About the author

Humayun Ahmed (Bengali: হুমায়ূন আহমেদ; 13 November 1948 – 19 July 2012) was a Bangladeshi author, dramatist, screenwriter, playwright and filmmaker. He was the most famous and popular author, dramatist and filmmaker ever to grace the cultural world of Bangladesh since its independence in 1971. Dawn referred to him as the cultural legend of Bangladesh. Humayun started his journey to reach fame with the publication of his novel Nondito Noroke (In Blissful Hell) in 1972, which remains one of his most famous works. He wrote over 250 fiction and non-fiction books, all of which were bestsellers in Bangladesh, most of them were number one bestsellers of their respective years by a wide margin. In recognition to the works of Humayun, Times of India wrote, "Humayun was a custodian of the Bangladeshi literary culture whose contribution single-handedly shifted the capital of Bengali literature from Kolkata to Dhaka without any war or revolution." Ahmed's writing style was characterized as "Magic Realism." Sunil Gangopadhyay described him as the most popular writer in the Bengali language for a century and according to him, Ahmed was even more popular than Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Ahmed's books have been the top sellers at the Ekushey Book Fair during every years of the 1990s and 2000s.

Early life:
Humayun Ahmed was born in Mohongonj, Netrokona, but his village home is Kutubpur, Mymensingh, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). His father, Faizur Rahman Ahmed, a police officer and writer, was killed by Pakistani military during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971, and his mother is Ayesha Foyez. Humayun's younger brother, Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, a university professor, is also a very popular author of mostly science fiction genre and Children's Literature. Another brother, Ahsan Habib, the editor of Unmad, a cartoon magazine, and one of the most famous Cartoonist in the country.

Education and Early Career:
Ahmed went to schools in Sylhet, Comilla, Chittagong, Dinajpur and Bogra as his father lived in different places upon official assignment. Ahmed passed SSC exam from Bogra Zilla School in 1965. He stood second in the merit list in Rajshahi Education Board. He passed HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1967. He studied Chemistry in Dhaka University and earned BSc (Honors) and MSc with First Class distinction.

Upon graduation Ahmed joined Bangladesh Agricultural University as a lecturer. After six months he joined Dhaka University as a faculty of the Department of Chemistry. Later he attended North Dakota State University for his PhD studies. He grew his interest in Polymer Chemistry and earned his PhD in that subject. He returned to Bangladesh and resumed his teaching career in Dhaka University. In mid 1990s he left the faculty job to devote all his time to writing, playwright and film production.

Marriages and Personal Life:
In 1973, Humayun Ahmed married Gultekin. They had three daughters — Nova, Sheela, Bipasha and one son — Nuhash. In 2003 Humayun divorced Gultekin and married Meher Afroj Shaon in 2005. From the second marriage he had two sons — Nishad and Ninit.

Death:
In 2011 Ahmed had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He died on 19 July 2012 at 11.20 PM BST at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He was buried in Nuhash Palli, his farm house.

ছোট পরিসরের মধ্য মোটামোটি ছিল বইটি। লেখকের মতেই বইটা বানিজ্যিক উদ্দ্যেশ্য ছাড়া কিছু না কেননা উপদেশ বা কথাগুলো বিভিন্ন বইয়ের হিমুকে দেয়া তার বাবার উপদেশ। তবে নতুনত্ব লেখক ঠিকই একটু হলেও অানার চেষ্টা করেছেন। পোষাক নিয়ে কিছুটা রম্য কাহিনী, অার মহাপুরুষ বিষয়ক থিউরি দিয়ে। হিমুর বাবা তথা হুমায়ূন স্যারের নানা সময়ের বিশেষ কিছু উক্তি এক মলাটে হাতের কাছে পাওয়ার জন্য হলেও বইটা পড়া উচিত।

