sad to think she lived through that and so many are still living it now. It has inspired me to do what I can to help that community of people.
Captivating yet heartbreaking and horrendous to read at the same time. It drew me in and I couldn’t put it down. Lurata is a truly tough, courageous and inspirational woman. If you think you have been through tough times, a book like this really puts things into perspective.
This book was heartbreaking but AMAZING. Makes you nervous to read the next page. This book got me started on my reading journey!!!!!! I am now a huge Freida McFadden fan!
