I read this my sophomore year of high school and it was definitely better the second time. Also, I read it while watching the movie and that was a really great experience

Fences By August Wilson
This book was an interesting read, I had a heart for Cory because growing up and having a father like his would've driven me nuts. Troy to me as a reader is living proof that a protagonist does not have to be likable, They need to be interesting and appealing to the audience. As much as I didn't like Troy as a character, He was fun to read and understand his thoughts. The ending is good, It captures the ending of finally finding peace but also uses a great metaphor to close the story

Read it in one sitting. August storytelling is so compelling. I would have loved to see this on Broadway with the icon himself, James Earl Jones as Troy. The movie did very well at capturing August’s genius in storytelling.

Second year I've read this book with 11 grade students. They really enjoy it. This year we were also able to see the play performed at a local theater. Troy and Rose are complex characters who are relatable and whose relationship we talk about a lot in class.

impossible to not hear James Earl Jones when reading Troy Maxon's lines. I cried at the end.

“When the sins of our fathers visit us
We do not have to play host.
We can banish them with forgiveness
As God, in his His Largeness and Laws.”
