A very well written page turner, which combines romance, mystery & revenge. I loved Kit who whilst focused on revenge also opened his heart to Suzannah. I also loved Suzannah who should have feared Kit but felt safe with him, I love how their initial attraction grew & deepened. Kit was caring of those around him, his friends, his servants & also horses. The story flowed effortlessly & there were times when I was on the edge of my seat, the climax was thrilling & full of danger. Overall an engrossing, page turner, which I loved My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Trope: MC seeking vengeance, false imprisonment, class difference between the MC's Steam level: 2 Last of the series (so far), works as a standalone, intro to a new series by the author
This author is new to me, and while I have enjoyed the previous novellas in this series, I would honestly give the first half of this the full 5 stars; the tension and action are perfectly done. I was immediately caught up in the MMC's revenge plot and what he might do next. There's also a bit more character depth than I'd expected from a novella (Jude is a wonderful supporting character; I would read a full-length book featuring him). The MC's have great chemistry.
Unfortunately, tropes do start appearing, with both main characters' arcs sliding by a bit too fast and the plot unravelling slightly toward the end.
I would still recommend this, though, and probably will check out something by this author in the future.
The Scoundrel of Drury Lane by Lauren Smith is the 7th book in the Scandals and Scoundrels of Drury Lane series by various historical romance authors and is perhaps one of the most solid books in the series that I've read. I greatly enjoyed it; it is well written and intriguing, with a revenge theme along the lines of The Count of Monte Cristo, with a young, idealistic Christopher "Kit" Hollingsworth being falsely accused of a crime he did not commit, sentenced to transportation to the penal colonies in Australia for seven years of hard labor and his return home, seeking revenge against the three men who've wronged him. Along the way, he finds that his beloved father, the former Earl of Kentwell, has passed away, and Kit has to assume his responsibilities as the new earl as he settles back into life in England. He also finds that one of the three men has died, but he seeks out the man's daughter, an artist painting scenery for the plays at the Drury Lane theater. What follows is Kit and Suzannah's love story, and since it is a full length novel, one of the book's strengths is the fuller development of these two well-drawn main characters. Early on, it remains unclear whether Kit will seek his revenge on Suzannah, against the advice of his close friends, or will see that she is innocent of her father's crime against him and leave her out of his plans. Suzannah, to her credit, is portrayed as a woman of quiet strength, who gradually is able to turn Kit's focus from revenge and rage to that of love.
It is a very tender love story and at several points in the novel, the prose is beautifully written, as it conveys Kit's journey to healing his past and moving forward with his future. I think one of the things that I felt got a bit lost in the story was the revenge theme. It is prominent in the first third of the story, loses its footing somewhat in the middle part of the story and then returns to be dealt with in the last 15% of the book. Personally, I hoped the confrontation and resolution would not take as much of a backseat as it did until the last 15% of the book. Still, the ending ties up the loose ends - all the villains are dealt with, and the happily ever after is well done.
I did take a wee bit of issue with how some of the wounds (during the resolution) were handled - I wouldn't expect a significant wound to the shoulder to require a character to walk with a cane afterward; if he had been injured in the leg, then it would make greater sense to me. I did love the epilogue and not only how it ties up Kit and Suzannah's story but leads into the next book of what hopefully will become The Rogues of Devil's Square series. I'm quite invested in finding out what happens between Kit's closest childhood friend, the Duke of Tiverton, and Meredith Montague!
4.25 stars
I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.
What was neat about this novella was the POV was mainly the hero, with only pop ins of the heroine's thoughts. Kit Hollingsworth is falsely accused of theft and transported to Australia for 7 years, coming home to find his 4 (5?) main friends have remained loyal, although not thrilled with his revenge obsession, which is turned on its head when he falls in love with the innocent Suzanna Townsend, a poor set painter for the Drury Lane theater, who also happens to be the daughter of the man who helped put in him prison. Suzanna now becomes the chink in Kit's armor as his past continues to haunt him.
Starts a little slow with introductions of the cast of characters, but the romance builds beautifully and the ending is great.
Audiobook: Overall liked the narrator though not in love with the deep breathy voice of the hero. [Loved the Theater manager Flurie's voice ... I need to read his story too!) I look forward to reading this in print when it comes out!