উপদেশগুলোর মধ্যে দু'একটা লাইন প্রিয় বটে, ১. ঘুমাইয়া রাত নষ্ট করিও না। ২. ভয় পাশ কাটাইবার বিষয় নহে। ভয় অনুসন্ধানের বিষয়। ঠিকমতো এই অনুসন্ধান করিতে পারিলে জগতের অনেক অজানা রহস্য সম্পর্কে অবগত হইবে। ৩. কদাচ বিরক্ত মানুষের কাছে থাকিও না। বিরক্ত মানুষ ভয়ংকর। ৪. মানুষের মনে পরম করুনাময় কিছু কাঁটা বিঁধাইয়া দেন। এ কাঁটার নাম মন্দ কাঁটা। তুমি যখনই কোনো মন্দ কাজ করিবে তখনই এই কাঁটা তোমাকে স্মরন করাইয়া দিবে। তুমি অস্বস্তি বোধ করিতে থাকিবে। ব্যথা বোধ না-- অস্বস্তিবোধ।

প্রথম খন্ডে লেখক প্রশ্নোত্তরের মধ্যে দিয়ে হিমুর বাবার চরিত্রস্থাপন করতে চেয়েছেন, আর দ্বিতীয় খন্ডে, হিমুর আগের বই থেকে তার বাবার উপদেশ একত্রিত করা হয়েছে|

হিমুকে নিয়ে অসংখ্য বই পড়া হয়েছে পাঠকদের।
কিন্তু কখনো কি মনে হয়েছে হিমুর বাবা কে?
কেমন দেখতে?
উনি কি হিমুর মতো ই ভবঘুরে! নাকি জীবনের জটিল হিসাব নিকাশে হিমুকে তৈরি করে নিতে চেয়েছেন মহাপুরুষ হিসেবে।

"হিমু" হুমায়ূন আহমেদ এর এক কালজয়ী চরিত্র, যা একই সাথে পাঠককে জীবনের এক উদাসীন দিক সম্পর্কে খোঁচা মারে।
দুপুরের তপ্ত রোদে খালি পায়ে হলুদ পাঞ্জাবি পরে হাটতে শেখায়।
কিংবা মধ্যরাতের জ্যোৎস্নায় ভেসে গিয়ে জীবনকে উপভোগ করতে শেখায়।

সে যাইহোক, এখানে আলোচ্য বিষয় হিমু নয়, হিমুর বাবা।
বইটিতে হিমুর বাবাকে নিয়েই সংক্ষিপ্ত বিবরণ দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করেছেন লেখক।
সে সাথে হিমু চরিত্রে রচিত এ যাবতকালের প্রায় সবগুলো বই থেকেই হিমুকে দেওয়া হিমুর বাবার উপদেশ গুলো তুলে ধরা হয়েছে।

ভালো লাগার উক্তিঃ মানুষের মনে পরম করুণাময় কিছু কাঁটা বিঁধাইয়া দেন। এ কাঁটার নাম মন্দ কাঁটা।
তুমি যখনই কোনো মন্দ কাজ করিবে তখনই এই কাঁটা তোমাকে স্মরণ করাইয়া দিবে। তুমি অস্বস্তি বোধ করিতে থাকিবে।
ব্যথা বোধ না-- অস্বস্তি বোধ।

পুনশ্চঃ যারা হিমু সিরিজের বাকি বইগুলো পড়েননি, তাদের জন্য এই বইটা নিষিদ্ধ।

This was certainly not my cup of tea. I have found I like Himu's father's advice easy to read a line at a time. Altogether, it sounds even more bizarre. Honestly I would rather read Himu's dialogues. It makes more sense at times then his father's advice to him. Plus there was nothing new in it. It was just a compilation of his advice through the books and was bland to read. Highly not recommended, unless you love to read anything that spells HIMU like I do.

