A young girl is sent into exile along with her family and their small group of dissenters when the Earth is unified under a sinister government that harnesses the imaginations of the citizens through scarlet disks implanted in their foreheads. The protagonist's family and their like-minded friends refuse to get the disks and have their imagination harvested (and their minds controlled) and so are sent into space to find a potential colony world. The girl and her mother are clairvoyant (which is why her mother will not accept the disk), and she has a vision during cryosleep of a wonderful new planet. Crashing on the planet is not so wonderful, however, and the girl has to find a way to survive on what turns out to be a more hostile planet than her vision showed.