Kit, an earl’s son transported to Australia for a crime he didn’t commit, returns from hell against all odds seven years later. His band of brothers on Devil’s Square never gave up on him, and together they set the wheels of vengeance in motion. Feeling restless his first night back, he sets out to find the daughter of the man who testified against him, but he gets sidetracked by a young painter…
Ever since her father’s death, Suzannah has been surviving on her painting skills. Theatre sets by night and pretty pictures by day - her dreams of painting portraits long gone. Until one night a stranger finds her at the theatre and hires her to do just that - paint him as his truest self. Bit by bit the pieces fall into place… this is the man who haunted her father till his last breath, the man she should fear most.
~ “Show him love and do not back down. A man’s rage can bluster and wail like the violent storms that swell the seas of a man’s heart. But love calms all waters in the end.” ~
⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ The thrilling tale of man returning to a life he no longer fits into, and the young woman who won’t give up on him. A tale filled with contrast and strong emotions. Hell turned him into a cold beast, dead inside, yet she touches his soul and stirs his heart. She’s his greatest weakness and his hidden strength. There’s something about Suzannah and Kit - their resilience, the faith in their gut. They care and are unafraid to show each other. A touching romance that grows from hate, rage and revenge.
Complex flawed main characters, their colourful and loyal found families, sleazy conspiring villains and an action-packed plot that had me hooked from the beginning. This was a dark and steamy delight, and I really enjoyed this book! It’s also the first of a new series, and I for one cannot wait to see what happens next to ‘The Rogues of Devil’s Square’!
THE LADY ARTIST PAINTS THE ROGUE Christopher "Kit" Hollingsworth, son of the Earl of Kentwell, ended up on a ship to Australia, sentenced for a crime he did not commit. On his return to London seven years later, he seeks the daughter of one of his accusers. Suzannah Townsend supports herself painting backdrops of the Vauxhall theater. Kit and Suzannah feel safe with each other, but Kit hasn't given up plotting revenge against the other two men guilty of his deportment. A very deep connection develops between Kit and Suzannah. Can love tame the beast? No angst in their relationship, just the threat of retaliation from his accusers. The plot moves quickly with help from Kit's devoted friends. A very good read for the first book in the series. Very, very HOT!!! I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Only at 19, Kit Hollingsworth was shipped to Australia for a crime falsely charged to him for 7 years. He comes back England to have revenge on those who wronged him. His friends continued to stay his friends after all that time apart, but not sure about his plan. He ends up meeting Suzanna who is a painter of the theatrical sets at the Drury Lane, but she happens the daughter of one of the men who sent him to prison! I love that this had a bit of Monte Cristo vibes. Its a buildup between our main couple but its worth the wait. I'm excited for her Rogues of Devil's Square series.

Thanks to BookSirens for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion.
This is book 7 of the multi-author series The Scandals and Scoundrels of Drury Lane, but I have not read the others in the series yet, and this appears to be a stand alone book. Though from what I can see, with the relationships in the story, this may be part of another series as well.
This a revenge story, as Kit Hollingsworth, at the tender age of 19, was implicated in a crime, wrongfully convicted, and sentenced to hang, but thanks to his aristocratic father, he was able to avoid the noose, and instead was transported to seven years of hard labour in Australia. During that time, he went from being a privileged, wealthy lord to a hard man, who was forced to hard labour, and fight to survive. He knows who is to blame for his situation, and his goal was to be able to make his back to England, prove his innocence, and seek his revenge on the three men he blames for his situation and the loss of his life as he knew it.
After 7 years, Kit was able to make his way to London. He has grown hard, weary, and focused on revenge. After making his way home, he discovers that he has lost his father as well in the time he was gone. His father, despairing he loss of his son, not hearing from Kit, and not being able to prove his innocence, appeared to give up and grow frail, dying a couple of years before Kit's return. But the good thing is that Kit finds out that he is not alone and without connections, but still has the friendship and loyalty of his childhood friends who have sought to prove his innocence over the years, helped his father, and now will stand by his side as he seeks his revenge.
But this is not just a revenge story, it is also a historical romance too, and it turns out that one of the men he has marked for revenge has died, and Kit seeks out his orphaned daughter to see if she is in any way aware of her father's deeds or living off any ill-gotten gains from his betrayal of Kit. He finds Suzannah Townsend working as a painter of backdrops at a Drury Lane theater. She is living a precarious life, making ends meet painting, and selling some of her art in Hyde Park. It is obvious she has not inherited any great wealth. Kit finds that he has not lost all his capacity to care, and finds himself falling in love with the pretty painter.
