Cassie and her mother were both murdered, not knowing who their killer was. Cassie, a fifteen-year-old rage fueled girl who loves to bake now works in the corporate afterlife, exacting revenges for clients to work up the ranks and finally be given the name of her killer and deliver her own vengeance.
Working alongside her PA Eli and Doorkeeper Divya, an ex-love interest in Elodie and a surprise arrival from a very hot, but very much alive psychic Perrie, Cassie continues trying to find out who took her life. At the same time, making sure to not get in her boss Nem’s bad books, keeping the Miseria and the Board happy, Cassie remains cold, hard, and focused.
Perrie offers Cassie an un-bucket list of things Cassie wished she could do before she died, in exchange for helping her find information. Along the way, struggling with her feelings for Perrie and re-connecting with her old, happier self, Cassie learns about who she truly is and if revenge is truly what she seeks after all.
Oh, I loved this book. It has such a great plotline, it was engaging, cute, and had me surprised at the end of it. I loved it.
Cassie is dead, and to find out who killed her, she has to humiliate people who have done her clients dirty basically. She is super focused and wants to get through her 99 cases to get her revenge on the person who murdered her. She comes off as haughty, not friendly, and willing to do anything to get to the top by all but her PA (an amazing non-binary human named Eli, who is super in love with Max) and Doorkeeper (an amazing straight ally friend, Divya) and sometimes fling, Elodie, who know the real Cassie, who might seem that way but is really a cinnamon roll who loves baking in her free time.
It isn't until Cassie meets Perrie on one of her stakeout mission on her 95th case that her ice starts fading. Perrie is a very much alive, psychic woman who is the total opposite of Cassie. She is bright and bubbly. Basically think Wednesday and Enid and you'll get the picture. Perrie brings the human side of Cassie back and helps her with her cases. They fall in love and it's the cutest.
The plot had me intrigued from page one, right to the end, where I am still like WTF. I didn't see that coming to be honest.
Such a great book, recommend it to all that like the afterlife/in-between/seven deadly sins type stuff. Or if you just want a great sapphic book to read.

DNF at 52 pages. I don't know, this book just wasn't able to grab me. Quite a bit of complex world building going on (which I love), which doesn't get properly explained, you just get thrown into the deep in the hopes you'll figure it out for yourself. I love picking up the puzzle pieces and piecing together the mechanics, but this was too much in too little time which left me frustrated rather than curious.
The main character is just angry. All the time. Very few other emotions, which falls kinda flat after a while. I understand that this book is about revenge, but people are more complex than "hate everyone and eyes on the prize" usually. I would have loved to see more internal conflict in Cassie.
Lastly, I had trouble following the main character's/writer's reasoning sometimes. They would describe something that happened, and tack a judgement or conclusion at the end, but it would be too vague to follow, leaving you wondering how you should feel about the thing that just happened. If I can't actually follow the main character's train of thought and emotions, then I can't properly emphasise with them.
I guess this book just wasn't written for me. But I can see how, if this is your flavour, you could really enjoy this book!
Such an amazing book. The first few chapters are confusing as you learn about the in-between and how their world works, but after that, it has you absolutely hooked with the relationships, mystery and the need for answers. The FMC is so relatable, and i really enjoyed how her character emotionally developed through the book. And a big thank you to the author for writing about an LGBTQ+ team so naturally. It was such a fun read and definitely one I’ll be re-reading in the future
I enjoyed this exploration of coming to terms with grief and hate and finding ways of moving forward with the people that matter to you. I thought the writing was a bit clunky at times, but improved as the book went on, and I’ve read worse. The queer elements were done very well, as well as the disability representation.
This was a fantastic read! It had such a unique storyline and was unlike anything else I've ever read before. I was pulled into this after death world and really enjoyed each character, especially the love interest Perrie. I flew through this book and couldn't wait to see what happened next. Really looking forward to the author's next book!
