Cali Melle is a USA Today Bestselling Author who writes sports romance that will pull at your heartstrings. You can always expect her stories to come fully equipped with heartthrobs and a happy ending, along with some steamy scenes. In her free time, Cali can usually be found living in a magical, fantasy world with the newest book or fanfic she's reading or freezing at the ice rink while she watches her kids play hockey.
The pages of this book would have made better litter box liner for my friend's cat than a book. Mercifully, I pirated it. 😂
This whole story was giving "I can change him! He's abusive and cruel toward me but it's only because he believes he's not worthy of love" Girl STAND UP.
HOLY INTERNALIZED MISOGYNY BATMAN. Rich boy meets smart promising girl and breaks her heart. Author reduces said girl into a pathetic whimpering begging doormat of a human when her high school fuck buddy callously dumps her and leaves her behind. She goes on to stand on her own two feet and make a name for herself as a junior editor with a MASTERS IN ENGLISH and Cali Melle AGAIN reduces that woman into a poor pathetic pick-me of a woman.
You have the spoiled rich boy who never faced the consequences of any of his actions because of his daddy's money and the equally wealthy insecure doormat. This story read more like a case study of narcissistic intimate partner abuse more than romance.
Given Winter's upbringing and family structure, she's the perfect picture of the "lost child" and the perfect candidate to attract abusers like Malakai. Throughout the book she turns into his therapist to try and reason and rationalize why he's so cruel to her one minute and so needy for her the next minute. Instead of just understanding that no amount of trauma any one person endures as a legitimate excuse for their own shitty behavior and holding Kai responsible, she just lies down and takes it. FOR THE WHOLE STORY.
I don't know what's more pathetic, Winter staying celibate for 6 FUCKING YEARS after Kai took her virginity and broke her heart while he went around dating & fucking other women or letting Kai fuck her the day after she moves back.
“It was a common theme between us. Kai was broken and I always did like fixing things. He was a problem I wanted to solve, yet I was never able to. Kai’s demons had their claws deep in his skin and he was deep inside my rib cage, making a home out of my heart. We were toxic. We didn’t belong together, but somehow we couldn’t fight the pull of the tides between us.”
Malakai "Kai" (H): ex pro athlete, selfish rich boy, spoiled child who used daddy's money to never face consequences, cruel and uncaring. Has a serious "Woe is me" attitude. Really hard to like a never accepts responsibility for his actions. Not celibate during separation and dated/fucked plenty of OW but continued to follow and check up on Winter while she lived in Vermont.
Winter (h): sensitive, extremely insecure, smart, extremely educated & successful in her own terms but also extremely fear driven living in her sister's shadow. Has major body betraying syndrome. Dated one random guy but stayed celibate during the whole 6 years.
🚨Their whole dynamic was so so toxic and abusive. Kai had no desire to control his angry outbursts but the moment Winter gets mad about something HE GOES ICE COLD OR BALLISTIC. She was never allowed to be angry or hurt or process their feelings without Kai turning it on her and icing her out or blowing up on her and making her feel bad.
Since many other reviewers neglected to disclose: ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ Not safe Hero NOT celibate during separation (dated & fucked OW to forget Winter) Heroine celibate during 6 year separation Cheating & OW drama in high school flashbacks of a party (H rationalizes by saying its okay because they weren't exclusive) Child abuse & trauma -MMC Childhood Neglect - FMC Second Chance
0/5 This was absolute garbage was a justification of toxic abuse.
Despite her hesitation, Winter Reign returns to her hometown of Orchid City. Everything reminds her of the heartbreak Malakai Barclay caused. But she can lick it in a box knowing Kai is on tour. Until he’s not.
There hasn’t been a Cali Melle book I haven’t loved and The Lie us no exception. I love the slightly damaged characters and the way Cali is able to bring them a happily ever after without unnecessary drama.

Kai was the grumpiest of the grumps and I loved him even more for it. This man was damaged and found his safe space in Winter and it was absolutely swoon worthy. The trauma added a layer to this book I didn’t know I needed honestly. There are not two book main characters that were more made for each other than winter and Kai.