But that does not deter him from his goal of revenge against the other two men responsible for his conviction, and this makes him and those he cares for targets, as his trap for them closes.
An entertaining story of wrongful conviction, hardship, and revenge, with a background story of brotherhood and enduring friendships. The romance was sweet, quite sudden, with a bit of different social status vibe, and while I liked it, I felt that it was overshadowed and not as enthralling as the revenge story.
Seven years ago, Christopher, better known as Kit, was falsely accused of serious crimes. After serving his sentence in Australia, he's back in London, and Kit is out for revenge against the men who betrayed him.
Suzannah has been on her own for the last year following the passing of her father. As a talented artist, she makes ends meet by selling small paintings by day in the park and painting sets at Drury Lane by night.
Worlds collide when Kit discovers "his little painter" is none other than the daughter of one of the men who led to his false conviction.
All this and much more in: "The Scoundrel of Drury Lane" by Lauren Smith, book seven of the Scandals and Scoundrels of Drury Lane series . Cover Rating: (3/5- it's not a love. Also, all the books in this series have similar covers, and I find it hard to distinguish each book at a glance) Story Rating: 4/5 Steam Rating: 🔥 🔥 🔥 (+eluded to scene- lighter scenes) Ending: HEA with epilogue into next book in Smith's new series . Stand alone or series: Easily read as stand alone but halfway through I was starting to hope that this would become a series, and it is! . England, 1817 Falsely Convicted Earl Theatrical Set Painter Big Hero, Small Heroine Cinamonroll Alpha He Falls HARD Class Difference Revenge Plot You're Mine Vibes Scarred Hero Age Gap . Lauren Smith is quickly becoming an author I really look forward to reading. I found "Scoundrel" to be an especially interesting title by her as it IS a historical romance, however, the true, main plotline is that of revenge. Especially in the first several chapters of the book, there is a lot of story and world-building taking place for the romance storyline to come together. If I were rating this book on pure romance, it would land more on a 3/5, but as a whole including the revenge plot, it is a solid 4/5.
While the romance can somewhat be overshadowed by the main revenge plot, I was hooked on how everything would play out in the end. This is a truly complicated, complex story of revenge and self-growth that is perfect for an HR reader looking for a little bit more. I truly don't believe that Kit would have been able to become who he became by the end of the book without Suzannah. Their romance was an essential piece of his story. This book does carry some heavier themes, so be sure to check out the content warning below if you are wary of more dark themes in your HR, but I would NOT say this is a dark, historical romance.
As for steam, this title is a less steamy approach compared to other titles I have read by Smith. Overall, she uses more eluded to or less explicit terms for body parts and physical acts. Additionally, steam lands on a lower scale with shorter length of scenes and eluded to scenes. However, I do enjoy that Smith did not add more steam just for the sake of adding steam. The book solidly stands alone without a lot of spice needed to keep things interesting. . Read as an ARC ebook provided by BookSirens and the publisher. Honest review left voluntarily. . I am always amazed at Lauren Smith's ability to convey the emotions and feelings of her characters so vividly that you feel them too. She captures the betrayal Kit experiences when falsely accused with such beauty. The transformation of Kit from a carefree Lord to a condemned prisoner, along with all he endures to escape and return to England, is perfectly articulated. Despite the odds, Kit's strong will and thirst for vengeance ensure his survival.
When he returns home and reunites with his friends, and devoted servants, you feel his detachment and see the changes as he grows closer again to them. He is a man bend on revenge, he will ruin the men who sent him away. I adored the friendship between Kit and his friends.
Also against all odds he forms a special deep connection with Suzannah. Their love affair was unique and true, but the people who wanted Kit dead still do and the threat of retaliation from his accusers is lurking.
This fast-paced, engaging story highlights Smith's remarkable talent for weaving a narrative filled with passion and suspense. I was completely engrossed in Kit’s quest for justice against those who falsely accused him, and I thoroughly enjoyed the tender and passionate relationship he shares with Suzannah. Kit’s loving and protective nature, along with his strong friendships and sense of honor, make him the kind of person we all wish to have in our lives. I eagerly anticipate exploring more about the captivating characters in the Rogues of Devil’s Square series.

