A mountain lion attack. A brazen robbery of a billionaire’s restaurant. Two unrelated incidents become one with explosive revelation in this brand-new harrowing thriller from the international bestselling author of The Como Falcon.
Detective David Wolf’s slow winter in the Colorado Rockies is interrupted by two a mountain lion attack in a remote trailer park, and a wealthy man coming into headquarters to report the robbery of three valuable paintings.
Leaving the big cat incident to animal control, Wolf follows his duty and pursues the two thieves, even if the victim is a cagey billionaire with his hands in the pockets of an equally shady newcomer in town running for sheriff. The investigation starts off slow, crawling to a halt as the winter ends. But as summer heats up, bones are discovered in a local abandoned mine, and it turns out the story Wolf and his team has been fed is more complicated, and deadlier, than originally thought. Killers are near and in plain sight. It’s just a matter of figuring out who. And why?
As Wolf gets closer to solving the mystery, a shocking revelation will bring clarity to all that came before. But danger has wrapped its claws around the team, and this time it may be too late, because out in the Colorado wilderness a scream’s echo can fade long before reaching the ears of any help.
The brand new thrilling installment in the international bestselling David Wolf series is a white-knuckle, whiplash-inducing trip to the high country of Colorado, keeping you devouring pages until the final word.
Jeff Carson is from the Front Range of Colorado where he lives with his wife and two sons. His David Wolf series of books takes place in the fictional ski town of Rocky Points, Colorado.
This is a “David Wolf” detective novel. It’s set in a small Colorado Rockies town. I’ve enjoyed David Wolf novels since book #1. This can be read as a standalone, but I think a person would miss much of the background. I enjoyed this mystery novel, too.
The entire David Wolf series is fantastic! I really enjoyed Echoes Fade. Jeff is such a great writer. The characters he’s created are so enjoyable, that I want to go back to book one and read through them all again because I am reminded how much I like them all and find I’ve missed them! In this book, David is lead detective in the Sheriff’s office, investigating the case of some valuable paintings stolen from a high-end restaurant. Billionaire Roland Thatcher and his daughter Gemma (restaurant owner) come directly to David Wolf bringing video surveillance footage that shows the restaurant manager Brock Wendell, fiancé of Gemma Thatcher, casually reading his phone in the back office after all the staff have left for the evening and after he’s left the front door unlocked, giving easy access for one of the cute young waitresses he’s been seeing on the side, Clara Abraham, to come in and remove the artwork. Now both of them are missing along with the paintings. Along with this storyline you have David carrying an engagement ring for his love Piper for months, never seeming to find the right time to give it to her. You also have sheriff Heather Patterson challenged by the politics and activity of her campaign for re-election while missing the detective field work and wanting to keep her personal ethics and self respect intact. Detective Rachette is my favorite character in all this series. I really liked that in this book he is physically healthier and stronger, and his smart mouth and humor are still strong. Read this book—read all of Jeff’s books—they are a great mix of mystery, adventure, action, with a little romance thrown in with characters you’ll love . Highly recommend!!
I cannot believe I have read all 17 books and thirst for more. This one was a bit different. A more mellow Wolf instead of having his heart broken while being a great detective seems to have lost his sharpe edge. The plot seemed a bit impersonal although the outcome surprised me. Perhaps the author is moving Wolf toward a happy retirement. If so he has been well served by David Wolf.
Enjoyed the read but I felt like the plots were all over the place. You read about a human hungry cat then there's a other direction until many chapters lager it's back to the cats.
The latest in the David Wolf series by Jeff Carson. David Wolf is the Chief Detective for a county in the mountains of Colorado.
Jeff Carson does a good job of describing the setting of the small town in the valley between mountains that is the setting for these stories. When paintings are stolen from a restaurant in town and the owner has surveillance video of who is responsible, the investigation is in finding the individuals responsible and finding the stolen paintings. When two cars are found down an abandoned mine shaft containing the two suspects in the robbery, the investigation quickly turns to homicide. The case isn't made easier by a billionaire whose daughter is owner of the restaurant and one of the suspects (and victims) was her fiance.
I enjoy these stories by Jeff Carson. He depicts beautiful scenery and develops interesting mysteries.
Echoes Fade is one of the best I've read in this series. The plot takes several turns. It kept me on my toes. Carson delivers excitement, intrigue and satisfying character development. The pace of the novel is perfect from the opening lion hunt to the mysterious billionaire to the unexpected shout-out and finally a resolution I didn't see coming until the end.
If you want an entertaining storyline built around fully developed characters, this is a great series. This book, in particular, was one of my favorites. Carson is my new go-to author for a great read.
