Trace Plinter is a player. He doesn’t deny it. When his current lover decides to move on, he has no problem giving Patrick his blessing. After all, he’d been ready to do the same for over a month. When Trace rescues a cute farmer from a barn fire, he recognizes attraction in the man’s sweet green eyes, but he doesn’t have time to talk to Laramie and thinks he’s missed his chance to explore a new lover—until Trace sees Laramie again at a diner and makes his move.
Laramie Goshen is just coming to terms with his uncle’s death when the father who beat him and disowned him for being gay reenters his life—proclaiming that he owns half the pig farm his uncle left Laramie free and clear. When Laramie refuses to give in to his father’s demands, problems start happening at the farm. Laramie finds his fantasies filled with the sexy firefighter who rescues him from the fire that burned his barn to the ground. But when that same firefighter makes his interest known, Laramie is at odds. The complication of a boyfriend is the last thing he needs.
They strike a bargain—sex with no strings attached. Trace loves the arrangement, but is unprepared for the protective feelings that surface when he learns that Laramie’s father convinced the construction company to refuse Laramie’s business, making it nearly impossible for him to rebuild his barn. If Trace decides to try to make their situation more permanent, will Laramie even be receptive?
A cowboy and a firefighter. What could be better? I really liked this book. No angst and no whining. The guys went from friends with benefits to falling in love. It was a sexy book and still had a plot. I totally enjoyed it.
3.5* This is a sequel to Fireman's Carry and it can be read alone, but I think it's better to read them in order. Vincent and Carl from that book are also in this book, which was nice. Laramie is a pig farmer, although he is hoping to expand into horse breeding and other things when the time is right, but at the moment he is dealing with his grief over losing his uncle and with his parents and brother trying to make a claim on his farm. Trace is one of the firefighters on the scene when Laramie's barn is torched and burns down. That's there first meeting, but nothing comes of it, until a few weeks later when they run into each other at a diner. Trace is an unrepentant player and makes no bones about it. He doesn't want anything serious and love isn't in his future. That's actually exactly what Laramie needs, with all his responsibilities on his farm and stress with his greedy homophobic family he doesn't want the added stress of a boyfriend who needs his consideration. They strike a sex-only deal that works really well for them and they get to have a lot of sex! While the suspicious incidents on Laramie's farm increase so do the feelings that Trace has for the man. I am a fan of players and guys who are above those 'lowly feelings' of love and affection actually falling hard when they least expect it. But to his credit, Trace doesn't fight his feelings he is open and honest about them. It's nice to watch Trace realize he doesn't mind having a 'boyfriend' and that he might even love him. The two men have a lot in common, they were both rejected and thrown out by their family, but then taken in by another family member who became the most important person in their world, and they have both lost that person. There is some tension and danger that escalates but really it's more about them falling in love when they had absolutely no intention of doing so. It's a very sweet story with a lot of hot sex, some wayward pigs, a burning barn, good friends, a close call, and a very happy ending.
I was really looking forward to continuing this series after reading the first book Fireman's Carry and what a disappointment the second book turned out to be. I didn't like that the sex was the main focus of the story and the thin plot secondary.
There were a lot of things that gave me pause in this story. I was surprised how quickly the firemen came once Laramie's barn was on fire. I read the first sentence where he made the phone call and the next sentence the firefighters were on the scene. Same thing happened in the end when the cops showed up that quickly to apprehend Lane.
Carl's partner in the first book was named Ryan but here his name is Greg. Lorna was ten in previous book and here she's twelve. These books were published six months apart. What gives? How can an author not remember her characters names?
I thought the setting of the book was early fall because of all the barbecues the guys were having. When it comes around to them mentioning buying Christmas trees, I'm like "huh?" Whatever.
Then we have pretty much the same ending with a crazed character pulling a gun on someone. How original! This book was so not engaging. It's fairly short but I skimmed a lot. Never felt like we got to know Laramie or Trace. Too much telling and not enough showing. I'll read the next once since I heard it's the best in the series.
***** Big, flirty Trace is a Firefighter, who is still having short term hook-ups, and doing okay.
***** Attractive, smaller but fit, Laramie, is a hard working farmer whose barn fire was arson.
This is a story in a series, but can stand alone. After the fire, where Trace rescues Laramie, they see each other at a café. Trace immediately asks Laramie out. The guys begin with a friends with benefits arrangement, and slowly it turns into more. Laramie's gay-hating family is causing trouble, and Trace, his Cop buddy, Carl, and other friends help out. The characters are deeply thought-filled, kind, caring and loving. We have a fast paced tale of mean family, wonderful friends, acceptance, and finding your "one", the person you are meant to be with. I like these "Carry Me" tales in this series. They are funny, serious, heartwarming and easy reading. Low angst. Highly recommend. ENJOY !!!
Name changes. Ryan is now apparently called Greg. And Carl’s daughter speed-grew two years while his son remains the same age. Carl also now affects a really unexpected country accent. Also, nearly everyone’s gay now. … Oh well.
