Along side the dramatic and sad life story of Rahmo ,we are given a setting of Damascus ,Sepharad family life ,interaction with the Muslim community .Rahmo goes blind attacked by the ex husband's family of the Muslim girl he falls in love .He faces the death of his son and father and blames himself .He is depressed ,and is trying to understand the meaning of life and God ,through the help of Sheikh. The book was written in 1929 ,and translated to English in 1968.
Rahmo's story is compared to Job, who rebels against God and the divine order of things .Yet Rahmo triumphs over misfortune and finds new meaning in life .