যারা সবগুলো হিমু পড়ে ফেলেছে তাদের এই বই না পড়লেও চলবে। মহাপুরুষ নিয়ে হুমায়ূন আহমেদ চার পাঁচ ফর্মার একটা বই লিখলে হয়ত সেটাকে চার-পাঁচ তাঁরা দেওয়া যেত। এইবইটা যে পুরোপুরি ব্যবসার জন্য তা হুমায়ূন আহমেদ স্বীকারও করেছেন। তাই দুই তারার বেশি দেওয়া গেলো না। তাও কথামালা অংশের জন্য নয়। তার আগের অংশের জন্য।

হিমু চরিত্রের আসল নাম হিমালয়। এ নামটি রেখেছিলেন তার বাবা। লেখক হিমুর বাবাকে বর্ণনা করেছেন একজন বিকারগ্রস্ত মানুষ হিসেবে; যার বিশ্বাস ছিল ডাক্তার, ইঞ্জিনিয়ার যদি প্রশিক্ষণ দিয়ে তৈরি করা যায় তবে একইভাবে মহাপুরুষও তৈরি করা সম্ভব। তিনি মহাপুরুষ তৈরির জন্য একটি বিদ্যালয় তৈরি করেছিলেন যার একমাত্র ছাত্র ছিল তার সন্তান হিমু।
হিমুর পোশাক হল পকেটবিহীন হলুদ পাঞ্জাবী। হলুদ বৈরাগের রঙ বলেই পোশাকের রং হলুদ নির্বাচিত করা হয়েছিল। ঢাকা শহরের পথে-পথে উদ্দেশ্যহীনভাবে ঘুরে বেড়ানো তার কর্মকাণ্ডের মধ্যে অন্যতম। উপন্যাসে প্রায়ই তার মধ্যে আধ্যাত্মিক ক্ষমতার প্রকাশ দেখা যায়। যদিও হিমু নিজে তার কোন আধ্যাত্মিক ক্ষমতার কথা স্বীকার করে না।
হিমুর আচার-আচরণ বিভ্রান্তিকর। বিভিন্ন পরিস্থিতিতে তার প্রতিক্রিয়া অন্যদেরকে বিভ্রান্ত করে, এবং এই বিভ্রান্ত সৃষ্টি করা হিমুর অত্যন্ত প্রিয় একটি কাজ। প্রেম ভালবাসা উপেক্ষা করা হিমুর ধর্মের মধ্যে পড়ে। কোন উপন্যাসেই কোন মায়া তাকে কাবু করতে পারে নি। মায়াজালে আটকা পড়তে গেলেই সে উধাও হয়ে যায়। হিমু উপন্যাসে সাধারণত হিমুর কিছু ভক্তশ্রেণীর মানুষ থাকে যারা হিমুকে মহাপুরুষ মনে করে। এদের মধ্যে হিমুর ফুপাতো ভাই বাদল অন্যতম। মেস ম্যানেজার বা হোটেল মালিক- এরকম আরও কিছু ভক্ত চরিত্র প্রায় সব উপন্যাসেই দেখা যায়।
এছাড়াও কিছু বইয়ে বিভিন্ন সন্ত্রাস সৃষ্টিকারী ও খুনি ব্যক্তিদের সাথেও তার সু-সম্পর্ক ঘটতে দেখা যায়। হিমুর একজন বান্ধবী রয়েছে, যার নাম রূপা; যাকে ঘিরে হিমুর প্রায় উপন্যাসে রহস্য আবর্তিত হয়। নিরপরাধী হওয়া সত্ত্বেও সন্দেহভাজন হওয়ায় হিমু অনেকবার হাজতবাস করেছে এবং ��িভিন্ন থানার ওসি ও সেকেন্ড অফিসারের সাথে তার বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ সম্পর্ক গড়ে উঠে।

হিমু বাংলাদেশের কথাসাহিত্যিক হুমায়ুন আহমেদ সৃষ্ট একটি জনপ্রিয় ও কাল্পনিক। নব্বই দশকে হিমুর প্রথম উপন্যাস ময়ূরাক্ষী প্রকাশিত হয়। প্রাথমিক সাফল্যের পর হিমু চরিত্র বিচ্ছিন্নভাবে হুমায়ুন আহমেদের বিভিন্ন উপন্যাসে প্রকাশিত হতে থাকে। হিমু ও মিসির আলি হুমায়ুন আহমেদ সৃষ্ট সর্বাধিক জনপ্রিয় দু’টি কাল্পনিক চরিত্র। উদাসীন হিমু একবিংশ শতাব্দীর প্রথম দশকের বাঙালি তরুণদের ব্যাপকভাবে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছিল।

2. Fear is not a matter of passing. Fear is a matter of inquiry. If you can do this research properly, you will become aware of many unknown mysteries of the world.
3. Do not stay with annoyed people because they are terrible.
4. Almighty pierce some thorns in people's minds. This thorn is called an evil thorn. This thorn will remind you whenever you do something unethical. You will continue to feel uncomfortable. It's not feeling pain, maybe discomfort.

