I enjoyed reading this short biography of Tolstoy while preparing for a discussion of The Death of Ivan Ilych. The author said that all episodes and events were taken from documented sources and all dialogues and quotations came "from Tolstoy's diaries, reminiscences, correspondence, and autobiographical works, or from the diaries, correspondence, and memoirs of his family, friends, and contemporaries".
