Arceneaux provides us a 1970s perspective on “Art and Design of the Fifties.”

He notes the lines of future interest and the Fifties enjoyment of Hula Hoops, 3-D movies, phone booth stuffing, “and the ultimate Atomic Age relic, the backyard bomb shelter.”

He draws some interesting comparisons between objects like Alexander Calder’s mobiles and Fender electric guitars.

He sees the Fifties as conservative but freer from the previous deprivations of The Depression and the subsequent period of World War. In some manner he relates this to the emergence of the use of the colors pink and turquoise blue.

I would have liked this book to be longer, deeper and in color (like the cover). It may retain some historical interest but there are much more recent examinations of home design and fashions of this period. They might better serve any interest you have in this period.

I wish this book was longer, and I wish it was in color. I also wish I owned a copy, but alas, I must return this copy to the library.
