My Dearest Patcy is the story of Martha Washington before her marriage to George. It is a love story of two people whose perseverence and devotion overcame all barriers but death. And it's the story of a remarkable woman who went on to be remembered as Martha Washington, First Lady of the United States.
Mom gave me this book and at first I thought eh... do I really want to read some more history... but this was a nice surprise! Well written and shed some light on someone that I knew nothing about. Martha Washington was a force to be reckoned with in her own right. She lived through some very hard times and appeared to make the best of it. Well written and insightful!
Not well written, but extremely interesting. The author hops from one character to the next without any warning or break in the writing. However, it portrayed Martha and George Washington as human beings rather than historic heroes, which is rare to find and very refreshing. Martha, to me, was always just a side note to George, but this books places her smack in the middle of it all, a very real and integral character in the founding of our country. The book does a very good job of highlighting the social situation of the time.
This book covers Martha Washingtons life as a young girl up until she meets George Washington. It would be a good book to read before Mount Vernon Love Story. It was interesting to learn about her first husband and the life they shared together until he passed away.
I agree with an earlier comment. A lot of flipping between people and stories. However, a nice book to learn about life in VA pre-revolution. This is a good beach read.