I AM DYINGGGGG FOR Gs book, i cannot wait for that deaf rep 😍
Grateful for this opportunity to read this ARC!!

EXCUSE ME. Have we NOT learned our lesson by now that a book with a celibate h while the H has sex with everyone and everything is a BIG no no!?!?!? Like, WHAAAAAAAT.
Ok ok. So FIRST we watch him dump her. Then we watch him come back and act like he’s all in it to win it to get her back. Here I am expecting major life changing grovel, epic love declarations, like HELLO it’s been SIX YEARS!? If you’re coming back into her life after breaking her heart you better make it good.
Do you think he does? NO! After legitimately 3 times of running into her, all lasting a minute each time, they end up SLEEPING TOGETHER! I’m screaming. Crying. Whatever. Sure maybe I could’ve gotten past it, if he didn’t DEMAND to know that he’s the only guy she’s been with in SIX. YEARS! Annnnnnnd of course he was. Because ya know. Not having sex for six years makes all the sense when you had your heart broken. But here he was following her around and watching her from afar for six years and STILL has sex with other women. EW. Honestly I found out about the other women from another review because I couldn’t even move forward after this scene.
She lets him have unprotected sex with her not knowing if HES been with other people, then apologizes the next morning!?!? 🤣🤣🤣 THEN he goes 4 days without seeing or talking to her after the sex. I thought you were winning her back!?!?!?!!!!!
This book was a HECK NAW from me. I’m only at 35% and I really can’t see it getting better, especially once we find out he’s with other women and she was celibate. The fact that she still forgives him and sleeps with him so quick, is just absolutely a big yuck in a book.
I never ever imagined myself being interested in golf, but this book proved me wrong! This is the second book in the Orchid City series and I loved it just as much as the first! This was an emotional and heartwarming second chance romance that somehow made golf…sexy? Definitely not a combination of words I ever thought I’d use but that’s how good Cali’s writing is! Her book boyfriends are always to die for and Kai was no exception. Both he and Winter were so vulnerable and honest and that built up such a strong relationship between them. This was such a great romance! Thank you to Cali and her team for the ARC!
I will give this book 2 stars because writing a book and publishing it is hard but this story is toxic cringey garbage. The love interest in this book is TOXIC and claims to have gone to therapy but I think he needs his money back because he has several unresolved issues. Most importantly, the dialogue in the book is so cringe I could hardly finish it. I am so disappointed because I liked the first book but this book is just too much. I will pretend I never this book and hope for a better 3rd book.

Okay first I want to thank Cali herself for this ARC! 💚
The Orchid City men are 🥵 Kai was so grumpy and damaged. He found his safe place with Winter. He knew to go to her whenever he needed someone and she would always be there. Their relationship developed beautifully. They way that they are always there for each other?! Kai helps her with her anxiety and panic attacks and Winter helps him with his demons by being his light.
this series has my heart, kai and winter were perfect. The second chance. The tension. It was oh so perfect and I loved it oh so much. This is an incredible small town, second chance, pro golfer x figure skater romance and it hits the spot. Cali absolutely killed it with this book and I can't wait for you all to get your hands on it, because it is the perfect continuation in this series.
I related to Winter and her anxiety so much and seeing Kai be there for her was incredible but also watch her get through them on her own, shows just how strong she is.

This is the second book in Cali Melle’s Orchid City series. It is an interconnected standalone, so you will see minor spoilers if you don’t read the first book in the series before this one.
I am absolutely loving this series. I related to this story so much. I think this might be my favorite Cali book to date…I could not put this book down and read this in less than 24 hours.
This story follows Kai and Winter. Kai is a pro golfer, who is taking a much needed break. He wants his only love, Winter, back. Six years ago, he pushed her away and now he’s back for her. Winter has moved back to her hometown and is trying to avoid the ghosts of her past. She sees Kai again and his intentions are clear, she is his. She fights it at first, but she finds forgiveness.
