Constituindu-se intr-unul dintre cele mai pretuite texte ale "Filocaliei", "Cuvintele ascetice" sau "despre nevointa" ale Sfantului Isaac Sirul au fost foarte mult folosite in viata monahismului rasaritean.

"Sfantul Isaac se ocupa in mod deosebit de intens cu patru teme capitale, legate insa de o multime de altele, subordinate acestora: (a) importanta nevointelor si a greutatilor pentru desavarsirea omului, tema in care se manifesta o inrudire cu Marcu Ascetul; (b) importanta smereniei, in a carei descriere e, poate, cel mai mare maestru; (c) rolul cunoscator al "simtirii", in care este un predecesor al Sfantului Simeon Noul Teolog; (d) descrierea insistenta a starii de liniste, strans legata cu cea a rugaciunii neincetate si a dragostei. (…)

Nu cred ca a spus cineva cuvinte mai adanci si mai frumoase despre liniste si dragoste ca Sfantul Isaac Sirul. (…)

Aproape toata opera sa este un poem spiritual de negraita frumusete. Sfantul Isaac ne convinge ca spiritualitatea nu se poate exprima decat in poezie. Poezia e singurul mijloc de a exprima adevarul planului spiritual al existentei. Poezia si adevarul merg impreuna in acest plan." (Pr. Prof. Dr. Dumitru Staniloae)

Dumitru Stăniloae (Romanian pronunciation: [duˈmitru stəniˈlo̯aje] was a Romanian Eastern Orthodox priest, theologian, academic, and professor. Father Stăniloae worked for over 45 years on a comprehensive Romanian translation of the Philokalia, a collection of writings by the Church Fathers, together with the hieromonk, Arsenie Boca, who brought manuscripts from Mount Athos. His masterpiece, The Dogmatic Orthodox Theology (1978), makes him one of the most reputed Christian Theologians of the second half of the 20th century. He produced valuable comments on the works of the Fathers of the Church, such as Gregory of Nyssa, Maximus the Confessor, or Athanasius the Great.
