A man with impressive cultural and intellectual interests, José Trías Monge is both the fascinating protagonist and the able narrator of this beautiful book. Not only did he play a crucial role in the political and historical development of Puerto Rico through his participation in the creation of the Commonwealth, Trías Monge was also a brilliant jurist whose superb writing skills are the essence of this book. His engaging, elegant, and precise narrative leads us through his childhood in old San Juan, his academic success in the University of Puerto Rico, his legal and later doctoral studies in Harvard and Yale, respectively, and some of the most significant events in 20th century Puerto Rico as someone who both witnessed and participated in them. Cómo fue is both informative and moving, and a true testament to what an extraordinarily interesting and talented person José 'Pepe' Trías Monge was.