I've read over 5000 books in my life. I would read this again.
The newest David Wolf mystery does not disappoint except that he is aging….and so am I! My favorite characters were back and solving the case while managing their personal lives and struggles. I loved how supportive Heather’s husband is in this book; and the challenges that David and Piper worked through during the case. These books are set in Colorado, and the descriptions of the changing weather, the topography, and altitude will make you hold your breath in anticipation. If you are a fan of series (because yeah, it’s a good book that never ends), then check out this series because now there are 17!
Man eating mountain lions, art thieves, a con man, missing art thieves, an abandoned silver mine, a tough sheriff's race, a friend's betrayal, and a hidden engagement ring. Things are moving fast in Rocky Points and a resident billionaire is pushing Wolf and his team of detectives for answers. Once again Jeff Carson has brought Wolf, Patterson, Rachette, Yates, and other characters from Rocky Points, Colorado to life, and added a few new ones as well. Jeff Carson's has chosen and combined perfect adjectives to draw his readers into the story and allow them to see every scene as if they are watching the events unfold right in front of them. I could hear Wolf breathing heavily at the hardest part of the uphill hike, feel the burn of his infrequently used leg muscles as he climbed higher. I could smell the fear of the characters standing with a gun pointed at them. I saw the beautiful smile and eyes filled with love as Piper looked at Wolf. Once you start reading Echoes you won't want to stop until you've read the last page. I do believe Jeff Carson has set the bar higher for yet to come books with this one.
Writing this review has me a little torn. On the one hand, I can appreciate the many sub-stories going on and on the other hand, I am not sure if they were meaningful. My biggest gripe is the incorporation of the mountain lions and the old, abandoned silver mine. The mountain lions mainly seemed unnecessary.
Aside from that, I enjoyed this book as I have of all the Jeff Carson’s David Wolf series. The main story begins with a millionaire’s art being stolen from his daughter’s restaurant. From there the book takes off with various twists and turns which is the hallmark of many good mystery/thriller books.
We have the criminal on camera so the case should be solved; no, that is just the beginning, leading to other crimes. I love how Carson/Wolf puts the clues together to determine who all are involved and the motives behind what’s going on. It always comes back to the beginning, but you would never have guessed.
If you are considering reading this book, give it a go…you should not be disappointed.
Love, lust, affairs, and scandals. A great read as the life of David Wolf, Patterson, and the team of detectives prevail. A billionaire's daughter is caught up in one of the many scandals brought upon by her fiance. Wolf and his team and tasked with digging deeper into the issues after expensive paintings are stolen from Gemma's restaurant. As they keep following the evidence, and getting chased by cavernous mountain lions, they succeed in determining how far down the scandals actually go. The truth comes out in the end and the 2 sisters that were tangled up on this mess had more to lose than most after they start committing crimes that get them in over their heads. A shootout ensues and in the end... colors prevail. Meanwhile, Wolf finally takes his relationship with Piper further and they get closer than ever, even though there is a lot pushing Wolf to second guess everything!
David Wolf is called on personally by the local billionaire- his daughter's restaurant was robbed of pricey art and the perps have disappeared. He never finds the perps nor the art.
Forward months later, he is called to a collapsing silver mine where some human bones are found and attributed to one of the burglers -Clara. The other is still missing. They do some research into the mine and find an alternate entrance where Wolf finds the cars of the missing and the remaining body.
So the investigation starts over. Who are the murders -are they linked to the burglary? It's complex, interesting and a good 3.5 stars.
David Wolf and Team have another tough case to crack!
A Billionaire, His Speciality Security Lead, A rich daughter, A restaurant, stolen paintings, and 2 missing presumably dead workers from the restaurant. This is what Wolf is handed. Patterson has another bidding for her job as Sheriff, so as we know the politics of that can run deep and dirty. All this in the 17th installment of the David Wolf series. Will the find the missing workers, just how much does the Billionaire know? How about his Security? Rich men tell know truths, and keep everything close. Echoes Fade is yet another perfect story.
This is book 17 and I've read them all and this was just as good as all the others. It was crazy how David kept the engagement ring in his pocket for 6 months before he finally asked Piper to marry him.
I was amazed who the 3 killers were. It was an interesting read, that's for sure.
There was nothing sexual at any time. A couple of kisses, that's all. The F-bomb was used 3 times.
As for the narration: Sean Patrick Hopkins does an excellent job when he reads. I especially love David's voice.