I do love a period romance, and I absolutely love this author. So when a new book appears it’s an instant read for me.
It’s the seventh book in this series. It’s also a spinoff for a new series “The Rogues of Devil’s square.” So technically it’s book one 😉 it stands in its own, so no need to read the previous books. And as the other books are by different authors I’m assuming the author tends to take this book and turn it into a new series 😁
Kit was sent to Australia as a convict! Why? Well I’d tell you, but it would spoil the book, so you’ll have to find out for yourself 😉
He plans to hunt and take his revenge on the men that sent him to hell. They never expected him to return. But he did, and Kit is going to make them pay with the help of his friends (which sets up the next couple of books 😉) his first task is to locate the men that betrayed him, and his friends are already on the task. Feeding him information gives Kit the feeling that his friends hadn’t forgotten him, and were going to exact revenge on his behalf. He is upset and angry that his first target has died! But finds out he had a daughter, Kit plans to make the woman give him the money stolen from him, and sets about making plans…..
It does remind me a little of the Count of Monte Cristo books.
Suzannah isn’t your usual young lady, rich parents? (in the past they were rather well off, now? Not so much) She’s use to getting her haves dirty and mucking in to help out. She’s also first to help someone out.
Meeting Suzannah throws Kit into a conundrum! He’s smitten with the young woman, and can’t work out why she’s living a frugal life! She should be living in splendour, but no matter, he wants answers and his money! Suzannah is rather perplexed! This man claims her father stole his life and money!!
The romance is the usual slow burn, but after reading so many instant love/lust books, it’s nice to read a buildup 😉 then we have the betrayal!! 😮 will Kit be able to look past at the turn of events with Suzannah? Or will his past dictate his future, and ruin the best thing that has ever happens to him?
The supporting characters were great, loved how Kit’s friends were still loyal and working in the background to find evidence of his innocence.
Another highly recommended read for anyone who loves a historical story with a little mystery thrown in for good measure.
Lauren Smith is one of my new favorite authors! I am always ready to read something she has written, and I wasn't disappointed with The Scoundrel of Drury Lane. I kept stealing time in my day to read this captivating story.
Christopher, Kit, Hollingsworth is a complex hero with a heart-breaking story that drives the plot of the book. He was a innocent who, through no fault of his own developed into a hardened but compassionate man. His mind filled with thoughts of revenge. In his quest, he meets Susannah, the set painter at Drury Lane Theater and his plan is set into motion.
I adore Susannah's bright personality as well as her determination and compassion. She does her best with what her life has become but doesn't lose her kindness and empathy for those around her. Her resolve to treat Kit with kindness even in the face of his harshness and rage is the heart of the story.
I thought at first that Kit would be too hard of a hero and that I wouldn't feel sympathetic towards him. Boy, was I wrong! Lauren has a way of writing her characters that allows us to see and feel the reasons for their thoughts and resulting actions. Watching humanity crack through Kit's outer shell bit by bit made me tear up. I loved this complex human man after just a few chapters.
Kit's friends, known as the rogues of Devil's Square, played a huge part in the book. They stood by him even while he was away and are standing by him now, helping him rediscover the man he once was. I am delighted to learn that Lauren Smith will soon gift us with their individual stories in her newest series.
I loved reading the Scoundrel of Drury Lane. The chemistry between Kit and Susannah was steamy and the scenes with the bad guys made me cheer! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this story. It is the seventh of a multi author series ‘The Scandals and Scoundrels of Drury Lane’ but it is not essential to read altogether. This works as a stand alone but it does look like it might be part of a new series by Lauren Smith. The premise of the story is that Earl’s son Christopher Hollingsworth is framed for fraud and sent to Australia at the age of nineteen. Seven years later he is back but he is no longer the charming boy he had been. He has spent seven years working and surviving in unimaginable conditions with only the thought of revenge against the men who framed him to sustain him. One of the men has now died but Kit learns his daughter survived him. But when he meets the beautiful and innocent young woman can Kit continue with his plan for revenge against her? I really liked Kit and Susannah. There was a real depth in the development of their relationship. I liked that Kit realised very quickly that Susannah was innocent of any crimes against him and then his thoughts were only of trying to protect her from her circumstances. Their relationship was tender and I loved that Susannah brought him a measure of peace when fighting against his demons. Kit and Susannah were well rounded characters with displaying real strength, resilience but also kindness and compassion. Kit’s band of friends play a big part in the book. They rally around him and I really liked their bond of brotherhood and I’m really looking forward to their books as they come out. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Christopher "Kit" Hollingsworth, the Earl of Kentwell, is not your typical Regency hero. Falsely convicted of a crime at age 19, he spent seven years as a convict laboror in Australia. He returns home uncertain of his place in the old world and bent on revenge. He's not looking for love when he goes to meet Suzannah Townsend, the woman whose father helped seal his fate, but the woman he finds at the Drury Lane theatre could be the one to upend all his plans.