Kai is so grumpy and I am here for it. I love the grumps!! This man was broken (slowly becoming a favorite of mine) and found his safe space in Winter, it melted my heart. The angst and the tension were utter perfection in this! The spice was spicing…and HELLO! no third act break up! These two were so perfect for each other, I’m glad they got their HEA.
Thank you to Cali and team for the eARC. I cannot wait for the next in the series…Giana!!!

I loved how Kai knew what he wanted and even though he had screwed up, he was determined to get Winter back! Loved him going to the library 😍
The spice was well written and no third act break up! The two communicated so well and I love that.
I can’t wait for the 3rd book! Pick this one up on 9/1 💚
A steamy, dual POV, second chance sports romance between a pro golfer and a figure skater. While this wasn't my favorite read of the year, it had a lot of Spice, angst and emotional depth and was good on audio. Worth picking up but not super memorable for me.
Ok so this book was really hyped up by the arc readers on booktok and I gave it a go based off 1 particular scene that they all depicted. When will I learn, smh. So this book starts with a prologue of the 2 MC’s Winter and Kai when they are in high school then the entire book then proceeds to do that back and forth, past then present time jump. This is my very least favorite style of writing and I avoid books like this like the plague. It takes away the readers focus on the actual story and anything going on in the present loses all momentum. Plus everything that was written in the the time of the past could have been surmised in a few chapters at the beginning then we could have seamlessly moved into the present. Also, yes Kai is damaged due to abuse from his father and neglect from his mother, but honestly he was still a big jerk for most of the book. His inner dialogue was choppy and unfocused at best. Like he was always wishy washy. And there were too many plot twists or points made that never got solved or fixed. Like what did his father mean by that whole you were supposed to be let alone be this…? Was he not the father? Did he just never want kids? Then he dates and is with other women during their years apart, yet she dated but never was intimate yet he was sick over seeing her smile at a dude? Then the end was so lackluster and abrupt. I mean it was a total letdown and the extended epilogue wasn’t much better. This author seems to like to end things in the middle of a scene or conversation. Leaving you feeling empty, confused and frustrated. The spice is minimal and happens very quickly, always the same scenario and it’s tame and over in a flash. I’d rate 1 outta 5 🌶️
Because of the abrupt ending that was like mid scene and then the same thing happens in the extended epilogue I have to unfollow this author. It’s what ruins the entire experience for a reader. 2.5 ⭐️
Malakai Barclay is a professional golfer who had a traumatic past due to his father and childhood. Dealing with what he had, Kai had found refuge in Winter Reign. She meant the world to him, although he didn’t believe he deserved her or could give her what she needed. Ultimately, making him choose to break things off with Winter- despite her protests.
Six long years later, after Winter has attended college and began a life of her own, she moves back home to Orchid City to take over her parents house while they’re traveling. On her first night back, a ghost from her past makes his presence well known. Seeing Kai after he broke her heart causes a full blown panic attack. Although it’s not her first, how can the person who used to be the one to help her through her attacks be the one causing it now?
I love Kai and Winters story. I loved the growth of Kai throughout and loved seeing him open himself up to the love he fully deserves a little at a time. Despite the six years they had been apart, they knew they were it for each other. They both faced multiple obstacles but chose to persevere in order to make their second chance at love work. There were a lot of emotional parts in this story, with Kai and his parents, that was hard to imagine having to deal with, but the outcome made it worth it! Also, I think this series just keep getting spicier and spicer (no complaints here 😉)
I can’t wait to read about Giana, I know it is going to be perfect!!
y’all… this book was EVERYTHING. it does go into some very dark subjects (TW: abuse) Kai and Winter were childhood lovers until he left her with no explanation and now he is back in their hometown to win her back. There is alotttt of groveling in this book. Winter does not forget to remind Kai of what he did to her BUT I do feel like it was still well done. I was literally screaming and blushing through this whole entire book so I HIGHLY recommend.
