Ready Player 3—as a new furry friend joins the fray! “Leveling up” in skills, surprises, and adventures extends to real life, as avid gamer Riko discovers what it’s like living with two cats!
Wataru Nadatani’s hilarious manga series is translated by Zack Davisson (Demon Days, The Supernatural Cats of Japan) and lettered by Susie Lee of Studio Cutie.
I'm plagued with misery. I feel as if I am slumped in everlasting deep dejection. I do not know if I can recover from this disease called "sadness". I long for the translation of the next volume. I have been separated from my kittens and Riko for too long. The day the fifth translated volume of "Cat + Gamer" is released, is the day I shall enter the vast atmosphere of love and happiness once more. Until then, I shall continue to be plagued with sorrow and despair as walk amongst humans and I contemplate the need of human life without "Cat + Gamer".
ok gang emergency meeting: there's a second cat. she's a little calico. there's. a. second. cat. that's all the plot development I needed to want to read the next volume tbh.
When in doubt, add more cats. A conversation with the great sage sends Kozakura on a quest for a companion for herself and Musubi. Providence delivers Soboro, a part munchkin kitten, to the house and if one cat is a handful…
Literally all the pluses and minuses from last volume still pertain to this one. Kozakura legitimately sounds like she’s delusional and, while I appreciate commitment to the bit, it doesn’t actually work in the regular world. It needs the hyper-exaggerated Way of the Househusband stylings.
The cat stuff is still great, now with bonus extra cat. Soboro is adorable and a smart addition since her ridiculous kitten-y nature helps show how individualized feline personalities can be.
Masubi reacts to having a new furry friend pretty much exactly as you’d expect and it drives home how skittish he typically is as well. The variation in their ways of greeting Kozakura are pretty cute.
Lots of well observed behaviour abounds, now with the depth of another cat. Watching them adjust to one another and then become mischief makers of the highest order is certainly enjoyable.
One change that I’m not sure I agree with yet is having the cats “speaking” during regular chapters. Previously this was relegated to the omake as a fun little bonus moment where we got Musubi’s thoughts.
Now the two cats converse back and forth, which is a choice, and definitely gives them some personality beyond strict body language (although that remains a standout aspect; the fighting is bang on). I’d be lying if I said Soboro’s antics when it comes to whatever Musubi is eating weren’t very, very funny.
It’s good enough. Adding Soboro brings a nice little kick to what it was doing, and lets the mangaka explore some new angles. It helps a bunch when it’s otherwise the exact same as the last three volumes.
3.5 stars - this has worn well into its groove and I like, but do not love, it. Antics are still enough to bring me back, but it’s the sort of story I can see myself getting tired of well before the author does.
3.5! I really enjoyed this one because there was more action (obviously with another cat added to the mix) and more chapters from Musubi's perspective. Curious how these two will "get along" in book 5.
August 19, 2024 – page 16 9.52% "So adorable that the store lady encouraged her to get a second cat. Let's see what happens!" August 19, 2024 – page 37 22.02% "Serious cuteness overload!! I'm usually not a cat person but this series may have changed my mind!" August 19, 2024 – page 70 41.67% "I guess it doesn't really matter but not sure why she renamed the cat. Seemed like a good name to me" August 19, 2024 – page 106 63.1% "I love the video game aspect to this book especially. The battles between the cats, their scores on different things (like cuteness), so creative!!" August 19, 2024 – page 143 85.12% "Usually the bonus chapters are from Musubi's perspective but I love that this one has a whole chapter devoted to his perspective on his new situation. Honestly I would read this series from either perspective🙂" August 19, 2024 – page 160 95.24% "I wonder if all cats are like this - getting involved in everything their owner does 😂"
In this volume, a new cat enters the household. This while book is about how Riko winds up with a cat pal for Musubi. She brings home Soboru from the cat adoption fair. Soboru is a munchkin cat and is faster than Musubi in a run. I thoroughly enjoyed this forth volume in the series.
Cat + Gamer by Wataru Nadatani (Vol 3-5) Writing: A Art: A Story: A- Characters: A Setting: A- Best Aspect: All 3 are a lot of fun. This is fun series. Worst Aspect: The sections where the cats ‘talk’ could be a little longer. Recommend: Yes.
This is another cute installment of the Cat + Gamer manga, only this time there are two cats! I loved seeing the introduction of the second cat, and also getting to see a few more human side characters.