Author Lauren Smith covers all the bases in "The Scoundrel of Drury Lane" - a deep and intense love between hero and heroine, fast and capable friends for them both, and dangerous villains that keep the suspense taut throughout.
I found myself wiping my eyes quite often while reading. Kit went through so much hardship and cruelty as a prisoner, but he finds great compassion in his old family retainers, his good friends, and his new love.
I'll admit, I had a bit of a time keeping Kit's five friends straight. They're introduced right off the bat and they're an integral part of the story. They're all handsome, charming, intelligent - all ready to star in their own novels in this new series, The Rogues of Devil's Square. I should mention, this book also falls in the series "Scandals and Scoundrels of Drury Lane." It's not necessary to read any of the other books to enjoy this one.
I highly recommend "The Scoundrel of Drury Lane" for readers who enjoy historical romance with plenty of mystery and danger in the plot.
I received an advance reader copy at no cost in order to read and review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Christopher "Kit" Hollingsworth, Earl of Kentwell, was once a carefree young lad, but his life took a nosedive when he was betrayed and wrongfully sentenced to seven years of labor in Australia. He returns to London as a towering, hardened man of twenty-six, bearing physical and emotional scars. Fueled by a thirst for vengeance against those who wronged him, Kit struggles to reconcile his need for revenge with the new hope that enters his life.
This new hope comes in the form of Suzannah Townsend, a beautiful and innocent young woman who becomes Kit's unexpected beacon of light. She works at the Drury Lane Theater; painting sets and unknowingly capturing Kit's heart. Suzannah is compassionate and artistic, but her life is complicated by the fact that her father is one of the men responsible for Kit's wrongful conviction. As their relationship deepens, Suzannah's kindness and love challenge Kit's dark desires and push him towards a path of redemption. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Their romance is a delicate balance of passion and tension, as Kit grapples with his haunted past while Suzannah's purity offers him a chance at a brighter future. Their journey together is a powerful testament to the transformative power of love and forgiveness. The author has a fantastic way of telling a story and keeping the reader engaged; it was well-written, and I loved the pace of the couple's story.
Seven years ago, Christopher Hollingsworth was convicted of a crime he did not commit and was transported to Australia. Kit is a changed man, bigger, harder, stronger, and set for revenge. He will see the ruin of the three men who framed him. His best friends from his youth, now known to us as the Rogues of Devil’s Square, have been and remain loyal to him. They have changed as well, although not the way Kit has, but they are ready to help him plan his revenge. Suzannah Townsend is a gifted artist. Since her father died, she has used her skills painting backdrops at the theater for the money to live on. When Kit comes looking for the daughter of the man who falsely testified at his trial, he meets and becomes quite taken with Suzannah. Then he discovers she is the man’s daughter. Now what? Kit is broken when we meet him. He truly wants revenge for the wrong done him, but also shows a caring and compassionate side. Suzannah is sweet, but strong, talented, kind, and caring. The supporting characters are just that, a circle of support for Kit, and Suzannah. What a good story, wow! There is betrayal, danger, lose, friendship, revenge plots (from both sides), and an unexpected romance. A well-written and captivating story with great characters, and a beautiful surprise ending. I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.
It is the year 1810 when Christopher 'Kit' Hollingsworth a new young partner in a shipping company is accused of stealing an entire load of goods from one of their ships. It is a phony charge but he is unable to prove it against the corrupt evidence of his partner, the shipping clerk and the magistrate. He is sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia a commuted policy only on account of his father, the Earl of Kentwell. Many did not even make the ocean journey in the cramped ships but Kit was a hardy fellow and despite the beatings and hardships in Australia he survived and made his way home to England only to find his father had died and he was now the Earl of Kentwell. Determined to exact his revenge he met his loyal friends the so named Rogues of Devil Square where they all lived being wealthy and some titled. His first foray was to investigate a Miss Townsend the daughter of the deceased shipping clerk who was one of his accusers. He finds she is a set designer and talented painter at a theater in Drury Lane and instead of revenge learns of her total innocence while her beauty and innocence charms his angry spirit. A lovely romantic sometimes steamy romance well written and very enjoyable. Can't wait to read about the Duke of Tiverton, Kit's closest friend next. Received this arc and have voluntarily reviewed.

