Emma Scott has worked in the music industry since the late eighties, and has been involved in radio and TV presenting, gig promotions, A & R and, most recently, radio plugging.
Over the last 25 years, Emma has frustratingly seen many a talented musician fall by the wayside, as a result of them being relatively clueless on how to navigate themselves through the music industry.
'If It Was My Band...' is a simple, fun guide filled with information on all aspects of the music business. It is the compass and map that every aspiring successful musician, of any genre, should have to help them reach their destination: making music their full time job.
From starting out, to getting gigs, achieving airplay and building a buzz, Emma reveals trade secrets and insider information on all aspects of the industry to help you break your band.

This is a very useful book. I read it to help me promote my own fiction books, which are about music. As I expected there was some overlap between advice for musicians and advice for writers about music. While I was reading I could think of lots of examples of people I knew who’d done the dos and the don’ts. Some of the information is basic but well worth repeating, for instance manners cost nothing and you must proof read emails before sending. I also learnt a meaning of VPL that I wasn’t familiar with. This book is comprehensive without being too long. I wonder if the author will write a follow up called “If It was My Book…” about her experiences producing and promoting this book. I’d read it if she did.
