Forgot to add this to my read shelf. I found this story really cute, about a porn star and his new love. "You're how I stay alive". So cute!

A great story and I love the artwork. Screw the Great Yaoi Swap. I think I'll keep it. :P

***

My Tasting:

Why I bought it: Erm, I was on a yaoi buying spree?? That sounds quite possible.

Dislike/like (ending on a high note):

Dislike~ More of a warning~ As you can probably tell from the cover of this yaoi, it is not in the 'usual' manga drawing style. This may be off putting to some, but I've been reading manga and watching anime for so long now that I really enjoy it when I come across a different style. It's refreshing. :)

Like~ The artwork. LOL. What can I say, it really appealed. It had a funkiness and an edge to it sometimes missing from the characteristic manga style. I liked it a lot and it suited the story and characters.

Dislike~ Another warning~ This is GFY which I know is not everyone's cuppa, especially when it comes to yaoi. The approach to the seme/uke tropes in Calling is quite different however, with no forced seduction but the gradual development of the relationship over time. This is assisted by the storyline and artwork giving insight into both characters' POVs - another change from the usual - as well as it utilising the entire length of the novel to tell the tale. This is not a oneshot deal.

Like~ The exploration of Kazuaki's and Kira's burgeoning romance provided the opportunity for the mangaka to deal with issues associated with Kira's job as a pron star. Yeah, this type of storyline can be romantic, blah, blah. Let's face it, though, it's friggin' annoying when an author doesn't do this subject justice because you know that, sooner or later, the shit is going to hit the fan. Thankfully this wasn't an issue with Calling and, more importantly, Kira's work was handled in a meaningful way.

So, what I think: At the time I completed this my comment at goodreads was "Screw the Great Yaoi Swap. I think I'll keep it." That still applies. :P

I would also recommend this to readers who, whilst not being completely sold on the idea of this genre, wish to give yaoi a try so as to allay their curiousity. It is one of the better ones out there.

‘Tasting’ is my version of a mini-review where I talk a (very) little about what I liked and disliked about a book as well as who I think the story will appeal to.Oh, and I’ve added a bit about why I picked up the book in the first place – sometimes this can be interesting to know.

A lot of people don't know thar I'm a fangirl. Huge fangirl. You know the chick with that creepy smile and the maniac glint in her eye. That's pretty much me. And as a fangirl I love the whole yaoi thing. Even though I'm not big on the romance genre for some reason I'm a huge fan of boys love. The soppier dramatic n romantic the better. I don't know why. I don't question it. Needless to say I loved this yaoi. It was different and very refreshing, and the whole love thing just worked. I really liked how the characters love story unfolded throughout the book. It was cute and sweet and I found myself smiling at the soppy love at times. This will definitely be a future reread.

Quite different than most yaoi manga I've read in both the style of art and the storyline. More of a slow-burn love story that did have plenty of on-page sex once it got to that point. More of a variety in the type of sex they shared/enjoyed. The seme was much more sensitive to the uke, none of the usual where the first time is frequently close to non-con. Actually the seme/uke roles were looser as well in some ways. Storyline also touches on deeper issues of a relationship and its foundation. The art was, well, different in proportion, eye and body structure, etc. but still quite nice.

This is probably my favorite Miu Ootsuki work. I'm not usually a huge fan of love at first sight but she really tells this story well and I like the sex work positivity and the fact that she had a chance to pull the "fuck him into liking him back" trope and didn't (her porn actor has more respect for the object of his affections than most seme in yaoi and he's a drastic sight better than the last porn actor seme I read about).

In all, this story was just a really positive, fun experience and a treat to read.

I really loved this, because it was different from a lot of other yaoi/BL stories. The author kept surprising me - she never went the typical way with the characters, and despite what you might thing when you read that the pairing is a porn star and a salary man, it's actually a very sweet story. Definitely worth reading and rereading.

There's something about all Ootsuki's stories that heats up the cozy h/c cockles of my heart. Her stories are never deep enough or developed enough, but I love them nevertheless. Maybe it's her wobbly wet-eyed ukes. God, they make me wanna squish and comfort the everlovin' sugar-snaps outta them. And then do mean things to them, hurt them hard, make them cry some more. Repeat.

This is my first yaoi book so I didn't really know what to expect. The story was really sweet--porn star falls in love--yea sweet! The art was interesting, but the faces didn't always appear the way I expected them. I will try some more.

Wow! I was very impressed with this entire book. I expected the characters to be fraught with jealousy. However that was only one scene, and it was quickly dealt with. The story was just sweet, but in a way that wouldn't induce cavities.