Honestly? These are things I can roll my eyes at and ignore in a book like that.
Fact is, I liked both protagonists. Trace took a bit longer to warm up to, but that coincided with Laramie beginning to show hints of personality. XD While I’m not much into sex-based romances, I do appreciate it when that’s the actual basis of the plot and it develops from there.
Sure, the plot may have had some rather thin elements and the writing wasn’t stellar with its repetitive phrases. No use in dissecting that; I just can’t take this book that seriously. I was in it for the romance, heh.
Which brings me to a quotation I snagged because it made me unusually happy. XD
This is part of what I liked so much. That straightforwardness and unapologetic pursuit of each guy’s wants and needs, even when things turned into more vulnerable areas.
But then? I’m sorry. I actually toyed with the idea of giving this a four star rating because I enjoyed the relationship between those two guys so much, but towards the end their interactions weakened somewhat and that finale? No, sorry. That’s just over-the-top clichéd. The story did not need that.
I haven't read a lot of M/M books, but I've found that the ones I have read I have liked and so is the case with Piggyback. It seems like most of the characters in this genre (that I've read anyway) are so caring, loving, and nurturing.
Let me start by saying that I really liked both MC's a lot. Both Trace and Laramie have endearing qualities about them. Laramie's barn is on fire and Trace is the firefighter who rescues him. When they later bump into each other, they begin a friendship that becomes more than just friends. They have to face some homophobic people, especially one of their families. On the other hand there are some really good, caring friends who simply want the guys' happiness they've found in each other.
I liked the book better than how well I thought it was actually written. In this particular case, although it had some writing errors, the plot pulled me in and it got a 4-star rating out of me.
This one was not my fancy. I didn't care for neither MC and wasn't Carl's partners name Ryan in the first book !?! Where the hell did Greg come from ?? I must have missed that part.
This story is part of a series I recommend they are read in order. Trace is a player, his longest ever relationship was four months and he has just ended that and plans to play the field again. When he meets Laramie on the job he is attracted to the cute pig farmer but doesn’t get the chance to pick him up till a few weeks later at a diner, and then gets an offer he can’t refuse. Laramie is too busy for a relationship and he has a lot on his plate because of his estrange family, but when he meets Trace they strike up the perfect relationship for them and it isn’t long before both men have to re-evaluate what they want.
This is a great story of finding love when you aren’t even looking for it. Laramie inherited his uncles pig farm when his uncle passed away, his estranged family came crawling out of the woodwork to try and claim half but Laramie is standing fast refusing to give in to their bullying tactics, when his barn catches fire he meets sexy fire-fighter Trace but doesn’t think anything of it till they bump into each other weeks later, and they strike a bargain that pleases both of them. Trace has never settled with any one guy, he enjoys playing the field but when he strikes a deal with Laramie that suits both of them he finds himself in a situation he has never been in before, and helping and supporting Laramie becomes more important to him than anything else.
I loved this story, the characters were great and the storyline was interesting. Neither Laramie or Trace want a relationship but they strike a balance by becoming fuck buddies, and it works out perfectly between the two of them, but as both men get to know each other more they start to discover that they might just want more, which I found to be great because although it started out with sex it became so much more without either of them realising it and it seemed a more genuine storyline than most. Both men have suffered the loss of a close relative who they had turned to when their immediate family dumped them but although it is painful for them they haven’t let it affect them too much.
It isn’t very often that I come across something new but this is definitely the first time I have read about a pig farmer, and I loved it, Laramie is a wonderful character and Trace is just perfect for him, together they are smoking hot! We also get to see quite a bit of Vincent and Carl from Fireman’s Carry which was great and Carl helps Laramie out with the problems he is having on his farm. As I said before the relationship sneaks up on Trace and Laramie but it is great, there are some light-hearted and fun moments and I really liked the background story of Laramie’s family trying to get the farm.
I will recommend this to those who love unexpected love, hot sex, great characters, a great storyline, a touch of danger, some really happy moments and a very happy ending.
The blurb saying that Trace was a player is what made me pause on jumping to read this. Pleasantly surprised! Trace, within moments presented himself as less a player than a man that has trouble staying connected with someone, quickly losing interest but NOT a cheater. Player and cheater is obviously not the same thing but I guess almost on the same level in my head when thinking about this at first.
Anyways, Trace notices and gives current lover blessing to pursue someone else when he notices a spark. Then when on a call, a spark happens between him and Laramie. After running into each other later they hook up and decide to be casual bump buddies but that changes as their feelings get involved. Trace proves to be a nice and stand up guy showing signs of settling down.
Laramie's family trouble and farm incidents provide some conflict to overcome since it's certainly not a mystery who's behind the problems even if unable to prove until someone makes a mistake.
Once again, I am now looking forward to the next cop/firefighter finding their man.