I have been a great fan of Lauren Smith ever since I read my first book by her. She always manages to thrill me anew. And this time too, I was not disappointed.
The fast pacing plot is exciting and touching. I just loved the intriguing characters. And what I particularly like is that in her books you usually encounter characters you already know from other books (League of Rogues). I just can’t wait for the next book of this new series and to read more about Kit and his friends!
Kit has been innocently sent to a penal colony in Australia for seven years for a crime he didn't commit. When he returns to England, his only thought is to take revenge on the men responsible for his arrest and deportation. That is how he meets Suzannah. She is the daughter of one of the men who gave false testimony at his trial and was partly responsible for his conviction. But what he doesn’t expect is to fall in love with her....
A must for Lauren Smith fans!
I highly recommend this book to all who like steamy, fast pacing historical romances with intrigue and suspense!

The author’s skills are exemplary in writing this intriguing romance about a man who’s bent on revenge, who is filled with rage at the injustice perpetrated upon him, who has lost himself, and who will eventually find himself again with the help of 5 close friends and the daughter of the man who sealed his fate. Sent to a penal colony in Australia for theft, Kit Hollingsworth returns home seven years later to make sure he “steals” the lives of the men who stole his. His former business partner, a judge, and a shipping clerk are his targets. His friends focus on the men, but Kit focuses on the daughter of the shipping clerk. Suzannah Townshend works as a set painter for the theater and lives in little more than a hovel.
Readers will be spellbound by the romance that ensues between Kit and Suzannah, and how she will be the light to draw him out of his darkness. This story is filled with comradery, action, danger, and steamy sex scenes. The characters are truly fascinating and I look forward to reading about Kit’s friends: Darius, Lionel, Warren and Vincent. Darius’ story is next and I can’t wait to read it. I have received an ARC from the author and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
I haven't had the pleasure of reading anything by this author before, but I will certainly be looking for more of her work after reading this book! Although part of a series, it doesn't have to be read in order and can easily be read as a standalone. Kit was wrongly accused of a crime and had to serve his time in Australia for seven years. Coming back home, he has only one thing on his mind, and that is revenge. While his past continues to haunt him, he meets Suzanna and falls deeply in love with her. But it turns out Suzanna's father is one of the people responsible for him going to jail and losing seven years of his life. Suzanna's father is gone now, but it was Kit who haunted her father till his last breath and he is the one she should be afraid of. But instead of fear, more pleasant feelings come to the surface as she gets to know him more and she ends up being the light leading him out of the darkness he has been prisoner to for so long.
With complex characters and a well-written storyline, I was completely engrossed in the story from start to finish. I would love to read more of this author's work!

Quite an action packed adventure! A thirst for revenge drives Christopher (Kit), the new Earl of Kentwell. Kit was transported to Australia to serve a 7 year sentence, for a crime he didn't commit. When he returns vengeance is all he craves. He along with five of his boyhood friends make a plan to bring down the culprits. Kit goes to the the Drury Lane to seek out the daughter of a now deceased offender, thinking to take revenge on her. Suzannah Townsend is a set painter at night and sells her paintings in the park during the day. Kit saves her from harm not knowing who she really is. An instant feeling develops between them. When he realizes that she's the one he's been looking for he's torn. Suzannah sees the true man behind the hate filled Kit. From there it's more beauty taming the beast. She gives him peace.
The friendship, loyalty, love and support given to Kit by his boyhood chums made this a story worth reading. I liked this book, it's well-written and I felt like I was part of the story. I've read other books by this author and she never disappoints!