I absolutely loved this story! A second chance romance for the books! Winter and Malakai are destined soul mates. Kai breaks her heart right before Winter goes to college. He was always dealing with past demons and abuse and never felt like he was enough. Fast forward 6 years where the two find their way back to each other. He is a professional golfer and she longs to be an established author. It was a long, hard road but I’m so glad they got their HEA. Great read!
I *really* wanted to like this book since I truly like the author and I've loved her past hockey books. But this one is a big no no. I got so irrationally angry that I had to step away at multiple points because the supposed 'hero' of this book is horrible. He's horrible in the beginning, he's horrible after all the supposed soul searching, self reflecting therapy he's done, and will quite frankly, is not worth the gum on the bottom of your shoe. He needs to go find the prickliest cactus to sit on forever. Plus the internalized misogyny?! Holy hell batman. ENOUGH. I have no idea why Winter was so head over heels for Kai since he had *no* redeeming qualities. The gum at the bottom of your shoe would actually be the better boyfriend.
For the love of God, can we PLEASE stop the trope where the h has her heart broken by the H, and she stays celibate and pining over him, but he fucks anything that moves? Instant no. In the wise words of Ariana Grande, thank you next.
Obviously this was a miss for me thematically, but I still understand how hard it is to write a novel, publish it, and then send it out for other people to read. That takes guts I don't have, and I want to really impress that while I didn't like this book, that doesn't mean I'm attacking the author.
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions **
**ARC REVIEW** "She was the sun in the sky, the moon and the stars. She was the entire universe and I was simply just existing in her atmosphere..."
The Lie of Us is book #2 in the Orchid City series by Cali Melle. I can't put into words just how much I love Cali's writing!!! Every book she writes, it pulls on my heartstrings and I keep wanting to read more and more.
There are some hard topics discussed so might be a good idea to check out the trigger warning.

Malakai Barclay, aka Kai, has always lived with internal demons thanks to his father. He doesn't know how to overcome these and the only thing he can do is push away the one person who has always wanted to be there for him. His safe space, Winter Reign.
Winter Reign has loved Malakai since she first met him and has always known that he is amazing and deserves to be loved. She is left heartbroken when he finally pushes her away and tells her to leave him and move to Vermont for university to follow her dreams of becoming an author.
Fast forward 6 years and they are reunited at an event back in Orchid City. Winter can't seem to finish a book without thinking about the ghost of Kai and Kai can't seem to get his golfing right after seeing Winter with another guy.
Kai is back for his girl & will do anything to get her back. Will Winter give him a second chance or is it too late for them? You will have to read to find out!
This book kept me captivated the entire time and I was a blubbering mess at certain moments.
The way Cali can translate the heartbreak into words I can't even explain it! It was so beautifully written!
I loved how much Winter loved books and worked at a library! Every time Kai called her "darling" it was so cute!! The spicy moments between the two of them had me blushing!
I am definitely excited for book #3 !!! Surfer and rescuing a baby turtle!!! COUNT ME IN!!
Thank you Cali for kindly sending me this arc to read and review. This review is my own honest opinion on the book.
Cali Melle's "The Lie of Us" is a exploration of love, trauma, and the intricate dance between two beautifully broken characters.
This book not only stands strongly on its own but also adds an extra layer of depth for those who have delved into "Meet Me in the Penalty Box." It is a true interconnected standalone—while readers won't miss out on anything crucial by not having read the previous installment, delving into "Meet Me in the Penalty Box" enhances the overall experience, making the characters even more endearing.
Winter and Kai, the central characters, each bearing the weight of realistic traumas and histories that resonate deeply with readers (especially myself who suffers from panic attacks). The beauty of Winter and Kai's relationship lies in its complexity. Despite the passage of six years and the heartbreak that has marked their journey, their connection remains a beacon of solace. The struggle to navigate through their shared history, filled with pain and confusion, adds a layer of realism that is both heartwarming and heart-wrenching.