I like this book more than the first one because this book had much more better story and it did not felt like instant love to me. I also loved the dynamic of the relationship. Carl and Vincent story was good but it moved too fast. To me this felt like a perfect pace.
The character name change of Carl's partner on the force was hard to handle. As well as the age change of the daughter by two years. Other than that, I am really satisfied with this book and the way the characters interacted. I just wished this book was longer to really show the change of gears of thinking for Trace; from player to committed loving partner.
This was a warm, fuzzy read with a few christmas scenes. Took a couple stars off because the fireman, Trace, was a bit too cocky and it bugged me. I still like the story. I've reread this a few times!
Piggyback is the second installment in the Carry Me series - and although you don't need to read the first book (Fireman's Carry) to understand this one, I'd still recommend to do it, because the main characters of Fireman's Carry play a not insignificant role in this story. And also, Trace - the protagonist here - is already introduced in the first book and knowing him from there makes reading about his happy end that much better.
This is one of the books that make me really wish I could give semi-stars. I absolutely enjoyed reading it - I liked Trace and I really liked Laramie, the independent farmer who is very much in tune with who he is and what he wants. Their relationship development was angst- and drama-free, evolving neatly from sex without strings to partners who genuinely care for each other. Vince, Carl and Carl's kids from the first book are part of this story too and I loved that! That was awesome!
There is very little I can complain about, because this really was a nice read. The thing is, though, that's all it was. A nice read - halfway between good and great. Entertaining, enjoyable, nice. Nothing spectacular, nothing life-altering, nothing particularly deep, but still a good story.
If you like your firefighters, I definitely recommend this series!
I was so looking forward to Trace's story. I wanted to meet the man who would change his world and make him happy. Laramie was the perfect man for him. He brought out all the protective instincts that Trace kept hidden from others. The fact that they didn't set out to fall in love but did anyway was perfect. This is the second book of the series. In true me fashion I am somehow reading them a bit out of order but it doesn't matter. They are all amazing stories on their own. It helps to read them in order but sometimes you discover a later one before an earlier. I am in love with all the guys and look forward to the next one. Great story, great flow and wonderful emotions throughout. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to read an amazing love story .
this was a good read for me but. not as enjoyable as the first book in the series Fireman's Carry..which I absolutely loved...reading this story the character of Laramie. seemed much older than 28..I just couldn't picture him that young..the rest of the characters were ok, since four of them was from the first book in the series. I enjoyed the main characters from the first book a lot more..that story had great pacing...this story especially the coming together of the main characters seemed extremely rushed...n I don't like when books are written this way...
I love this author so much! I have lived almost all of the books written. And while I did enjoy this story a lot, I wanted to pull my hair out because it felt like the word ‘lover’ was used in every. Freaking. Sentence! I can’t handle it. Please, please for the love of all that’s holy, STOP using this word or at least use it sparingly. In this book alone it was used 179 times. I looked it up. I almost stopped reading because I just couldn’t stand it anymore. 🙄😤
Another quick read here, straightforward story, I think maybe I was a bit biased because I felt like really after Trace being not uncomfortable as a couple with Patrick and also seeing his friend Vincent settling down, he was ready to settle himself and Laramie happened along at the right time in his life. That said I'm still going to read the next installment and I sure hope at some point in the future books Ryan turns gay and we see young Jake grown up too.
A good second book in the Carry Me series. I enjoyed Trace and Laramie's story. It is a good escapism type book with the classic lust at first site, falling in love while dealing with danger and, of course, the HEA. Everyone needs to read these types of story to forget about the stress of everyday life.
Ok I have officially decided I abhor the endearment 'cutie'. I personally don't use this endearment and I have 2 toddlers at home, and if cutie is going to be used, it should be with small children. Yes, this endearment was used and yes this put me off the story however there were other problems. Dialogue was flat and characters were rote.
I liked this book much more than I thought I would
I was surprised how much I liked Trace in his book, because I wasn't too impressed with him in the last book. I liked how both Trace and Laramie thought that they only wanted a semi-permanent hookup situation that very quickly developed into true affection and love.
I really liked this book. It was sweet and light but serious, and I just really enjoyed reading it. I hope there will be more in this series because this one and #1 in the series were an enjoyment to read.
surprisingly sweet story with some really nice characterisation. The drama in the plot with all the attacks on his farm was both obvious and a bit boring to read. The real winners of this book is the smoking hot sex and seeing how the characters interact with each other.
I liked this one OK, didn't stand up to the first book in the series, which I really liked. OK story of friends with benefits to more. I'm not a huge fan of pet names and calling your significant other, FWB or not, "lover," but that's just a personal issue with endearments haha
I enjoyed the book. The only issue I had with it was a character name change. In the first book Fireman's Carry Carl's partner's name was Ryan. In this one it was Greg. That is why I'm not giving it 5 stars.
Laramie was a fire rescue for Trace. They met later and things just clicked. They had similar backgrounds and Trace became a one man man. Great book 2 wish all her books had this kind of story to them.