A couple of months ago I took a break from reading a lot each week. Instead I watched YouTube, got bored, picked out two more books but wasn't "enthralled" by any means went then went fishing ! Then I picked up this book and was once again "involved" in a true mystery that holds you in suspense !! Trying to keep up with the characters and their backgrounds once again made me smile !! I enthusiastically recommend this book look!! A great read !! I'm off to read more by Jeff Carson !!
This is the 17th book in the series, I have been hooked since the first one!! The stories Mr. Carter writes are always great. David wolf and the rest of the characters continue to grow with each book, the mysteries are always different and the ending always catch me off guard.I read alot I downloaded and read it in one day! I am such a big fan of this series . my only complaint is ,now I have to wait for the next one! Mr Carson please type faster!
I was so excited to see this new release in the David Wolf series. I have all 17 books and read this one in less than 5 hours. I could NOT put it down! If you've followed these characters for years like I have, you are going to love this episode. Twists and turns, drama and trauma along with suspense and a great ending. Highly recommend!!
Jeff Carson is a great story weaver. I love the characters that Jeff has made. You can almost picture them. I am not going to tell you what the book is about, I'm sure you have read other reviews. It is a good story and it weaves together so smoothly. You won't want to put the book down. I have read all of the David Wolf series and am ready for another. Just starting the new series that takes place in Italy. Ready for another adventure!
I have read the seventeen book series of David Wolf. The books were very very hard to put down after starting the book. I enjoyed the tie in to the previous book. They followed along for years of David Wolfs life. I understood the reasoning of his decisions. These books show the perseverance of the characters. I will enjoy reading other books and/or series from this author. I recommend highly.
I've read every book in the series and every one of them is great ... well-plotted, character-driven in an exquisite outdoor setting! This one had me laughing, tearing up and being horrified ... not at the same time, of course. Thank you, John Carson, for sharing your gift as a writer with us all. P.S. The Ali Falco series is wonderful! 🙏❤️
Jeff Carson writes great stories. This one as all of his stories have a mystery in them. I did not know who was who done it until almost to the end and you still didn’t know until David Wolf started putting two and two together. I do recommend this book. It is a good book and it’s pretty clean. I don’t remember any ugly words. And I think David Wolfer not getting graphic in his storytelling, ugly words and sex.
In the last novel, Wolf had two chances to close the book on Piper and go back to Luke - Piper could have died of the gun shot wound or he could have backed away when she asked him about it. In this tale, she just about forces him into proposing. So, unless something drastic happens in the last novel, I guess it isn’t meant for Wolf and Luke to be together. I am not looking forward to the series ending, so, Jeff, get to writing more of them.
Another great book in this series. This book could be read as a stand alone book. The reader would gain some character background by reading this series in order. The story moves along at a good pace and keeps the reader guessing and interested. I’m waiting patiently for the next book in the series.
I have followed Jeff Carson’s David Wolf series for a while now, and it never fails to keep me captivated. This is one of the best series in this genre I have read. If you are looking for a new author, I highly encourage you to give Jeff a try; he will not disappoint! Now to wait in the wings for the next book in the series!
I have read the complete wolf series and have enjoyed each book. My best friend suggested I read your books a couple years ago. I have in turn suggested to one of my other friends to read and they have enjoy following wolf's adventures. Thank you so much and I'm looking forward to your next book. JS
Always enjoy catching up with characters I have been reading about. This series brings them to life in a good way. I love the back and forth between the detectives and they are portrayed well.
Good glimpse into the mountains of Colorado and some interesting twists along the way.
A good story. Enjoyable read. Look forward tom book 18
Another enjoyable David Wolf book. I always love getting back with the gang! I have read all the Wolf books and although this seemed like a "kinder and gentler" Wolf, somewhat mellowing now, each one has been a fun read. I really liked this storyline but actually felt as though Wolf, himself, was somewhat missing. Maybe I am just missing the old Wolf a bit.
This is #17 in the David Wolf mystery series, a series set in the fictional town of Rocky Points in the Colorado mountains. Each book has been wonderful, and this one was no exception. In fact it may be the best one yet! It was a good mystery with many suspects and a surprise ending I had not anticipated. I am looking forward to #18!
Another suspenseful case for David and the team, with Patterson back it will complete the team, just goes to show what greed, cheating and a psycho can do to those who think they can con their way through life with no regards for anyone else - does not end well for them. So happy for David and Piper - wedding bells at last for him♥️
I loved this one too. Have read all 17 installments and as I said in a previous review, characters feel as family. Every single one of them. Patterson is as much a protagonist in this one as David, who seems to be starting to take a second place in the series. Can’t wait for the next one. Jeff Carson only gets better and better. 5 stars.
