Years after fleeing their homeland, Xolani and Raine have finally been able to find peace. However, that peace is shattered when receiving a royal command to return and answer for what they've done for so long age. Do they take their children and flee or do anwser the call and fight?
A good story set in an interesting recovering post-apocalyptic world. The characters are enjoyable and engaging with a dynamic story that keeps you reading and anticipating the next chapter. Can’t wait for more.
Giving this only 3 stars is an incredibly difficult decision. I met Jay at a convention in Knoxville more than a year ago and immediately bought both books in the series off of his great vibes and the description. I then let them sit on a bookshelf for a year while I was deployed, and upon returning, I knew I had to give it a shot. I read all 100 pages in two days and found myself incredibly frustrated. The creativity of the story, unique power system, world described, characters, and mystery are all 5 stars! The issue I have, though, is that this needed to be 300-400 pages and not 100!! Everything in the book felt rushed, from the world building to the character backstories to the mystery that needed to be built throughout pages or chapters, not just a couple of paragraphs. I think Jay really wrote something special, and I'm glad I made the decision to read it after all this time because I did truly enjoy the story. I still plan to read the second book in the series, which I have high hopes for after seeing 256 pages!
This book is short and reads like a movie in your head, with lots of swift action and snappy dialogue. But this does not overshadow the delicate balance of relationships between all of the characters, especially biological and chosen family. The main character's relationship with his wife is healthy and a strong foundation for the plot to extend from. I look forward to reading book 2.
Loved this story! The beginnings of an epic adventure! I love the character banter and the plot was fresh and unique. Really exciting and I'm looking forward to jumping into book 2.