The incorporation of past views into their relationship adds a poignant touch to the narrative. Witnessing the evolution of their connection over time, complete with the angst that comes with it, creates a sense of anticipation and giddiness for the reader. Melle masterfully weaves together the past and present, allowing the readers to fully comprehend the depth of emotions that Winter and Kai grapple with.
Overall "The Lie of Us" is not just a love story; it's a journey of healing, self-discovery, and the unyielding resilience of the human spirit. Melle's prose is both evocative and tender, drawing readers into a world where brokenness is mended through the power of connection.
Malakai, aka Kai, and Winter’s story is a beautiful journey of second chances. We really see these characters break down their walls for what they want! Things to look for in this book:
Second chance romance ✔️ First loves ✔️ Soulmates ✔️ Pro golfer/figure skater ✔️ Broken hero ✔️
Six years ago, Kai and Winter were each other’s everything. Winter was his safe place to land and Kai was her heart. They couldn’t be more different, but their friendship bloomed into something so beautiful, yet something that could never survive. Kai had a terrible home life and would never be able to give Winter what she needed. So when he forced her out of his life, she was left picking up the pieces of her shattered heart.
Now here we are in the present. Kai and Winter are both back in their hometown for very different reasons. Winter is there to take over her family’s estate and Kai is back for Winter. He knew immediately after ending things that he would never love someone like he loved her and now he is finally ready to fight for her. But will Winter be open to a reconciliation or will she be resistant from all of the hurt that she experienced all of those years ago?
Kai and Winter are the definition of soulmates. They were each other’s missing puzzle piece and when they were apart, things definitely were not right. But Cali Melle gives us the reconciliation that we are all rooting for from page 1! These characters really go through it and their emotions are on display, but that just makes their happy ending that much better.
I am SO excited for Giana’s book next!! Especially with the preview at the end. She deserves every bit of a HEA and maybe we will get to see a bit of Nico as a protective older brother?!
Y’ALL ARE NOT READY FOR THIS ONE!!!! Ahhhh I freaking love Malakai “Kai” Barclay. Absolutely adore him. He had a very rough childhood with an abusive father, both physically and emotionally.
Winter Reign was his home, his safe place. Things fell apart for him and he didn’t want to drag Winter down with him… So he decided to make a decision for them that she was going to go to Vermont without him and he broke her heart, even though it was breaking his in the process. He did everything he could to get her to hate him to make it easier. But they threw away 6 years of their lives where neither were able to move on.
Now Winter is back in Orchid City and when Kai found out she was moving back, he dropped everything to go home. He wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. He wanted his home back. Winter was shocked to see him there and it proves difficult for the both of them.
Kai isn’t afraid to tell her he is there for her and I love that so much. Doesn’t leave much room for her to question his motives. I absolutely loved this and the chapters detailing the past really brought the whole relationship full circle.
Cali does it again with another hit and I am so in love with this series. This is a must read!!!
This one had me absolutely addicted to knowing Kai & Winter’s story.
Kai is a professional golfer and has found himself in a career rut, Winter has moved back to her hometown of Orchid City after her parents decided to give her her childhood home. She’s faced to relive the ghosts of her past and the memories that haunt it. All of them having to do with Malakai Barclay, and how he broke her heart.
Kai’s back in Orchid City looking for one thing and one thing only, the love of his life, Winter Reign. He’s determined to get her back, and never let her go again.
I couldn’t put this book down! I loved the random flashback scenes to give us some insight into their past, it made their story all more real and made me understand them more.
Kai was learning how to heal from his childhood trauma and Winter was the perfect match for Kai, understanding him and what he needed more than he understood himself.
Their love was special and the words he spoke to her, had me swooning 🥹
“All I’ve known with you was pain, but yours was the sweetest kind. I want it all. Don’t ever stop hurting me.”
“You are my home,” I whispered against her lips as I kissed her once more and released her. “I’ll always come back to you.”
A small town, second chance, it’s always been you book following Malakai “Kai” and Winter.