অনেক বিষয়ে আমার চিন্তাধারা তার বাবার কথামালার সাথে মিল নেই।অনেক বিষয়ে তার বাবার সাথে সম্পর্ন্ন দ্বিমত। তার মতে প্রেমের মূল যৌনতা।কিন্তু আমি তাতে একমত নয়।অনেক কারন আছে।তাছাড়া উনি মায়াকে অনেক ছোট করে দেখেন। যা আমার কাছে মোটেও ভালো লাগে নি।হা মায়ার বৈজ্ঞানিক ব্যাখা আছে।সবই মস্তিষ্কের নিউরনের বৈদ্যুতিক সিগন্যাল এর প্রতিক্রিয়া। মায়াকেও সেভাবে ব্যাখা করা যায়। তবে তবে...এই না যে বিষয়টা অনেক তুচ্ছ।বিষয় টা অনেক বিশাল ব্যাপার রয়েছে।এই মায়ার জন্য এই পৃথিবী টিকে রয়েছে।এই মায়া জাল পৃথিবীতে যত ছড়াবে তত পৃথিবী সন্দুর দেখাবে।🙄🙄

হুমায়ুন আহমেদের একটা অল্প মানের বই পড়ার অভিজ্ঞতা হল। মনে হচ্ছিল বই মেলার প্রকাশকরা এক ধরনের জোর করেই বইটা লিখিয়েছেন। যাইহোক, বইয়ের মধ্যে কিছু বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তিদের কথার reference দিয়ে সমৃদ্ধ করার চেষ্টা যদিও করেছেন হুমায়ুন আহমেদ। তাদের মধ্যে শেখ সাদীর বিখ্যাত সেই কবিতা,
"রাজসভাতে এসেছিলেম
বসতে দিলে পিছে
সাগর জলে সুক্তো ভাসে
মুক্তো থাকে নিচে।"
এমন আরও reference আছে, যেগুলো পড়লে ভাল লাগবে বই পড়ুয়াদের।

বইটি আমার ভালোই লেগেছে। হিমুর বাবার কথামালা একেবারে ফেলে দেওয়ার মতো ও না। এখানে এর চাইতে বেশি কিছু বলবো না। তবে এটা সত্য হিমুর বাবার কথামালা পড়ে ভদ্রলোককে পুরোপুরি খারাপ ও বলা যায় না। খারাপ মনোভাব এসেছিলো তার স্ত্রীকে খুন করার বিষয়টি পড়ে। নতুবা খারাপ বলা অবাঞ্ছনীয়।

আমরা সবাই মহাপুরুষ হতে চাই। অনন্ত আমাদের চারপাশে দেখতে চাই।

ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর নাকি কখনোই তার মায়ের জন্যে দামোদর নদী সাঁতরে পার হননি! অন্তত তার ছোট ভাই শম্ভূচন্দ্র বিদ্যারত্ন এমন কোন ঘটনা ঘটেছে বলে স্বীকার করেননি।

"সবার সাথে থাকিও,
কদাচ বিরক্ত মানুষের সাথে থাকিও না!
বিরক্ত মানুষ ভয়ংকর!"


এমন সব মহাপুরুষদের বাণী যেগুলো তিনি আগে বইগুলোতে লিখেছেন তারই একটা সংকলন মাত্র। পুরোটাই একটা বই বিক্রির ব্যাবসা মাত্র। অবশ্য হুমায়ূন আহমেদ সেটি বইটির শুরুতেই স্বীকার করে নিয়েছেন।
