Why I chose to read this book: 1. I love this "Memoirs" series by Devin Scillian and Tim Bowers; and, 2. although I have read and rated this book a few years ago, I wanted to get young children's opinions about this story, specifically at this time of year.
Praises: Back to my favorite reviewers in the Grade 3 class that I've been frequently subbing in recently! Here are their thoughts: - "It's super-funny and cute!"; - "I like when Spark the Elf says "Elfie" instead of "Selfie"; - "The disguises were funny"; and, - "I liked the happy ending!"
Overall Thoughts: Three words: It's a winner!
Recommendation? These students think it's a fun book to read at Christmastime and would love a copy in their classroom!
This is a super cute story told by Spark Elf, who rides along in Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. He gives us frequent updates and lots of Little-known facts like When Santa is serious about something, he bets you a candy cane. or Reindeer LOVE tinsel but it makes them hyper. It's like 50 cups of coffee. Spark portrays Santa as a smart guy who is easily distracted by puppies, tamales, and train sets. The elves keep him on schedule. When they get back to the North Pole there is a surprise in the bag and the elves help make it right before the whole gang goes to sleep for the day.
This book is Christmas from an Elf's perspective. He gives you the rundown of Christmas Eve and what it takes to get the presents delivered including pulling Santa away from the oh so fun little train he just set up for a child, and taking the time to eat all of the goodies left out for Santa. The story is spiced with little known facts about Santa: He doesn't like gingersnaps, and plenty of "Elfies" taken by the narrating Elf. The sleigh arrives at the North Pole after a job well done. But the crew finds a stow away dog. They must figure out how to get the dog back home because without him Christmas for that family will not happen.
This book is written with plenty of cute quips that keeps the story moving along quickly. I love the "Elfies" and the well-known facts about Santa. I also love how Santa stops every chance he gets to have a little bit of fun.
This is an adorable Christmas story with a new perspective that children of all ages would love. The illustrations are colorful and adorable. I highly recommend it.
A cute Christmas story about the elves and Santa getting ready for the big day, and going about their rounds only to discover they might have accidentally ruined someone's Christmas. Now they need to find a way to make things right.
Cute, and silly enough that younger readers will love it.
A super cute memoir of one of the elves who accompanies Santa in his sleigh to deliver presents on Christmas Eve. There is only one problem. When the sleigh returns to the North Pole, they find a dog in the sleigh that has been taken from a family's home.
Such a cute story! The book follows Spark Elf and how he has a job of making sure Santa stayed on time during his Christmas Eve toy delivery. Santa likes to stop to pet puppies and eat the cookies. A wonderful holiday story that I highly recommend to kids of all ages.
Memoirs of an Elf is a good read for a beginner reader who still likes picture books, but can read on their own well. Written in diary form, the book follows Spark Elf and his journey with Santa on Christmas Eve. The story is cute, creating a kind of countdown till Santa gets all the gifts delivered and a little of what happens when he returns home. The illustrations are adorable and colorful.
Cute holiday story with a twist. Told from Spark the Elf's point of view, the first half of the story is about Santa running late, will he be able to deliver all the presents in one night? But that's only half the story, read this book to find out what happens in the second half or click on this spoiler for a sneak peek. If you're looking for a new holiday read aloud or like stories with unexpected twists, give this one a try.
An absolutely adorable book that I had to read for myself! This is a modern tale of a Christmas delivery as told by one of Santa's elves. The book, to me, feels quite natural as a modern story, "elfies" and all. I really adored the story as well- something of a Christmas delivery mishap! Overall a great story for Christmastime.
This memoir deals with the night Santa and three elves deliver Christmas presents. What happened when Santa returns to the North Pole and his sack isn't empty? The best line in the book, "I snap an elfie." I do love a pun! Read by Sutton Foster on Storyline Online. Bonus - Sutton's reaction to reading this book.
Clever look at life on Christmas Eve told from an elf's perspective. Part of the Memoirs of... series. Readers see the strict timeline Santa has to follow and the difficult job this elf has to keep everything on schedule. Vividly colored illustrations and plenty of humor.
My fifth grader and I listened to this on Storyline. I loved that it’s told from the perspective of an elf. The timeline of the day, the commentary of Santa’s thoughts, and the predicament the elf’s got themselves into made for a very fun story. I really liked this book.
A cute story about Santa's yearly trip around the world, told from an elf's perspective. Elfies and GPS give this story a modern touch. The story has a sweet ending that kids will love.
Great book about a stowaway on santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. And they have to hurry back to his house because his family will miss him. They get there just in time and everyone is happy.
Um, let's see. Let's just go with this: I am not the target audience. Too simple, too saccharine, too cliched for me. The Goldfish book was pretty darn cute, but don't milk a one-off idea.
Santa is a smart man because he has such tech savvy elfs. The story is in touch with reality, with today's lingo and mindset. It reminds the reader about the real gifts in our life, our family.