Kai is a professional golfer, who’s had a terrible childhood with a painful past. He seeks comfort in Winter and was willing to let her into his life. One day Kai felt he couldn’t give Winter what she deserved and broke things off with her, leaving Winter completely heartbroken and hurt.
Winter left her life behind after being hurt by kai and never looked back to attend college and later moving away. Six years later, she moves back to Orchid City after learning that her parents left their estate to her. Winter is conflicted because she wants nothing to do with this house because of all the memories that it holds.
These two characters have been a part from each other for six years, but the universe must have aligned because they both came back to Orchid City at the same time. Kai makes a visit to Winter’s childhood home unexpectedly to surprise her and to try and make things right by winning back her love and forgiveness. Kai was 100% all in and willing to fight for his girl, the person who is his love, safe space, and home.
Their story was truly heartbreaking seeing how both characters were fighting a battle with no support system until they both reunite again. I love seeing how Kai knew how to help Winter when she was having her panic and anxiety attacks and how Winter knew when Kai needed comfort.

Cali put me on an emotional roller coaster with this book. The ride we went on with Malakai (Kai) and Winter was truly a journey I was happy to go on. I love the way Cali smoothly would transition from past to present day just gave the book that extra touch of emotion. This second chance romance about these destine soulmates was beautifully written.
Six years ago Kai lost Winter who was his everything. She was his home, his sanctuary, his safe place. She was his mental and physical refuge from his abusive father. Kai did what he felt he needed to do to protect her. He pushed her away. Six years later Winter moves back to her hometown of Orchid City. When Kai finds out she’s back,he has just one purpose in life and that’s to win her back. Is winter over her heartbreak? Will Malakai succeed and win his everything back?
Malakai and Winter were complete opposites but yet so perfect for each other. She’s the light to his dark. They knew how to be a comfort for each other. This book had my heart in a chokehold especially when covering the darker topics. Cali you have out done yourself again. I can’t wait to read the next one. Giana’s book is up next.

“I’m so hopefully in love with you, Winter Reign. You are my absolute weakness.”
"And for Malakai Barclay, I would willingly burn until I was reduced to nothing but ash."
Winter and Malakai were everything I never knew I needed. I love a. Good sports romance and this was my first golfer romance. I loved the preview of Malakai in Meet me in the penalty box.
He came back for her and she afraid to face him. Malakai's childhood trauma is hard spot for him and he has only ever wanted to protect Winter. Winter has been broken for a long time and she doesn't know if she will ever be whole again.
These characters were AMAZING! They are fragile when needed but can always be very strong when the time comes. Better together or will they be stronger apart? The Lie of Us was a great read. Thank you Cali for this ARC. September 1st can't come quick enough!
I absolutely love Kai and Winter! I enjoyed how the story went between the past and the present to show how far they both came, which really solidified the plot and the story well-paced overall. Seeing the growth with Winter as a person while also helping Kai become someone better was perfection. I also really liked the representation of mental health and that Kai goes to therapy and actually values it. If you have a soft spot for a broken hero who has a chance of redemption, this is for you!
A second chance romance that hits just right with no third act breakup!
I absolutely loved this book and really enjoyed the fact that it touched on every day issues like panic and anxiety. The way that Winter forgave Kai even though she was heartbroken is what true love should be. Kai also knew what he wanted and was prepared to do anything to get it. Once they agreed to alway tell each other the truth, they created a bond that was unstoppable.
I love everything that Cali Melle writes and I can’t wait for the next book in the series 🥰
This is my first from the author. I’m excited to read the next one.
This is a second chance romance, between Kai and Winter. It flips between past and present. He’s a broken hero, who’s a bit possessive when it comes to his love. They were both fairly successful in their careers, he a golfer and her a figure skater.
Their paths cross after 6 years and there’s a “it’s always been you” moment.
This is a small town romance and does deal with a few heavier topics, check TW. There’s great mental health rep and no 3rd act break up!
Definitely recommend if you love a spicy second chance romance.