At the age of nineteen, Christopher "Kit" Hollingsworth finds himself deported to Australia as a convict. When Kit returns seven years later, his thirst for vengeance makes him determined to destroy the lives of the man who changed him forever. Yet when he returns to England, he finds himself at a loss when the one woman that brings joy to his life, is the daughter of one of the men who sent him to prison. Despite the hate that flows out of Kit, it was beautiful to see his feelings take over when he meets Suzannah. When they are together, their feelings overcome the hate and revenge that threatens to overwhelm Kit. I found this story to be action packed and filled with some dark, complex characters. As always, Lauren Smith can turn such wonderful characters who come from quite fascinating backgrounds and make them believable. The secondary characters in this story, add to this captivating romance. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from BookSirens. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Scoundrel of Drury Lane by Lauren Smith is the seventh book in The Scandals and Scoundrels series written by various authors. It can be read as a standalone book.
The main character of the story is Kit, his heart is full of vengeance after being wrongly accused and sentenced for a crime he didn't commit. One of the people he wants vengeance on has passed away but Kit has no qualms about taking revenge on the man's daughter, Suzanna, if he deems it necessary. I won't say anything more about the plot because I don't want to give spoilers.
What I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the romance between Kit and Suzanna. I couldn't see how they could have a happy ever after for a while, not when so much was against them.
This book had drama, comedy, and a wonderful romance, and at times it was quite sad too. I love a book that can make me run the gamut of emotions. This book ticked all the boxes and I am more than happy to recommend it.

However far from profiting from his conviction she lives in a small rented room, painting theatre scenery and selling paintings in Hyde Park. Soon due to unforeseen circumstances and a carriage accident on the way to paint Kit's portrait and a night due Kit's roof gossip starts. Plans are in motion to convict the true culprits until they kidnap Suzannah. Can Kit save her from those who would destory him.
Lord Christopher Hollingsworth, Kit returned to England seven years after being transported to Australia for crimes he didn't commit. Upon his arrival he finds that while his best friends were still there his beloved father was now deceased, brokenhearted after hoping he would return home. Full of a desire for revenge for what was done to him, Kit soon learns that Love is greater than hate. He meets Susannah Townsend, the daughter of one of the men he thought had a hand in his being falsely convicted of crimes and he has plans to find out if she is living off of any money her father received for testifying against him. Against his wishes, Kit is drawn to Susannah in a way that forces him to recall the person he was before his transportation to Australia. This story is a well written one of second chances and proves that love always wins despite the odds against it. I am looking for to reading additional stories about Kit's friends as they meet their heroines and embark on their relationship journeys.

Kit lost seven years of his life because he was convicted of a crime he didn't commit. He spent those years dreaming of getting revenge on the three men responsible. When he finally returns to England, he learns that one of the men has died leaving behind a daughter named Suzannah. Kit is curious to find out if the daughter has gained any benefit at his expense. He quickly learns that she is barely scraping by and innocent of any wrongdoing. Suzannah, along with his many friends, help Kit repair his broken spirit. He ultimately does get his revenge, but it nearly costs him everything he holds dear.
This story was very exciting and I couldn't stop reading. The romance was quite steamy. The only thing that drove me a bit crazy is the concept that regency England was full of handsome dukes. It's certainly a stretch of the imagination but it's fun to contemplate!
I received a free ARC from BookSIrens and this is my honest review.
Within these pages, we are introduced to a group of six men who are all members of a secret society called “The Rogues of Devil’s Square.” Rogue Kit Hollingsworth is the main character in this story along with his love interest Suzannah Townsend. The plot is a classic conflict between good and evil with lots of action and a few sub plots thrown in to keep things interesting.
I enjoyed this fast paced, quick read. I definitely wanted Kit to exact justice against the men who wronged him and find happiness with Suzannah. It was easy to feel empathy for both of these main characters.
The brief introduction to each roque in the secret society left me wanting to know more about them. The author, Lauren Smith, adds a great hook at the end to entice her readers to look for the next book in “The Rogues of Devil’s Square” series.

Tumultuous, heartbreaking, frustrating and so full of love! This story is one that will stay with me a very long time. This is a “sit on the edge of your seat” kind of book. I adored Kit, with all his conflicting emotions and how he came to care for Suzanna , the daughter of one of his enemies. It is so heartbreaking to see how Kit was used, abused and finally healed through this tale. The friends he has are strong, loyal to the bone men and I loved how the author flushed out his feelings when he first returned. The plans made for revenge were perfection, the climax , exciting and the punishment fitting the crime to the villains. A very well paced, developed story that I did not want to see end. I will miss Kit and Suzanna, Jude, Henry and the Rogue’s of Drury Lane!
